Multicriteria Evaluation For Port Competitiveness Of Eight East Asian Container Ports, Junn-Yuan Teng, Wen-Chih Huang, Miin-Jye Huang Aug 2004

Multicriteria Evaluation For Port Competitiveness Of Eight East Asian Container Ports, Junn-Yuan Teng, Wen-Chih Huang, Miin-Jye Huang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology

A great deal of literature applies efficiency measurement methods to investigate port’s competitive advantages. Nevertheless, the competitive characteristics of a port are deeply influenced by port policies of government, the operating strategies of the port, operating facilities, and the loading and unloading efficiencies, etc. Therefore, the measurement of a port’s overall competitiveness requires considering all internal and external factors. This paper is to clarify the characteristics of a port’s competitiveness using GRA model by taking eight East Asian container ports for identification. The ranking orders evaluated by the GRA are as follows: Singapore, Hong Kong, Kaohsiung, Kobe, Taichung, Keelung, Pusan, …

A Real Options Application To The Fishing Vessel Scrapping Decision Of Vessel Buyback Programs, Yao-Hsien Lee, Tsung-Tai Yang, Ching-Ta Chuang Jun 2004

A Real Options Application To The Fishing Vessel Scrapping Decision Of Vessel Buyback Programs, Yao-Hsien Lee, Tsung-Tai Yang, Ching-Ta Chuang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology

This paper adopts the real options approach to examine vessel owners behavior in deciding whether to participate or not in the vessel buyback programs. The model allows us to investigate profit uncertainty in a decision to retire an aged vessel and the underlying value of waiting for new information about the profitability of such a change, which may affect the willingness of vessel owners to participate in the vessel buyback programs. Our analysis shows that the government needs to pay more attention to profit uncertainty, which may invalidate the vessel buyback program that does not take it into account. This …

The Optimal Step Toll Scheme For Heavily Congested Ports, Chen-Hsiu Laih, Kuang-Che Hung Feb 2004

The Optimal Step Toll Scheme For Heavily Congested Ports, Chen-Hsiu Laih, Kuang-Che Hung

Journal of Marine Science and Technology

This paper considers the time cost incurred when a container ship is queuing to enter a port and when a container ship arrives at the port ahead of or behind the scheduled time. With this regard, we derive a series of the optimal congestion toll scheme, in order to eliminate or decrease the port congestion. By means of collecting congestion tolls, container ships’ departure schedules can be rationally altered, and consequently disperse container ships’ arrival times at the destination port as well as eliminate or decrease container ships’ queuing times for port entry. Next, we use the sense of economic …
