Professor Chris Fawson has been teaching economics at Utah State University for the past 21 years, during which time he has also been named Department Head and Senior Associate Dean, Director of International Programs, Vice Provost for Academic and International Affairs, Executive Director of Partners in Business, and the International Professor of the Year (2012). During the era when the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX) was passed, audit committees were given heightened responsibility and faced more stringent requirements. However, according to new research by Huntsman accounting professor ChadSimon and his co-authors (see cite below), Congress and others may have overlooked one potentially important incentive with these updated requirements. The research team found an association between barely achieving or surpassing an analyst forecast benchmark and the stock options audit committee members hold or their annual stock option receipts.

Data analytics and communications skills. That about sums up the advice given by employers to Huntsman School students on the 6th annual NYC Career Exploration Trip in early May. A group of 16 students, led by finance professors Ryan Whitby and Paul Fjeldsted, visited 10 firms over a span of two and a half days to find out firsthand about careers and life in New York City.

Graduates were challenged to go and change the world at the Huntsman School graduation ceremonies on May 2, 2015. Following the general USU commencement in the morning, the Huntsman School graduated 721 students, including 162 through its China Cooperative Program and a further 207 graduate students. A total of 400 students walked during the ceremony and heard from valedictorian Tanner Boden, commencement speaker Crystal Maggelet, and Dean Douglas Anderson.

Each year Utah State University students get the opportunity to stretch and challenge their business ethics through an event known as the Ethics Bowl. Sponsored by the Society for the Advancement of Ethic Leadership (SAEL), this event is designed to help students understand how ethics are relevant in a variety of situations and encourages them to discuss and explore ethical questions. This year the ethics bowl took the form of a video competition where student teams made original videos on a business ethics topic.

USU’s Delta Omega chapter of Beta Alpha Psi is famous for being the longest concurrent running “Superior” chapter in the entire organization which includes nearly 300 chapters throughout the United States and recently expanded into Asia and Oceania. The chapter has achieved Superior status every year since 1977 which involves meeting a high standard of at least 32 hours of professional and service activities per member, along with a number of other requirements.

This year, the ethics bowl was changed to a new format and was turned into an ethics video competition. The first and second place winners were encouraged to submit their videos to the National Ethics In Action competition, hosted by the Student Center for the Public Trust. From brains to beauty to business, Sharlene Hawkes has just about done it all. After winning the Miss America Pageant in 1985, Hawkes earned her bachelor’s degree in Communications from BYU, and later, a master’s degree from the University of Utah. She began her professional career at ESPN where she worked for 16 years as an award-winning sportscaster until she realized she was tired of living her life from the sidelines. Three Huntsman School of Business student teams have qualified for the 2015 AIS Student Chapter National Competition in Alabama this spring. Competing against students from nearly 30 universities, Huntsman students have a track record of winning having taken home first and second prizes last year. In addition, USU is the only university to send three teams to the finals this year.
