The Knowledge Enhancement Process Of Knowledge Workers, Carol Mcgowan, Kate L. P Reid, Lee Styger

Using Constructivist Grounded Theory this research sought to explore the nature of knowledge workers and knowledge work itself. The interview findings reveal that knowledge workers have a set of processes they employ to remain connected and informed both personally and professionally in their domain area of expertise. They have learned to collect, curate, work with and share information to their best advantage. We have described this as knowledge workers knowledge enhancement process. A deeper understanding of this process has implications for organisations aiming to optimise the work of knowledge workers and for those teaching new knowledge workers for the future.

Inter-organisational knowledge sharing is affected by many influences, both internal and external to the collaborative group. This is particularly so in government-industry collaborations where there is increased external stakeholder engagement and complex socio-political issues. While there has been research on the individual and organisational influences on knowledge sharing in the inter-organisational domain, there has been little examination of the external influences that are beyond the control of the collaborative group. We demonstrate how boundary spanning and knowledge brokering as a dual approach support the organizational agility of a software development company. We present the case of an organizational unit whose members engage in both activities within as well as between the company and its environment. Stickiness is a metaphor for the difficulties encountered in transferring knowledge. The concept of stickiness is first mentioned by Von Hippel (1994), who used the term to describe the costs in accessing and sharing information for technical innovation due to the fact that knowledge is socially embedded within the organisation and its practice. The way information is encoded is typically different from how it is socially embedded. As Nonaka (1995) argued, some knowledge systems are explicit whereas others are tacit. As the cost of encoding information, which is tacit, or socially embedded, increases, stickiness also increases.

The inspiration for this work comes from a research consultancy project aimed at assessing the use of the web to enhance communication between two groups, namely, teams of clinicians and the families of patients in Intensive Care Units (ICU). As this project unfolded, the challenge of enabling knowledge sharing between these two disparate groups was encountered. Integrating input-output (IO) analysis and econometric model has become increasingly popular for it combines the advantages of both models (Isard & Anselin, 1982; Moghadam & Ballard, 1988; Beaumont, 1990; Coomes et al., 1991; West, 1991; Treyz, 1993; Israilevich et al., 1996; Rey, 1998; Motii, 2005). There are a number of strategies through which an IO analysis is merged with an econometric model. This paper examines two strategies to build an integrated input-output econometric (IO-EC) model, namely coupling and holistic embedding, from both theoretical and practical perspectives. Scientific knowledge in consumer behavior is defined as consisting of consumer behavior structural frameworks or models (microtheories) and well‐supported empirical generalizations in various areas of consumer behavior (microfindings). This re‐inquiry first examines a pioneering attempt to develop a test of scientific knowledge in consumer behavior, the Armstrong Test. The problems with that test are instructive in revealing threats to validity in test construction and analysis. Second, detailed steps are proposed for constructing a comprehensive, valid test of scientific knowledge in consumer behavior.
