The paper is based on the analysis of the responses of a questionnaire survey of logistics managers working in manufacturing firms in Ireland. The objectives of the survey were to establish the educational and training needs of the practicing logistics manager. Supply chain management is one of the most significant strategic challenges currently facing the Irish grocery sector. The UK grocery market with its emphasis on composite deliveries via regional distribution centres is extremely sophisticated; the Irish grocery sector, however, is in the embryonic stage of implementing central distribution. The organisational struggle to maintain and refine, yet also necessarily to renew and replace core capabilities, is a complex, and at times paradoxical, challenge. This paper reflects on this managerial task and on the difficulties and tensions inhering in its possible resolution.
