The Effectiveness Of Sell Discipline Strategies In Institutional Portfolios, Ryan Kennedy Dec 2012

The Effectiveness Of Sell Discipline Strategies In Institutional Portfolios, Ryan Kennedy

Business/Business Administration

Prospect theory predicts that individuals will be risk seeking when faced with a potential loss. An implication is that investors may be reluctant to sell losing stocks, leading to potentially greater losses. This study explores whether institutional portfolio performance is significantly related to the manager’s stated sell discipline strategy. Six distinct sell discipline approaches are compared using four performance metrics. As predicted by prospect theory, this study finds sell discipline to be a statistically significant factor in performance for all performance metrics. The results also show that the best sell discipline strategy is dependent on which performance metric is used.

Business/Business Administration

This study estimates the effects of terrorism incidents on a nation’s borrowing costs. An event study approach is used to evaluate changes in sovereign-bond yield spreads after terrorist attacks occur. Prior research is not in consensus on whether the effect of terrorism on bond markets is significant, and no study shows why certain bond indices may rise while others may fall after a terrorist attack. This study does not find statistical significance, which suggests that the effect of an attack may depend on the targeted country. For terrorist researchers, this study is one step toward answering whether terrorists can manipulate …

Stock Returns And The Franchise Value, Sean Landrigan May 2012

Stock Returns And The Franchise Value, Sean Landrigan

Business/Business Administration

An accurate predictive model of a firm’s future performance has been long sought after in the finance field. This study examines the relationship of a firm’s franchise value, using the Franchise Factor, to its Price-to-Earnings ratio as one model of performance. Using the firms in the S&P 1,500 as the data sample, this study also examines the effects of market value along with the franchise value to price-to-earnings ratio. The results show that the franchise value to price-to-earnings ratio, even when controlling for the firm’s market value, was in fact predictive of individual companies’ stock returns between 2000 and 2009.

Auditor Size Vs. Audit Quality: An Analysis Of Auditor Switches, Jackie Weiner May 2012

Auditor Size Vs. Audit Quality: An Analysis Of Auditor Switches, Jackie Weiner

Accounting

In recent years, there has been a debate over whether public companies should be required to have either a mandatory retention period or a mandatory rotation period for their external auditors. With all of the financial scandals that occurred in the late 1990s and early 2000s, the idea of auditor switching has come to the forefront. There are some opponents to auditor switching when companies switch auditors due to opinion shopping. However, research has identified many other reasons for switching auditors, such as business growth or requirements for new audit procedures. When companies require more complex audits, it may become …

The Debate Over The 150 Credit Requirement, Amy Wong May 2012

The Debate Over The 150 Credit Requirement, Amy Wong

Accounting

In 1983, Florida adopted a 150 credit hour rule in order for a CPA candidate to sit for the CPA exam. In 1989, the AICPA voted to recommend that all states follow Florida’s lead to adopt the 150-hour rule (Carpenter and Hock 2009). The events that led to the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 raise the question of just how helpful those extra credits are in improving the knowledge of accounting professionals in their field. A previous study has shown that the 150-hour requirement does not affect pass rates (Allen and Woodland 2006). Another study has shown that when there was …

Maintaining And Regaining Organizational Legitimacy : The U.S. Securities And Exchange Commission, Karen R. Bryce

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Focusing on organizational legitimacy is an essential element to the survival of an organization. Suchman (1995) suggests that "Legitimacy is a generalized perception or assumption that the actions of an entity are desirable, proper, or appropriate within some socially constructed system of norms, values, beliefs, and definitions" (p. 574). Legitimacy must first be gained and then maintained. If lost, legitimacy must be regained or the organization is unlikely to survive. Organizations can use both symbolic and substantive means of gaining, maintaining or regaining legitimacy. This dissertation explores organizational legitimacy by examining the case of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission …

In today's competitive global environment, organizations are continuously seeking out ways to motivate employees to learn new skills and update existing skills. One way that employees are updating their skills are through voluntary self-development activities. The current research focuses on these behaviors, and extends prior research by developing and empirically examining a model of self-development behaviors that integrates two theoretical lenses: social exchange and motivation. The social exchange component of the model included distributive justice, procedural justice, trust, and organizational identity and the motivational component of the model focused on subjective norms, self-efficacy, need for achievement, conscientiousness, resources, and attitudes …

Disappearing Act? : An Analysis Of The Boundaries Between The Nonprofit & For-Profit Sectors, Simone Grant

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This dissertation analyzes the boundaries between the nonprofit and for-profit sectors using network analysis on interlocking directorates. Drawing upon data that contains over 26,000 directors and 1000 organizations, it seeks to identify the nature of the network between the largest organizations in American society and addresses how it might explain recent marketization trends in the nonprofit sector. The “biznification” of the nonprofit sector has caused some alarm amongst nonprofit scholars and this dissertation adds another layer to the discussion by looking at the directors of the nonprofit and for-profit sectors. Seeking to identify any differences in the network brought on …

This dissertation examines various aspects of economic and social consequences associated with the history of coffee production in the rural municipality of Senahú, a province located in the central Guatemalan province of Alta Verapaz that is home to one of the four major Mayan language groups in Guatemala; the Q'eqchi' Maya. In particular, the investigation is concerned with how German and other Anglo-European entrepreneurs initiated large-scale coffee production in the late 19th century and the social and economic disparities that arose with the early successes of large-scale coffee production. This examination also presents how the collective society in Senahú became …

Do It Because I Said So ... Please? : The Connection Between Supervisor Interpersonal Justice, Perceived Power, And Employee Reactions, Ellen Weissblum Jan 2012

Do It Because I Said So ... Please? : The Connection Between Supervisor Interpersonal Justice, Perceived Power, And Employee Reactions, Ellen Weissblum

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The purpose of this set of studies was to investigate the linkage between interpersonally just or unjust behavior on the part of a supervisor and the perception of referent, coercive, and legitimate power as perceived by subordinates. It was proposed that lower levels of interpersonal justice on the part of a supervisor would result in the perception that the supervisor possessed a greater degree of coercive power and a lower degree of referent power. It was furthermore proposed that, consistent with prior research, referent power would be positively related to task commitment; coercive power would be positively related to reactance; …

Knowledge Creation In Distributed Group Collaborative Workplace Writing, Virginia Yonkers Jan 2012

Knowledge Creation In Distributed Group Collaborative Workplace Writing, Virginia Yonkers

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This study looked at the knowledge creation by distributed groups in a knowledge based organization as they engaged in collaborative writing. A traditional model of knowledge creation assumes knowledge is located by the individual in the forms of content, competency, and expertise. A new model of knowledge creation identifies three ways to identify knowledge (tangible representation of knowledge, procedural and tacit knowledge, partaged knowledge) which can be found internally or externally to the individual, group, or organization. Knowledge creation is a complex process situated in the multiple environments within which a distributed group functions. Power structures create knowledge boundaries within …

The Relationship Between Training Design And Trainee Differences On Training Outcomes : An Experimental Investigation Of The Treatment Of Socialization And Training Content In The E-Learning Environment, Regina Elizabeth Yanson

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

For e-learning initiatives to succeed, they must be designed to support a variety of trainees, methods, and content. Two important considerations in the design of any learning environment are the complexity of the tasks being learned and the socialization and connections of the trainees. Therefore, the goal of this research was to investigate how different levels of complexity and trainee socialization affect training outcomes in an e-learning environment. Given the importance of additional trainee and environment factors, a model of e-learning effectiveness was proposed in which the mediating roles of engagement, social presence, and motivation to learn are considered. To …
