Million Dollar Baby (Spoiler Warning!), Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

I will start today with a warning, something that perhaps I should do more often. The subject today is the film "Million Dollar Baby." If you have not seen the film and intend to see it you may want to stop reading now. Reading this will reveal things you don't want to know before you see the film.

On Sport and Society

The death of Max Schmeling on Friday has been much commented upon over the past few days. I take this to be a recognition of the significance of this man and the memories he evokes around the world. For Americans these memories center on his relationship, both personal and athletic, with Joe Louis.

The Ncaa Winter Meetings, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Early January following the conclusion of the money collection phase of college football season comes the time when the NCAA holds its annual meetings. This invariably results in a deluge of unreality from the President of the benighted organization and some futile gestures of reform flowing from the meeting halls. Meanwhile in the corridors and backrooms the real work of protecting and expanding the revenue streams proceeds unimpeded.

New Year's Nonsense, Richard C. Crepeau Jan 2005

New Year's Nonsense, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

As the calendar turns over from 2004 to 2005 we are back where we were a year ago with the BCS. Once again the "C" has been removed. At the end of the regular season there were five undefeated college football teams. In the meticulously constructed world of the BCS only two of those five teams played each other in bowl games negating the claim of a national championship although there certainly is a BCS champion.
