Arts Participation In Canadian Older Adults During Covid-19, Kate Dupuis, Emma Bender Jan 2022

Arts Participation In Canadian Older Adults During Covid-19, Kate Dupuis, Emma Bender

Arts Participation in Canadian Older Adults

Arts participation can be incredibly beneficial for the health and well-being of older adults. As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, many arts organizations were unable to provide in-person activities, and moved to alternate forms of program delivery. We examined whether and how Canadian older adults continued participating in the arts during the initial wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. A 28-item survey was completed by 141 individuals (M = 70.5 years, range = 55-94, 66% female). Although the majority of respondents (70%) were engaging in the arts during the first wave of the pandemic, their engagement had declined compared to …

Resistance Is Futile: Embracing The Era Of The Augmented Worker, Nathaniel Barr, Kelly Peters Jan 2018

Resistance Is Futile: Embracing The Era Of The Augmented Worker, Nathaniel Barr, Kelly Peters

Publications and Scholarship

The prospect of A.I.-augmented workers is both promising and unsettling: How can employees and firms ensure that they get the benefits of A.I. without erasing uniquely human strengths?

Practice And Refactoring Log: A Reflection Based Learning Strategy To Improve The Fluency Of Computing Students In Writing Computer Programs, Elizabeth Dancy, El Sayed Mahmoud Jul 2016

Practice And Refactoring Log: A Reflection Based Learning Strategy To Improve The Fluency Of Computing Students In Writing Computer Programs, Elizabeth Dancy, El Sayed Mahmoud

Faculty Publications and Scholarship

The relationship between reflection and learning is evident. Reflection plays a significant role in learning by encouraging insight and complex learning. However, most students consider their work experiences at school as isolated and unrelated events. This work aims to investigate how to improve the students’ fluency in writing computer programs through reflection. A new deliverable, the Practice and Refactoring Log (“PAR Log”), is requested for each assignment in order to engage students in the process of making meaning from their experiences when completing their assignments. The PAR Log shows and justifies all changes through the assignment development cycle. Two student …

Sentence Level Fact Based Search Engine: News Fact Finder, Cristina Ribeiro, Ricardo Salmon, Swathi Amarala, Christina Hamada Sep 2010

Sentence Level Fact Based Search Engine: News Fact Finder, Cristina Ribeiro, Ricardo Salmon, Swathi Amarala, Christina Hamada

Publications and Scholarship

Users searching the Internet for news are not able to find relevant fact-based results for certain queries using the major search engines. Queries that require exact substring matching in order to obtain very relevant results are not currently possible. Furthermore, search engines do not discriminate in returning results that are opinions and not quantifiable facts. Our sentence level search engine, News Fact Finder, is designed using suffix arrays, filters out opinions, and produces very relevant results that are attractive to users. The News Fact Finder produces a 73% success rate of providing relevant fact based results.

Computational Public Safety In Emergency Management Communications, Cristina Ribeiro, Alexander Ferworn Jan 2010

Computational Public Safety In Emergency Management Communications, Cristina Ribeiro, Alexander Ferworn

Publications and Scholarship

Communications are very important in any situation but in emergency management it is imperative that the communications be reliable and responsive to the evolving situation. In emergency management there are many different types of networks with different objectives. It is of immense value to have the ability to seamlessly integrate other networks and computing resources into one interconnected heterogeneous network. The entire management team should be able to access any of the individual networks and their resources. In this paper we discuss various wireless network communication options in the context of their viability for use in emergency management. We analyze …

A Continuance Model For A Mobile/Web Based Self-Management System For Adolescent Diabetics: The Role Of Loyalty Incentive, John Laugesen, Khaled Hassanein Jan 2010

A Continuance Model For A Mobile/Web Based Self-Management System For Adolescent Diabetics: The Role Of Loyalty Incentive, John Laugesen, Khaled Hassanein

Publications and Scholarship

It is estimated that 200 children per day worldwide develop Juvenile Diabetes (JD). There is no cure for JD, therefore treatment protocols focus on controlling the disease. Several information systems (IS) have been developed to help patients manage their chronic diseases, but often these systems suffer from reduced use over time or complete abandonment. Limited research has been conducted that examines continued usage in this domain. Through this study, our purpose is to build and evaluate a mobile/web based JD monitoring system combined with a rewards program designed to increase continued system use. We propose a comprehensive continuance intention model …

Wireless Estimation Of Canine Pose For Search And Rescue, Cristina Ribeiro, Alexander Ferworn, Mieso Denko, James Tran, Chris Mawson Jun 2008

Wireless Estimation Of Canine Pose For Search And Rescue, Cristina Ribeiro, Alexander Ferworn, Mieso Denko, James Tran, Chris Mawson

Publications and Scholarship

In this paper we discuss the use of accelerometers and Bluetooth to monitor canine pose in the context of common poses observed in urban search and rescue dogs. We discuss the use of the canine pose system in a disaster environment, and propose techniques for determining canine pose. In addition we discuss the challenges with this approach in such environments. The paper presents the experimental results obtained from the heavy urban search and rescue disaster simulation, where experiments were conducted using multiple canines, which show that angles can be derived from acceleration readings. Our experiments show that similar angles were …
