Edward “Ed” Coffman grew up in the small town of West Point, Virginia. After graduating from high school he worked at the local paper mill with other members of his family, including his father. When Coffman decided to attend college in 1962, he became the first in his family to do so.

The purpose of this paper is to present "oral history" as a means of doing research on accounting history. As a research tool, oral history can be used to supplement and clarify the written record. It has scarcely been used in accounting history despite its great potential for illuminating past events and circumstances. We take the position that interviews of the principal participants in professional accounting standard-setting and practice by academic accountants can serve a valuable objective, for example, in terms of explaining how a particular accounting standard was developed. The previous issue of THE NOTEBOOK included a contest wherein readers were challenged to guess the identity of a well known accountant who was pictured. This was the toughest contest held to date. In fact, only one person was able to identify the handsome young man in the photo as H. Thomas Johnson, the individual who was then president of the Academy of Accounting Historians. In fact, the picture appeared on the page facing the modern-day picture of Johnson in his role as president.
