Testing Diffusion Processes For Non-Stationarity, Jeff Hamrick, Murad S. Taqqu Sep 2008

Testing Diffusion Processes For Non-Stationarity, Jeff Hamrick, Murad S. Taqqu

Master of Science in Analytics (MSAN) Faculty Research

Financial data are often assumed to be generated by diffusions. Using recent results of Fan et al. (J Am Stat Assoc, 102:618–631, 2007; J Financ Econometer, 5:321–357, 2007) and a multiple comparisons procedure created by Benjamini and Hochberg (J R Stat Soc Ser B, 59:289–300, 1995), we develop a test for non-stationarity of a one-dimensional diffusion based on the time inhomogeneity of the diffusion function. The procedure uses a single sample path of the diffusion and involves two estimators, one temporal and one spatial. We first apply the test to simulated data generated from a variety of one-dimensional diffusions. We …

Beyond “The Total Organization”: A New Adaptation Of A Great Exercise, Kathleen Kane May 2008

Beyond “The Total Organization”: A New Adaptation Of A Great Exercise, Kathleen Kane

Organization, Leadership, and Communication

“The Total Organization”, a Cohen, Fink, Gadon, and Willits’(1992) exercise, has great possibilities for inclusion in a variety of current courses covering a range of topics with a variety of outcomes. We have successfully adapted the exercise for our required MBA Leadership course. The participants must self-organize, choose leadership, determine roles, and develop the structure for an entrepreneurial (and should they choose, high tech) venture. With few instructions, they must struggle with the ambiguity of multiple organizational challenges including: innovation, creativity, team building and organizational design. We will demonstrate the exercise and give participants overheads and exercise instructions on CD …

The Effects Of Roster Turnover On Demand In The National Basketball Association, Alan L. Morse, Stephen L. Shapiro, Chad D. Mcevoy, Daniel A. Rascher Feb 2008

The Effects Of Roster Turnover On Demand In The National Basketball Association, Alan L. Morse, Stephen L. Shapiro, Chad D. Mcevoy, Daniel A. Rascher

Kinesiology (Formerly Exercise and Sport Science)

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of roster turnover on demand in the National Basketball Association (NBA) over a five-year period (2000–2005) and compare these results to previous research on turnover in Major League Baseball (MLB). A censored regression equation was developed to examine the relationship between roster turnover and season attendance, while controlling for other potentially confounding variables in the model. The censored regression model was used to account for the capacity constraints by forecasting the level of demand beyond capacity using information from the uncensored observations. The regression model was found to be significant …

Court Of Public Opinion In And For The State Of Uncertainty, Kevin Farmer, Kathleen Kane, Steven Meisel, Joseph Seltzer Jan 2008

Court Of Public Opinion In And For The State Of Uncertainty, Kevin Farmer, Kathleen Kane, Steven Meisel, Joseph Seltzer

Organization, Leadership, and Communication

Our session has two goals. First, we aim to stimulate debate over a ubiquitous, yet largely unchallenged, instrument that purports to operationalize Jungian personality theory (the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator). Second, we suggest a platform for teaching management theories, the mock-trial, which manifests active learning as well as critical thinking and has been successfully utilized in other disciplines. With contributors playing key roles in the trial and volunteers from the audience serving as potential prosecution and defense witnesses as well as the jury, we hope the discourse on substantive theory and teaching process will provide the jolt OBTC 2008 envisions.

Hospitality Management Educators Vs. The Industry: A Competency Assessment, Michelle Millar, Zhenxing Mao, Patrick Moreo

Hospitality Management

An often-asked question in the hospitality industry is whether graduates of hospitality education programs possess the competencies that the hospitality industry believes students should possess. The purpose of this study is to determine the discrepancies, if any, in the competencies being taught in the classroom for hospitality tourism students versus what lodging and food and beverage professionals believe are the most important competencies to be taught. Semi-structured, personal in-depth interviews were conducted with both educators of, and industry professionals working in, lodging management, and the food and beverage industry. The results of this study, incorporated into a competency domain model, …

The Relationship Of Demographics To Gaming Preferences And Behavior, Michelle Millar, Seyhmus Baloglu

Hospitality Management

The purpose of this exploratory study was to identify any association between the type of game landbased casino visitors played and various demographic and behavior characteristics. Multiple Correspondence Analysis (MCA) was used to identify the association between type of casino game played and respondent characteristics and behaviors. The study revealed that different types of visitors to land-based casinos may be drawn to different types of casino games. Preferences were separated by gender, age, previous visits to gambling destinations, whether the respondents gambled on the Internet, and what type of Internet game they played. The identified associations have the potential to …

Hotel Guests’ Preferences For Green Hotel Attributes, Michelle Millar, Seyhmus Baloglu Jan 2008

Hotel Guests’ Preferences For Green Hotel Attributes, Michelle Millar, Seyhmus Baloglu

Hospitality Management

The primary purpose of this study was to identify a list of green attributes guests would prefer to have in the guest room of a hotel. Using results from a mixture of qualitative and quantitative questions in a survey of attendees of a hotel developer’s conference, a list is presented. The green attributes include such items as recycling bins in the guest room, and energy saving lighting. Some attributes, however, such as refillable soap and shampoo dispensers, were not received favorably. Future environmental challenges the industry will face, along with defining a green hotel, are also presented.

Defining Information Systems As Work Systems: Implications For The Is Field, Steven Alter Jan 2008

Defining Information Systems As Work Systems: Implications For The Is Field, Steven Alter

Business Analytics and Information Systems

The lack of an agreed upon definition of information system is one of many obstacles troubling the academic information systems discipline. After listing a number of definitions of IS, this paper defines information system as a special case of work system as defined in Alter (1999a). This definition has many desirable characteristics: It is easy to understand; differentiates IS from IT; covers totally manual, partially automated, and totally automated information systems; links to a life cycle model that generates many insights about development and implementation problems; provides a simple guideline that helps in interpreting common IS/IT jargon; and has other …

Service System Fundamentals: Work System, Value Chain, And Life Cycle, Steven Alter

Business Analytics and Information Systems

Service systems produce all services of significance and scope, yet the concept of service system is not well articulated in the service literature. This paper presents three interrelated frameworks as a first cut at the fundamentals of service systems. These frameworks identify basic building blocks and organize important attributes and change processes that apply across all service systems. Although relevant regardless of whether a service system uses IT, the frameworks are also potentially useful in visualizing the realities of moving toward automated service architectures. This paper uses two examples, one largely manual and one highly automated, to illustrate the potential …

A Primer On Spreadsheet Analytics, Thomas A. Grossman Jr. Jan 2008

A Primer On Spreadsheet Analytics, Thomas A. Grossman Jr.

Business Analytics and Information Systems

This paper provides guidance to an analyst who wants to extract insight from a spreadsheet model. It discusses the terminology of spreadsheet analytics, how to prepare a spreadsheet model for analysis, and a hierarchy of analytical techniques. These techniques include sensitivity analysis, tornado charts, and backsolving (or goal-seeking). This paper presents native-Excel approaches for automating these techniques, and discusses add-ins that are even more efficient. Spreadsheet optimization and spreadsheet Monte Carlo simulation are briefly discussed. The paper concludes by calling for empirical research, and describing desired features spreadsheet sensitivity analysis and spreadsheet optimization add-ins.
