Factor Market Rivalry, Factor Market Myopia, And Strategic Blind Spots: The Case Of The Truck Driver Labor Market, Stephen A. Lemay, Dave Mcmahon, John Batchelor, Batchelor Keller
Journal of Transportation Management
This article explores the relationships among factor market rivalry, factor market myopia, and strategic blind spots in the context of the labor market for truck drivers. Levitt (1960) developed the concept of market myopia to explain how managers often overlooked key competitors in product markets. Trucking managers might do the same thing in looking at competition for truck drivers. Factor market myopia and strategic blind spots help to explain how this happens, and how it becomes more severe in the context of factor market rivalry. In the trucking industry, factor market myopia and strategic blind spots may mean that managers …

Selected Railroad Contributions To The United States: An Economic And Historical Review, Brian Gurney, Joshua P. Hill
Selected Railroad Contributions To The United States: An Economic And Historical Review, Brian Gurney, Joshua P. Hill
Journal of Transportation Management
Railroads were instrumental in opening the western U.S. in the 19th century. The main incentive provided for the railroads to connect San Francisco, CA and Omaha, NB were land grants out of the public domain. In a period of 21 years (1850-1871), 174 million acres were patented (deeded) primarily to what would become four major railroads. Many acres were returned to the government, some were sold and many others were retained or disposed of through holding companies. This paper emphasizes an oft-overlooked reality: that in many cases the railroads leveraged these land grants in support of the growth and prosperity …

Foreclosure sales permitted investors to purchase large volumes of low-cost residential properties after the last financial crisis, reshaping patterns of property ownership in low-income housing markets across the US. This study links post-foreclosure property acquisitions by investor-landlords to subsequent lead poisoning cases among children under age six living in Detroit, Michigan. We find that the odds of exhibiting elevated blood lead levels (≥ 5 μg/dL) are higher for children living in investor-owned homes purchased through tax foreclosure sale. These findings highlight the potential for property speculation in post-foreclosure housing markets to exacerbate severe and racialized burdens of excess lead toxicity …

An Exploration Of Strategic Alignment In Higher Education, Linda Jimenez
An Exploration Of Strategic Alignment In Higher Education, Linda Jimenez
Wayne State University Dissertations
The aim of this study is to explore the faculty’s experience and perspective of the alignment between their research, teaching, and service to the institutional priorities. Presently, higher education faces institutional issues that are unique with varying contexts and where strategic alignment has a vital influence on organizational performance. Although faculty’s core activities are service, teaching, and research, the enduring and prevailing challenges in higher education require faculty to expand their roles of core activities and engage in broader strategic initiatives of institutions. The need for this study is driven by a shortage of evidence about whether and how faculty …
Customer Choice Modeling For Retail Category Assortment Planning And Product-Line Extension, Elham Nosratmirshekarlou
Customer Choice Modeling For Retail Category Assortment Planning And Product-Line Extension, Elham Nosratmirshekarlou
Wayne State University Dissertations
Growing competitiveness and increasing availability of data is generating great interest in data-driven analytics across industries. One of the areas that has gained a lot of attention is Customer choice modeling, which aims to explain the choices individual customers make in choosing from a set of products based on their preferences. While effective customer choice modeling is essential to a wide variety of application domains, including retail, it is challenging in practice due to limitations around the quality of the data available for modeling and potentially complex choice behaviors. This dissertation presents a hybrid modeling approach that relies on both …

Today’s fast-moving economy, characterized by uncertainty, rapid change and highly competitive landscapes, challenges firms to innovate effectively, which requires them in turn to increasingly innovate openly. The key idea of the notion of open innovation is that “not all the smart people work for you”. Instead, useful ideas and knowledge are spread over firms of all sizes in many parts of the world. …

Journal of Transportation Management
Over the last two years blockchain technology has presented itself as a potential digital transformation that could disrupt and revitalize many business models. However, this digital transformation is still new and many companies grapple with possible applications of its theoretically sound benefits. Academic research is scarce and often limited to high level perspectives on how blockchain can benefit businesses in general. The time is right for exploring specific applications of the technology. This research considers how the digital transformation to blockchain could impact inventory management practices within the retail industry. The research relies on data collected through phenomenological interviews with …
Does Size Matter In The Airline Industry?, D. K. Malhotra, Philip Russel
Does Size Matter In The Airline Industry?, D. K. Malhotra, Philip Russel
Journal of Transportation Management
Over the last decade, the U.S. airline industry has transformed itself through mergers, restructurings, bankruptcies, and dissolutions. Also during this time, the airline industry focused on a business model that was driven by an emphasis on asset utilization. This was driven by increasing the load factor to increase cost efficiencies through economies of scale so that the return on invested capital could be improved by reducing the operating costs. This study evaluates economies of scale and resultant cost efficiencies in the U.S. passenger airline industry for the period 2013 to 2018. The research finds that the airline industry is experiencing …
Relative Trends In Exogenous Factors Influencing Airline Flight Delays, Bruce Bradford, Carl Scheraga
Relative Trends In Exogenous Factors Influencing Airline Flight Delays, Bruce Bradford, Carl Scheraga
Journal of Transportation Management
This study investigates the impact of four subcategories of flight delays on total flight delays over the period from May 2005 through December 2019. Total flight delays are divided into weather, air carrier, security, and non-weather National Aviation System (NAS) delays. Using the flight data provided by the Air Travel Consumer Report of the U.S. Department of Transportation for a consistent set of ten airlines, each time- series is decomposed. Trend and seasonality are determined. Total flight delays, and each of its subcategories, demonstrate strong seasonality and follow a random walk model without drift during the sample period. Total flight …

The Rise, The Fall, And The Resurrection Of The Egrocery Channel: A Transformation In Retail Logistics And U.S. Consumer Behavior, M. Theodore Farris Ii, Janeth Gabaldon
Journal of Transportation Management
Nearly 20 years ago this journal published “Where Have All The On-Line Grocers Gone?” about the growing online grocery market and correctly predicted that the concept would fail until logistics issues were resolved. This article considers the changes that have taken place since then and why there has been a resurrection and exponential growth in the eGrocery channel. It considers how the forced disruption from the COVID-19 virus has served to help further the development and growth of this channel.

Drug Testing In The U.S. Trucking Industry: Hair Vs. Urine Samples And The Implications For Policy And The Industry, M. Douglas Voss, Joe Cangelosi
Journal of Transportation Management
Virtually everything we own was transported by truck at some point. Around 3.5 million truck drivers haul almost 71% of U.S. freight. To ensure the safety of our roadways, the U.S. government requires all drivers to pass urinalysis drug screens. However, urinalysis drug screens are easily thwarted and some trucking companies use hair drug screens, a more stringent test. This research examines trucking industry data and finds about 300,000 truck drivers would be removed from their positions if forced to pass a hair drug test. Hair testing opponents argue that the test is biased against ethnic minority groups. Comparing urine …
