Firm Strategic Control: Direct Ownership, Indirect Ownership, Dispersion And Board Of Directors, Timothy Kiessling, Keith Duncan
Firm Strategic Control: Direct Ownership, Indirect Ownership, Dispersion And Board Of Directors, Timothy Kiessling, Keith Duncan
Keith Duncan
Our empirical study of 246 Directors, financial executives, accountants and credit/security analysts explore the concept of firm strategic control and what theoretically developed attributes contribute to an entity having strategic control over another. Our results suggest that strategic control is established with 100 per cent ownership but where there is less than 60-64% ownership then other strategic control attributes are necessary. Our results delve into what combinations of Direct ownership, indirect ownership, dispersion and Board of Director representation are required for strategic control.
Sustainability- The Missing Ingredient In Strategy, Ingrid Bonn, Josie Fisher
Sustainability- The Missing Ingredient In Strategy, Ingrid Bonn, Josie Fisher

While strategy has been addressed in the literature since the 1960s and sustainability has received a lot of attention recently, there has been little attention paid to the question of how sustainability considerations might be integrated into an organisation's strategy. In this paper a framework that outlines how sustainability can be addressed strategically in organisations is introduced and analysed. It is argued that all three dimensions of sustainability- economic, environmental and social- must be integrated into all aspects of an organisation's strategy and need to be addressed on an ongoing basis.
The Use Of Persuasion Management Strategies By Identity-Vulnerable Consumers: The Case Of Heterosexual Male Shoppers, Linda Zayer, Cele Otnes
The Use Of Persuasion Management Strategies By Identity-Vulnerable Consumers: The Case Of Heterosexual Male Shoppers, Linda Zayer, Cele Otnes
Linda Tuncay Zayer
This paper investigates the relevance of Kirmani and Campbell’s (2004) typology of persuasion management strategies to one group of identity-vulnerable consumers, heterosexual urban male shoppers of grooming and fashion products. Our informants use seeker strategies to refine their conceptualizations of heterosexual masculinity, or to gain expertise. In addition to the seeker strategies Kirmani and Campbell identify, our informants employ three new seeker strategies and use previously identified sentry strategies as seeker strategies. We offer theoretical and managerial insights for those interested in the shopping behavior of vulnerable consumers, and more specifically, heterosexual urban male shoppers of fashion and grooming goods.

Information Literacy In The New Curriculum, Michiel E. Moll
Information Literacy In The New Curriculum, Michiel E. Moll
Michiel E Moll
South Africa has undergone major changes in the school curriculum. At the same time, international emphasis on the importance of Information Literacy has found reflections locally in many calls for the development of school libraries (e.g. Arnold, 2002: 178), but has remained a problem in the actual implementation. This is also reflected in initial teacher training which has moved Information Literacy to a skill of the teacher, rather than an essential part of the curriculum that they have to teach.
This paper first looks briefly at the changes in national curricula in South Africa, and then at the current curriculum, …

Leveraging Tourism Benefits From The Sydney 2000 Olympics, Bill Faulkner, Carmen Tideswell
Carmen Cox
This article aims to use the Sydney 2000 Olympics as a case study for reviewing the range of opportunities that exist for leveraging tourism benefits from major events of this magnitude. The method used to identify these opportunities was based on a series of industry workshops throughout Australia and a follow-up Delphi survey. The examination of the Sydney 2000 Olympics case has revealed that, beyond the visitors the event will attract in its own right, the tourism industry in Sydney and Australia more generally has the potential to benefit from a range of effects. These include longer term promotional spin-offs, …

A Student Perspective On The Use Of Team-Based Assessment To Achieve The Requirement To Be Creative: A Study Of Entrepreneurship Studies, Carmen Tideswell
Carmen Cox
This study reports the findings of a qualitative research project conducted with a group of university students studying entrepreneurship to explore how they perceived a team-based approach to assessment assisted their ability to generate a creative new venture proposal idea. Through the submission of written journals and analysis of these transcripts, it is evident that although initially the group-work approach was perceived with some degree of cynicism by students, upon completion of the task several advantages of working in groups were reported by students. In particular, the use of a collective effort to assist in devising a ‘creative’ idea was …
Guest Perceptions Of Hotel Loyalty, David Mason, Carmen Tideswell, Elizabeth Roberts
Guest Perceptions Of Hotel Loyalty, David Mason, Carmen Tideswell, Elizabeth Roberts
Carmen Cox
This research reports on a qualitative survey of hotel guest loyalty. The approach was unusual in several ways: It sought to measure loyalty in the general population of hotel users rather than selecting a population already known to be loyal, and instead of trying to identify personality traits in the guests’ psychology that might be important, or ranking features of the hotel that might be determining factors, guests were simply asked what the term hotel loyalty meant to them. This approach has the advantage of not being influenced by any particular theory or restricted by the scope of the questions …
