A Comparison Of M&T Bank And Citizens Bank Net Income Changes During The Coronavirus Pandemic, Alex R. Glasier Dec 2022

A Comparison Of M&T Bank And Citizens Bank Net Income Changes During The Coronavirus Pandemic, Alex R. Glasier

Applied Economics Theses

The COVID-19 pandemic had a tremendous impact on every aspect of life, particularly within the world of banking & finance. All banks saw sharp drops in their stock prices and net income, but my hypothesis is that larger, more established banks maintained more stability during 2020 than smaller banks. This paper analyzes the income statements and balance sheets of M&T Bank (an older, more well-established bank) and Citizens Bank (a less-established bank) during this difficult time.

The first part of my thesis describes similarities and differences between M&T Bank and Citizens Bank. I explain how these similarities and differences may …

Economic Growth In Haiti, Marc Arthur L. Barthelemy May 2021

In relation to the same, the question that is raised is “can economic growth promotes political stability?” This research is purposely designed to be qualitative to facilitate the investigation of the source of poverty and its relation to political instability. Case studies on South Korea and China have been …

An Analysis Of Chinese Trade And Fta Using Gravity Model, Minyu Liu May 2018

An Analysis Of Chinese Trade And Fta Using Gravity Model, Minyu Liu

Applied Economics Theses

This paper assesses the impacts of the Free Trade Agreement on the volume of both the import and export of China and FTA countries or districts. We used a gravity model with dummy variables for China and each Chinese FTA partner country to account for the specificities of particular trade relations. By using the relevant theories and methods for the trade gravity model, we estimate a pooled cross-section model with data for 33 countries or districts over 15 years. The result indicates that the GDP, per capita GDP, distance, FTA, and language are the main factors that influence the volume …

The Role Of Performance And Gender In Hiring Decisions, Hayley Capshaw Dec 2016

The Role Of Performance And Gender In Hiring Decisions, Hayley Capshaw

Applied Economics Theses

Gender is likely the first trait a person will notice when meeting someone new. Typically, there isn’t much thought behind it when it is observed. There is just a basic understanding that this new individual is either male or female. Every characteristic going forward is built on that building block of gender. What if this first observation has a much deeper effect on the outcomes going forward than just knowing someone is male or female? What if it changes the entire relationship structure going forward? This thesis will discuss findings on a gender, negotiation, and risk preferences. These findings are …

The Static Future Of The International Financial System, Brad M. Agen

The international financial system is all the participating economies of the world acting independently, yet bound together by the need for trade and currency exchange. The international floating exchange rate system has been the international financial system since its inception in 1973. The purpose of this thesis is to critically examine the history of the international financial system and determine what kind of international system best meets the need of …

Impact Of Oil Prices Fluctuations On Economies In The Age Of Globalization, Ancel Raynaud Soh Feussi Dec 2013

Impact Of Oil Prices Fluctuations On Economies In The Age Of Globalization, Ancel Raynaud Soh Feussi

Applied Economics Theses

Early in the past century, oil has powered economic growth in industrialized economies. Towards the end of the 20th century, as emerging and underdeveloped economies relied more on oil powered means for their everyday need, their appetite for oil has considerably increased and this put an upward pressure on the global oil demand. As supply now struggles to match demand, oil prices are more and more driven by macroeconomics fundamentals. The disparity between supply and demand has had different effects on economies depending, if it is a net oil-exporting or net oil-importing one. This paper will attempt to quantify …

Forecasting Foreign Exchange Rates, Timothy M. Znaczko Aug 2013

Forecasting Foreign Exchange Rates, Timothy M. Znaczko

Applied Economics Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to seek answers to different questions regarding the forecasting of foreign exchange rates. Exchange rate movement is regularly monitored by central banks for macroeconomic analysis and market surveillance purposes. Results in the literature show exchange rate models perform poorly in out-of-sample prediction analysis, even though some models have good in-sample analysis. The results were found using methods including moving average, exponential smoothing, random walk, and Box-Jenkins transfer function. The questions that I ask are: how accurate are these models when compared to a random prediction of future exchange rates, and what variables, if any, …
