An Investigation Of The Irish Road Haulage Industry’S External Environment, Eoin Plant, Declan Allen, Edward Sweeney
Conference papers
The movement of goods is of critical importance to an economy, especially one, which is dependent on international trade such as Ireland. Considering Irelands distribution of manufacturing and other organisations throughout the country, many firms are dependent upon road haulage effectiveness and efficiency.
In recent times there has been somewhat of a growing unease in the road haulage industry in relation to increasing cost, squeezing profit margins even tighter. An understanding of the Irish road haulier’s business environment would undoubtedly shed greater light onto their situation. The paper addresses this issue with an analysis of the industry’s competitive environment.

Ict Adoption By Logistics Service Providers: Developing A Learning Agenda, Pietro Evangelista, Edward Sweeney
Ict Adoption By Logistics Service Providers: Developing A Learning Agenda, Pietro Evangelista, Edward Sweeney
Conference papers
Recent years have seen innovations in the logistics and freight transport industry in relation to Information and communication technologies (ICT) diffusion. The implementation of such technologies by third party logistics providers (3PLs) allows the real-time exchange of information between supply chain partners, thereby improving planning capability and customer service. However, the logistics and freight transport industry is lagging somewhat behind other sectors in ICT diffusion.
In relation to the latter point, it is important to note that the dissemination of ICT in logistics and supply chain management (SCM) is shifting the 3PL industry to an increasingly knowledge-intensive approach. In this …

Destination Management Systems – Electronic Distribution Effectiveness Amongst Smes In The Hotel Sector, Patrick Horan, A Frew
Destination Management Systems – Electronic Distribution Effectiveness Amongst Smes In The Hotel Sector, Patrick Horan, A Frew
Conference papers
Tourism is an information intensive activity and the generation, gathering, processing, application and communication of information are vitally important for day-to-day operations (Buhalis, 1994). Tourists rely on a wealth of information before making a decision (Horan and MacDonaill 1996). Hospitality operators, especially SMEs, have little data upon which to base an assessment of electronic distribution channel effectiveness with sparse look-to-book ratios being among the few metrics offered. This presentation attempts to assess effectiveness criteria from both client and server perspectives and will map both qualitative and quantitative data into a modelling process to represent the effectiveness of distribution channels, DMS …

The Pig In Irish Cuisine Past And Present, Mairtin Mac Con Iomaire
Conference papers
The inspiration to research and present this paper came from a folklore tale about how Saint Martin created the pig from a piece of fat. The paper will explore the pig in Irish cuisine and culture from ancient times to the present. The paper will discuss the pig in Irish literature and mythology; outline the role the emergence of the potato had on domestic pig keeping, and trace the rise of commercial processing in the nineteenth century to the present day. It will highlight a number of traditional Irish dishes using pig meat and illustrate how today’s chefs have incorporated …

Searching For Greater Variety In Strategic Thinking, Brendan O'Rourke, Martyn Pitt
Searching For Greater Variety In Strategic Thinking, Brendan O'Rourke, Martyn Pitt
Conference papers
This paper proposes a use of the discursive approach to explicate variety in ways of strategic thinking. Such an explication of variety is both useful managerially in increasing awareness of greater discursive resources and also theoretically in critiquing views of strategic thinking as homogenous and organizationally contained. Ways of strategic thinking have been investigated using a variety of approaches including expertise perspectives (Voss, Greene et al. 1983), cognitive mapping (Eden, Jones et al. (1979); Huff (1990) ) and upper echelon theory (Hambrick 1998). More recently the linguistic turn in organizational sciences (Alvesson and Kärreman 2000), and the study of strategy …

Rationalising The Construction Materials Purchasing Process, Louis Gunnigan, Alan V. Hore, Trevor Orr
Conference papers
This paper is concerned with the process used in locating and removing inefficiency in the construction materials purchasing process. In the first part, a case study is presented showing the build-up of costs involved in purchasing materials. Potential for substantial savings is revealed. The second part of the paper gives a status report on a rationalisation pilot project currently being undertaken by the Construction Information Technology Alliance (CITA). This project aims to show how greater effectiveness and efficiency can be applied to the administration of the construction materials purchasing process by the application of information technology already used widely in …
