The new perspective emerging from strategy's value-capture stream is that the effects of competition are two-fold: competition for an agent bounds its performance from below, while that for its transaction partners bounds from above. Thus, assessing the intensity of competition on either side is essential to understanding firm performance. Yet, the literature provides no formal notion of "competitive intensity" with which to make such assessments. Rather, some authors use added value as their central analytic concept, others the core. Added value is simple, but misses the crucial, for-an-agent side of competition. The core is theoretically complete, but difficult to interpret …

We examine the leading pro-competitive justification for RPM, free-riding on dealer services, in today’s context of brick-and-mortar versus online retailing. Market research studies show that many consumers visit a brick-and-mortar store to examine a product and select its features, but then purchase it at a discounted price from an online retailer. An often-voiced concern is that such “showrooming” will discourage traditional retailers from providing demand-enhancing sales services. According to the classic free-riding theory (Telser, 1960), manufacturers can solve this problem by imposing price floors that prevent online retailers from undercutting brick-and-mortar retailers. Timing Is Everything? An Empirical Analysis Of The Determinants Of Service Quality Provision, Olivier Chatain, Alon Eizenberg

We utilize a unique database from a large legal services provider to examine how service quality responds to the firm's available capacity, and to the nature of the firm-client relationship. We develop empirical measures of both the (internal) level of resources available to the firm at different points in time, and of the (external) value creation for customers. Our results indicate that service quality increases in the amount of the firm's available resources, suggesting that quality adjustment can be used as a means of tackling capacity constraints. This paper addresses the problems of aggressive rent-seeking activities by patent assertion entities (PAEs), especially those involving patent thickets. It analyzes the fundamental differences in the strategic interests of practicing entities and PAEs and explains why those differences affect the conduct of PAEs and increase the opportunities for, and economic harm caused by PAEs’ rent-seeking and patent holdup. It also addresses the anticompetitive harms caused when practicing entities transfer patents to PAEs, especially those that incentivize assertion of the transferred patents against their competitors, i.e. “patent privateering.”

Why are most capitalist enterprises of any size organized as authoritarian bureaucracies rather than incorporating genuine employee participation that would give the workers real authority? Even firms with employee participation programs leave virtually all decision-making power in the hands of management. The standard answer is that hierarchy is more economically efficient than any sort of genuine participation, so that participatory firms would be less productive and lose out to more traditional competitors. This answer is indefensible. After surveying the history, legal status, and varieties of employee participation, I examine and reject as question-begging the argument that the rarity of genuine …

An economic perspective on Internet security is useful not only for identifying weak spots, but also for finding solutions to security problems. It focuses on the behaviour and economic incentives of both infrastructure providers and end users. Individual parties may have insufficient incentives to invest in cybersecurity. The free play of markets markets may not deliver a socially optimal level of security on the Internet for at least three reasons: information asymmetry, externalities and market power. De discussie van wat een echte coöperatie is en hoort te zijn, is haast zo oud als de coöperatieve beweging zelf en lijkt soms wel op de zoektocht naar de heilige graal. Toch beschikt de internationale coöperatieve beweging, vertegenwoordigd door de Internationale Coöperatieve Alliantie (ICA), over een referentiekader met een gemeenschappelijke definitie, principes en waarden. Dit referentiekader is zelf het compromis tussen vele verschillende visies en stromingen binnen het coöperatieve denken. In this paper, we describe the development and current status of anti-manipulation rules as they apply to wholesale electricity and natural gas markets in the United States and the European Union, including the institutions that are responsible for overseeing these rules. We then compare and contrast these jurisdictions to discuss similarities, differences, and potential gaps in coverage within and across their internal markets. We note that while the behavior prohibited by the U.S. and EU statutes is remarkably similar, there is in fact no common standard for defining market manipulation. This paper characterizes the aspects of exchangeability in the Shapley value. We show that, in the Shapley value, each player’s prospects of joining a t-player game as the last member of the game is a moment sequence of the uniform distribution. We prove that, with finite exchangeability, the Shapley value is the only value in which the probability assignment is a unique mixture of independent and identically distributed probabilities. We also derive the Shapley value using the de Finetti’s theorem.

In this brief, we identify the most attractive metropolitan areas to locate in to sell in emerging markets. Taipei, Istanbul, Johannesburg, Santiago, Buenos Aires, Sao Paulo, St. Petersburg, Moscow, Shanghai and Beijing comprise our top 10 list. Close runners-up include Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Mumbai, Cairo and others. This short nontechnical article reviews the Arrow Impossibility Theorem and its implications for rational democratic decisionmaking. In the 1950s, economist Kenneth J. Arrow proved that no method for producing a unique social choice involving at least three choices and three actors could satisfy four seemingly obvious constraints that are practically constitutive of democratic decisionmaking. Any such method must violate such a constraint and risks leading to disturbingly irrational results such and Condorcet cycling. I explain the theorem in plain, nonmathematical language, and discuss the history, range, and prospects of avoiding what seems like a fundamental theoretical challenge to the possibility …

Spectrum auctions are used by governments to assign and price licenses for wireless communications. Effective auction design recognizes the importance of competition, not only in the auction, but in the downstream market for wireless communications. This paper examines several instruments regulators can use to enhance competition and thereby improve market outcomes.

The purpose of this report is to provide decision makers in Colombia (and by extension other countries or regions), who are considering the deployment or consolidation of wind power, with a set of options to promote its use. The options presented are the result of an analysis of the Colombian market; this analysis included simulations and modeling of the country’s power sector, and extensive consultations with operators, managers, and agents. More information on the analysis and simulations is presented in the appendixes. Supply chain coordination with contracts has emerged as one of the key strategies to reduce the inefficiencies arising from conflicting objectives of agents in a supply chain. In this paper, we critically analyze the literature on repeated contracts that are designed for mitigating inefficiencies in supply chains. We also provide some directions for future research in repeated contracts for supply chain coordination.

De financieel-economische crisis heeft het debat over de wijze waarop we onze economie moeten organiseren opnieuw aangewakkerd. Brede lagen van de bevolking, het maatschappelijk middenveld en zelfs de politieke klasse gingen op zoek naar alternatieven voor ons economisch bestel. Eén van deze alternatieven is de coöperatie. Het loont daarom eens de moeite om te kijken in welke domeinen men deze organisatievorm (her)ontdekt heeft en of de coöperatie daadwerkelijk een alternatief kan vormen voor bepaalde sociale en economische problemen.

Het ontwerp van deze monitor volgt daarbij de conceptualisering van de sociale economie, zoals eerder uitgewerkt in een technisch voorrapport door Gijselinckx & Van den Broeck (2008).
