An Examination Of Nba Mvp Voting Behavior: Does Race Matter?, B. Jay Coleman, J Michael Dumond, Allen K. Lynch Dec 2008

An Examination Of Nba Mvp Voting Behavior: Does Race Matter?, B. Jay Coleman, J Michael Dumond, Allen K. Lynch

Management Faculty Publications

The selection process of the most valuable player (MVP) in the National Basketball Association (NBA) was recently questioned as to whether African-American players were treated unfairly based on their race. Using NBA voting data from the 1995-2005 seasons, we develop two empirical models in order to examine the role that a player’s race plays in the determination of this award. Our estimates imply that after controlling for player, team, and market characteristics, there is no statistically significant effect of race on the likelihood that a player will appear on an MVP ballot or on the number of votes he will …

This essay is a multidisciplinary case study of environmental injustice. It demonstrates that misuse of the environment can ultimately impact humans unjustly and further that attempts to remediate injustice in one area merely shifts the burden of injustice to others. After providing the historical, sociological and scientific facts surrounding the 50-acre site, an ethical assessment is presented. It was determined that the actors in this case study were not employing any ethical valuing in their decision making process, but rather relied upon economic values to make their choices. The authors then suggest that judging them from within their own economic …

On Human Migration And The Moral Obligations Of Business, Linda H. Harris Jan 2008

On Human Migration And The Moral Obligations Of Business, Linda H. Harris

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This work addresses to what extent businesses in the United States and the European Union have a moral obligation to participate in social integration processes in areas where they operate with the use of migrant laborers. It begins with the presupposition that a common framework as to what constitutes ethical behavior in business is needed and beneficial. It argues that the very industry that creates a need for migrant labor ought to also be involved in merging this labor successfully into the existing community and specifies that a discourse on business ethics and migration is gravely needed. This must be …

Guatemala: On The Road To Financial Transparency, Carrie N. Griggs Jan 2008

Guatemala: On The Road To Financial Transparency, Carrie N. Griggs

All Volumes (2001-2008)

Corruption and poverty have long been linked with each other, but recent studies, such as the Corruption Perceptions Index and Standard & Poor's Corporate Governance Scores, have since strengthened this correlation. Even though progress has been made in establishing anti-corruption laws and regulations, the results of these studies reveal that much more needs to be accomplished before we see meaningful improvements in the world's poorest countries. In this research, we will focus on one country in particular, Guatemala. By examining the effect that culture, history, and politics have on Guatemala's corporate governance and financial environment, we will see the steps …

Students And Retirement Saving Predictors, Christopher Michael Miller Jan 2008

Students And Retirement Saving Predictors, Christopher Michael Miller

UNF Undergraduate Honors Theses

Over the past century Americans have significantly increased personal income yet decreased personal savings. The researchers in this study examine college students habits and beliefs concerning saving for retirement. To our knowledge there is no published data about retirement savings among Americans in this age group. We try to determine whether a student's retirement savings beliefs and habits can be predicted. We designed a model examining the student's risk-aversion level, financial background, general savings habits, financial literacy and attitudes toward saving. We found that our overall model is predictive of a student's beliefs and habits in regards to saving for …
