Two perspectives stand out in examining international variations in innovative new venture creation: institutions and national culture. However, systematic insights into the interconnections between institutional and cultural perspectives and their effects on entrepreneurship are severely lacking. In order to fill this gap, the current research integrates two prominent yet under-explored institutional and cultural factors: linguistic future-time reference (FTR) as an institutional factor and long-term orientation as a cultural factor, and considers how they are linked through the time perspective reflected in risk and uncertainty perception. Although some have proposed eliminating the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) to reduce government expenditures, other alternatives exist that could reduce the cost of the program and increase its viability, such as increasing deductibles, which may increase participation and revenue. The recently released FIMA NFIP Redacted Policies Data Set provides unprecedented opportunities to examine homeowner deductible choices for flood insurance policies using policy-level data. The menu of deductibles currently ranges from $1,000 to $10,000 in Special Flood Hazard Areas (SFHAs), but until April 1, 2015, the maximum deductible was $5,000. Engagement is a critical phenomenon of interest in a variety of disciplines and application domains and has been shown to lead to positive outcomes, such as enhanced learning, task performance, or job satisfaction. However, existing measures of engagement are typically specific to the domain in which the research is conducted. Every two years groups worldwide participate in the Critical Assessment of Protein Structure Prediction (CASP) experiment to blindly test the strengths and weaknesses of their computational methods. CASP has signifcantly advanced the feld but many hurdles still remain, which may require new ideas and collaborations. In 2012 a web-based efort called WeFold, was initiated to promote collaboration within the CASP community and attract researchers from other felds to contribute new ideas to CASP. Slandering of a firm’s products by competing firms poses significant threats to the victim firm. The resulting damage can be as large as the one from a product-harm crisis. Unlike a true product-harm crisis, the disparagement is based on a false claim, thus we call it a pseudo-product-harm crisis. Using a pseudo-product-harm crisis event that involves two competing firms, this research examines how consumer sentiments evolve surrounding the crisis. Our analyses show that while both firms suffer, the damage is severer to the offending firm (which causes the crisis) than to the victim firm (which suffers from the false claim) …

Trust and liking are attitudes with important implications for automation reliance in single-advisor settings; however, the extent to which their relationships with reliance generalise to settings in which the user receives conflicting advice from a human and automation is unknown. Participants completed an X-ray screening task and received simultaneous advice from what they believed was another human and an automated aid. High disuse was found for both advisors. Among participants who relied on advice, those with greater relative liking for the automation than for the human significantly increased their reliance on the automation relative to the human during the first …

This paper presents a robust longitudinal comparison of student learning in face-to-face (F2F), online, and hybrid delivery methods of a two-course sequence in information systems, required of all business majors, at a Midwestern land grant university. Student learning was evaluated by delivery method in the introductory first class of the sequence, using an ordered probit regression model of letter grade earned controlling for the effects of other possible explanatory variables. Cumulative grade point average was found to be a consistent determinant in student success, and students were found to have significantly better learning outcomes, as expressed through course grades, in …

Data suggest that colorectal cancer could be cut by approximately 60% if all people aged 50 years or older received regular screening. Studies have identified socio-cultural attitudes that might inform cancer education and screening promotion campaigns. This article applies item response theory (IRT) to a set of survey items selected to assess sociocultural attitudes in order to determine how current measures may affect what we know about how these attitudes affect colorectal cancer screening (CRCS). This paper investigates how leader-member exchange (LMX) and emotional intelligence (EI) are associated with employees’ creativity in high-tech firms. We develop a model that considers LMX and EI as predictors of creativity with LMX as a boundary condition for the relationship between EI and creativity. Results reveal that LMX is a strong predictor of creativity. However, EI does not directly affect creativity. More interestingly, the interaction between EI and LMX negatively influences creativity such that EI is detrimental for creativity only when LMX is high. Thus, the role of LMX for employees’ creativity may be paradoxical. Further, the positive role …
