Challenges To Audit Education For The 21st Century: A Survey Of Curricula, Course Content, And Delivery Methods, Christine Earley, Eric Johnson, Jane Baird, Paul Caster, William Dilla, Timothy Louwers

Eric N. Johnson

This paper reports the results of a survey of auditing and assurance courses in the US and several other countries conducted during 2000-2001. The survey, commissioned by the Auditing Section of the American Accounting Association, yielded data on a total of 285 auditing and assurance courses taught at 188 colleges and universities in the United States, Canada, and several other countries. The syllabi data were analyzed on a number of dimensions and the results compared to two prior surveys of auditing courses (Frakes, 1987; Groomer and Heintz 1994). Our findings document substantial changes in content (e.g., new or expanded coverage …

Property Market Analysis In The Valuation Process: A Survey Of Australian Practice, Lynne Armitage, Martin Skitmore Nov 2003

Property Market Analysis In The Valuation Process: A Survey Of Australian Practice, Lynne Armitage, Martin Skitmore

Lynne Armitage

The nature of property valuation/analysis is examined in respect of the property market and, in particular, the extent of property market analysis undertaken by practitioners when carrying out property valuations. An empirical survey is described of a sample of 240 valuers throughout Australia and their practices in valuing investment grade property. It is shown that, although the valuers are fully aware of the need for property market analysis, and collect appropriate data to do the analysis, the analysis itself is seldom conducted in other than a cursory manner.

Towards A Theory Of Sustainable Exchange And Trade Or Why We Need To Rethink And Restructure Free Trade, Kenneth A. Dahlberg Nov 2003

Towards A Theory Of Sustainable Exchange And Trade Or Why We Need To Rethink And Restructure Free Trade, Kenneth A. Dahlberg

Kenneth Dahlberg

This essay outlines a positive alternative to today’s unsustainable free trade doctrines and practices. It is firmly based on natural and human biological, ecological and evolutionary experience as well as their various stewardship practices.
It begins with a discussion of an important insight: that biological systems operating at all levels - from the cell to organs, organisms, social insects, and social animals (including humans) - all seek to encourage healthy exchanges as well as to keep harmful agents from crossing their permeable “boundaries.” The implications of such “selecting” boundaries for evolutionary biology are also briefly discussed.
Next, the mutually shaping …

Strategic Human Resource Practices, Top Management Team Social Networks, And Firm Performance: The Role Of Human Resource Practices In Creating Organizational Competitive Advantage, Christopher J. Collins, Kevin D. Clark Nov 2003

Strategic Human Resource Practices, Top Management Team Social Networks, And Firm Performance: The Role Of Human Resource Practices In Creating Organizational Competitive Advantage, Christopher J. Collins, Kevin D. Clark

Christopher J Collins

In this article, we begin to explore the black box between human resources (HR) practices and firm performance. Specifically, we examine the relationships between a set of network-building HR practices, aspects of the external and internal social networks of top management teams, and firm performance. Results from a field study with 73 high-technology firms showed that the relationships between the HR practices and firm performance (sales growth and stock growth) were mediated through their top managers’ social networks.

Emotional Intelligence Skills Training, Jane Murray Nov 2003

Emotional Intelligence Skills Training, Jane Murray

Jane Murray

In recent times a significant amount of research has been undertaken in the area of emotions in organisations (Ashkanasy, Härtel, & Daus, 2002). In particular, the emotional intelligence construct has been widely researched and highlighted as a tool that organisations can harness to improve individual performance of organisational members at all levels (Jordan, Ashkanasy, & Härtel, 2002). This has led to an increased offering of emotional intelligence training interventions, many of which lack empirical support. At present, a debate exists over whether emotional intelligence is an ability, or can be learned (Mayer, Salovey, Caruso, & Sitarenios, 2001). Additionally, the research …

Assisted by a Mellon planning grant and led by principal investigator Sarah Thomas, a Cornell University project team investigated the potential of significant structural reorganization that would increase the value of the Library’s services to the University. The study revealed that the proposed benefits of restructuring are better support for scholarly creativity and communication; use of library space that privileges library users; more cost-effective allocation of resources; and the development of a new infrastructure to permit new relationships between libraries to flourish, enabling improved services at lower cost. To provide information from all the relevant stakeholders who would be affected …

Informed Discussion In Information Technology Survey Courses, Amber Settle, André Berthiaume, Evelyn Lulis, Abdulrahman Mirza, Saudi Arabia

Amber Settle

Structured debates have been suggested as a way to help students understand the basic ethical, so"cial, and legal issues inherent in information technology. In this paper, we present evidence that a form of less structured debates we call informed discussions provide equal benefits. As with debates, informed discussions allow for a high-level of participation, demand that students conduct significant research, and provide an interactive environment. However, informed discussion is more engaging for certain populations. Our work is based on debates and informed discussions conducted in three courses. Two of these courses are at the undergraduate level and one is a …

The Relative Relevance Of Cash Flow And Accrual Information: A Multi-Method Approach, Divesh Sharma, Errol Iselin Aug 2003

The Relative Relevance Of Cash Flow And Accrual Information: A Multi-Method Approach, Divesh Sharma, Errol Iselin

Errol Iselin

This multi-method study reports the results of two complementary experiments investigating the relevance of cash flow and accrual information. A behavioural field experiment investigated differences in the accuracy of solvency assessments between commercial lending managers using cash flow information and those using accrual information. Results indicated that commercial lending managers using cash flow information made more accurate solvency assessments than managers using accrual information. Results of an archival quantitative modeling experiment complemented these results and indicated cash flow information had incremental information content beyond accrual information. Our results confirmed the decision-usefulness of cash flow information and supported the mandate of …

Competitive Posture And Ipo Performance In High Technology Firms, Anthony Wilbon Aug 2003

Competitive Posture And Ipo Performance In High Technology Firms, Anthony Wilbon

Anthony Wilbon

Small to medium sized technology firms significantly impact the national and world economy and it is paramount that the best-managed firms have long term success. Empirical analysis must determine the competitive posture that will enhance performance and increase success rates for this population. This research examines the competitive posture of 168 high technology initial public offering (IPO) firms from 1992 and their short term and long term performance. Content analysis of the IPO prospectus provides the source of data for the variables. The research supports the hypotheses that pioneering competitive posture outperform others in the population.

Managing Soft Change Projects In The Public Sector, Lynn Crawford, Kerry Costello, Julien Pollack, Lesley Bentley Jul 2003

Managing Soft Change Projects In The Public Sector, Lynn Crawford, Kerry Costello, Julien Pollack, Lesley Bentley

Lynn Crawford

Public sector organisations worldwide are under pressure to increase efficiency while delivering improved and integrated services. Governments are promoting adoption of project-based management and use of formal project management methodologies developed in the context of essentially hard projects in industries where goals and methods are well defined. Problems in applying hard project management practice to the business of government and, in particular, to soft projects such as organisational change, challenge current project management standards and practices. Some writers and researchers have turned to soft systems thinking for enlightenment. They have identified possible links between project management practice and Soft Systems …

Implementing An Employee Survey That Is Linked To Business Strategy, Carol Gill Jul 2003

Implementing An Employee Survey That Is Linked To Business Strategy, Carol Gill

Carol Gill

A previous article published in this magazine concluded that whilst many organisations have adopted employee surveys as regular HRM practice it is only when surveys are linked to organisational strategy and implemented effectively that they can make a contribution. This article articulated two principles, firstly organisations should only ask what they want and need to know (relevant data) and they should be able and willing to act on what they find (actionable data). This article focuses on the implemenation of an employee survey that is consistent with these two principles.

Causes Of Delay And Cost Overruns In Construction Of Groundwater Projects In Developing Countries: Ghana As A Case Study, Yaw Frimpong, Jacob Oluwoye, Lynn Crawford

Lynn Crawford

Delay and cost overruns are common in construction projects and groundwater construction projects in Ghana are not an exception. The paper presents the results of a questionnaire survey conducted to identify and evaluate the relative importance of the significant factors contributing to delay and cost overruns in Ghana groundwater construction projects. Respondents of this survey included personnel from owners, consultants and contractors involved in groundwater projects in Ghana. The results of the study revealed the main causes of delay and cost overruns in construction of groundwater projects included: monthly payment difficulties from agencies; poor contractor management; material procurement; poor technical …
