South Asia comprises India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, the Maldives, Bhutan and Afghanistan. With a population of approximately 1.4 billion it encompasses about two-thirds of the world's poor. One of the biggest challenges facing South Asia today is the issue of combating poverty. The purpose of this paper is to review the development record of South Asia and provide recommendations for the reduction of poverty in the future. Australian Online Newspaper: An Exploratory Study On Internet Savvy Users Using Q-Methodology, Nor Hazlina Hashim, J. A. Meloche

This paper reports on the results of a study of online newsreaders. The study used Q-methodology to investigate the perception of online newspaper use with a group of Internet-literate participants in Australia composed of university students and academics. The relatively recent emergence of Internet facilities now enables news to circulate more quickly and more comprehensively online than in any other form. Yet online news has not replaced other forms of news distribution; it has tended to complement them. Thus, this study seeks to gain an understanding of online news from the perspective of active Internet users.

Consumers increasingly expect companies to make a broader contribution to society. The business benefits of doing so, however, are currently not evident. Prior studies conclude that consumers’ purchase decisions are positively influenced by socially responsible initiatives. However, this insight appears to be of little practical relevance if the level of awareness of such initiatives among consumers is very low. McWilliams and Siegel (2001) emphasise that if CSR is to act as a point of differentiation, awareness of a firm’s CSR activities is crucial. We empirically test this awareness level. This paper explores the links between the sharing of tacit knowledge, the explication of tacit knowledge, and creativity, in the Australian Film Industry (AFI). Subject to harsh conditions including staff turnover, tight budgets and schedule constraints, the AFI does not formulate repositories of explicit knowledge. Instead, it relies on the sharing of tacit knowledge for its success. In this setting, the explication of tacit knowledge is studied. Purpose of this paper: This paper seeks to raise for discussion and reflection some of the key dynamics of action research projects-in-practice. It focuses in particular on how action researchers broker academic and client interests, and how this brokering shifts over time. Design/methodology/approach: The paper is based on participant observation, drawing on the reflective and processual accounts of action researchers involved in a collaborative academic-industry-government project. Savings, Investment And Growth In India: An Application Of The Ardl Bounds Testing Approach, R. Verma

This paper considers savings, investment and economic growth for India using annual time series data for the period 1950/51 to 2003/04. The analysis uses Perron’s innovational outlier model to conduct unit root tests which endogenously determines a structural break. The empirical results show that the null hypothesis of unit root cannot be rejected for gross domestic product. Moreover, the results show that the most significant structural breaks over the last five decades correspond to the wars, regime change and the nationalisation of the banks. In this paper we introduce the concept of “social brands” and examine the potential for co-branding between corporate brands and social brands to enhance or damage the value of corporate brands. Co-branding has been theorized in terms of the relationship between the brands of organizations, products and services. However, from a discourse perspective, issues may also be understood to function as what we term “social brands” that may be incorporated in a co-branding strategy. Advertising has to effectively explain new products to consumers. Product comprehension research provides the theoretical insights needed to do so. Yet, results from product comprehension research are limited because the stimuli used were not really new products and the validity of the comprehension measures used is questionable. We contribute by providing a brief literature review supporting the above claims and proposing two improvements for future work: the use of extensive pre-studies to identify stimuli of varying innovativeness levels and the inclusion of services new to consumers, not the market. Empirical illustrations of the value of both propositions are provided.

Initial research findings are presented on the benefits of a guest lecturing program currently being implemented by a School of Marketing at an Australian University. The program entails establishing relationships between the Marketing School and leading marketing corporations. Individual employees from these companies are matched to appropriate marketing subjects and asked to deliver a lecture demonstrating theory in practice. Academics have the opportunity of building research contacts with guest lecturers which may result in linkage grants, thus improving the research-teaching nexus. There is a growing policy focus in Australian higher education on quantitative research performance assessment. However, most of the analysis has addressed aggregate performance at the institutional level, an approach inconsistent with recent policy emphasis on diversity among universities, and one that ignores performance variations across disciplines. We use cluster analysis to classify one of the ten broad fields of education, that is, management and commerce. Using averaged and available data for 2000-2004 on various research measures, partial rankings are provided. This paper derives the Nash-equilibrium degrees of commitment to a partnership where lack of full commitment fuels suspicion and increases potential losses for partners. The Nash-equilibrium commitment of each partner increases with her internal return, quitting cost and costs of being deserted and with her counterpart's external return and intrinsic capacity to detect lack of full commitment, but diminishes with her external return and intrinsic capacity to detect her counterpart's lack of full commitment and with her counterpart's internal return, quitting cost and costs of being deserted.
