ABSTRACT

The Republic of Costa Rica is a Central American country with only 0.03% of the world’s landmass, but 5% of the world’s biodiversity, making it a leading ecotourism destination. Ecotourism is one of the main sources of revenue for the country, but the degradation of coastal reefs has resulted in a significant loss of financial income for developing areas. As a result, many of these areas are searching for methods to revert the degradation of coral reefs.

A body of research on instructors’ use of leadership behaviors in higher education teaching, often called instructor-leadership, is gaining momentum. Despite the field’s growth, the practical recommendations emerging from empirical investigations of instructor-leadership remain largely underdeveloped. In particular, the most popular practical implication – training and development of instructor-leadership – is given fleeting attention. Curious about the effects of knowing a second language on income, I used data from the 2017 American Community Survey to analyze the economic advantages associated with bilingualism for adults 18-64 in Texas who reported an income and positive weeks worked in the year prior to the survey. Bilingualism is defined as speaking a language at home other than or in addition to English.
