The organizational theory literature suggests that organisations should adapt to highly competitive business environments by strategically replacing or transforming the traditional with more innovative forms of organising. These innovative and more flexible forms of organizing are often portrayed as dichotomous and antithetical. Recent research by Pettigrew, Fenton, Palmer, DiMaggio and others discovered that one of the emergent themes in contemporary firms is that they engage in apparently contradictory practice, where the ‘old’ and the ‘new’ changes are practiced simultaneously. The Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), one of the major regional intergovernmental cooperative networks in the Asia Pacific region is investigated …

The changes brought about by electronic commerce have had a profound effect on small to medium enterprises (SMEs). To manage these changes, SMEs have been encouraged to form strategic alliances. Yet despite the proclaimed advantages of such alliances, little research has been carried out to determine whether these structures have any impact on an SME’s decision to adopt e-commerce. There has also been a lack of research into comparing e-commerce adoption in those SMEs that are members of a strategic alliance to those that have opted to remain outside such arrangements. This paper aims to correct the situation by presenting …

A variety of optimization and negotiation technologies hold the promise of delivering value to the logistics processes of businesses both small and large, yet they tend to remain inaccessible to SMEs (largely due to price and complexity concerns). This paper describes the early-phase steps in a project to develop a regional e- logistics portal. The project seeks to make constraint-based optimization and automated negotiation technologies accessible to SMEs within a portal that also serves their information needs. The paper highlights several novel aspects of the design of the portal, as well as a novel requirements gathering process involving community consultation.

The sluggish pace of E-commerce diffusion in the SME sector is well documented. In response to this, one area that has given rise to continued research is the development of criteria (drivers) for Ecommerce adoption in the SME sector. This research has given rise to a 'standard' set of drivers that has become the basis upon which research into E-commerce adoption in SMEs is carried out. While a number of studies have attempted to develop models of E-commerce adoption, little has been done to discover whether, indeed, these criteria are universal to the sector. This paper presents the findings of …
