Physical inactivity is one of the major contributors to ill health and, hence, productivity costs in Australia. While the workplace is increasingly recognised as an appropriate site for promoting healthy behaviour, the effectiveness of workplace physical activity programs remains to be demonstrated, particularly with regards to participants’ motivation to achieve sustained positive physical activity behaviour change. This exploratory study examined how participation in the Global Corporate Challenge (GCC) affected participants’ motivation to sustain regular physical activity. The GCC is a commercially operated four-month program based on the 10,000 steps-a-day concept. Three distinct phases in terms of participant motivation were identified …

People are often attracted to unique natural environments, but what makes them continually return to these locations, especially when considerable time and effort are required to get there? This paper discusses the methods and findings of a research project aimed at identifying and exploring how visitors develop an attachment to the remote Ningaloo Marine Park in north-western Australia. This Marine Park attracts a high percentage of repeat visitors (55%) and in order to determine the complex aspects contributing to this attachment, photo-elicitation was employed. Photo-elicitation is a qualitative technique where participants are asked to take photographs relating to the concept …

Overseas Students In Australia: An Experiential View, Maria Ryan, Madeleine Ogilvie

Maria M Ryan

Overseas students have access to a number of learning opportunities available by virtue of a highly competitive tertiary education market system. Despite the increasing trend for remote, online-based learning programs, many students elect to travel outside their home country to experience the cultural difference of studying abroad. The benefit is symbiotic, with crucial university funding being attracted by increased numbers of overseas students seeking an enriched studying experience. The focus of this paper is the on-campus learning experience received by expatriate students studying in Australia and Singapore. How these students adapt to the different physical, social and emotional environments is …

This paper is part of a larger long-term study exploring product definitions, consumer motives and social interaction using Australian firearm consumption as the case. Nine years of ethnographic research demonstrates the multi-faceted nature of what is a niche cloistered consumption activity. The findings show that shooters not only love their guns, but appreciate specific aspects of the product; namely, mechanical precision, mechanical potential, martial potential, nostalgic symbolism, recreation and functional utility. Notwithstanding, shooters also value firearms for the opportunity to derive a sense of self, through cathexis, contamination and self-extension.
