In an effort to promote engagement with organizations in the not-for-profit sector, Molloy College’s graduate business program includes an experiential learning component. Prospective graduates of the MBA program are required to complete a rigorous Capstone course, through which students provide consulting services to a not-for-profit organization. Tasked with finding solutions to real problems, the students must apply their cross-disciplinary knowledge and skills to develop a comprehensive proposal for their clients. In one short seven-week semester, class members must form teams with fellow students, meet their clients, assess the problems presented and develop comprehensive proposals. A Comparative Review Of Perceived Costs And Benefits Of Business School Accreditation Options, Daniel R. Ball

Faculty Works: Business (1973-2022)

Business schools are continually challenged with developing programs that prepare students for successful careers and meet the evolving needs of industry. An accreditation association can provide business schools with best practice guidelines that help them ensure quality in their educational programs and supporting processes. The choice of accrediting agency is an important one for each school and could impact its success in achieving its mission. This paper examines the three primary business program accreditation associations in the United States: The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB); The Accreditation Council for Business Schools & Programs (ACBSP); and The International …

Soaring House Prices Reflect A Shortage Of Homes Rather Than A New Housing Bubble, Peter D'Antonio Jun 2021

Soaring House Prices Reflect A Shortage Of Homes Rather Than A New Housing Bubble, Peter D'Antonio

Faculty Works: Business (1973-2022)

The 2020 COVID-19 pandemic has brought to light a flaw in the accounting and pricing of housing services in consumer spending (PCE) and the consumer price index (CPI). The dramatic shifts in housing usage caused by the pandemic have not registered at all in PCE. This paper takes a fresh look at the use of opportunity costs to measure housing services. It shows how the current gauge can miss real changes in services flows. The paper proposes that housing services be measured instead by hedonic methods, using new survey questions added to the Consumer Expenditure Survey (CES) and the CPI.

Covid Stimulus Fails To Benefit Hardest-Hit Sectors, Amanda Bonacasa, Mark Streiber, Peter D'Antonio, Meryl Rosenblatt Jan 2021

Covid Stimulus Fails To Benefit Hardest-Hit Sectors, Amanda Bonacasa, Mark Streiber, Peter D'Antonio, Meryl Rosenblatt

Faculty Works: Business (1973-2022)

This paper demonstrates the ineffectiveness of the COVID-19 stimulus checks distributed in 2020 under the CARES Act to increase consumer spending and provide economic relief where it was most needed. This is consistent with prior stimulus packages issued during severe economic downturns (1968, 1975, 2001 and 2008), where tax cuts and rebatesresulted in increased consumer savings and reduced levels of debt rather than increases in consumer spending. The intensity of the economic impact of the COVID pandemic, and the uneven recovery, was largely due to the need for ‘social distancing’ and the reduction of inperson interactions to help manage the …

Faculty Works: Business (1973-2022)

The impact of fruitful partnerships can go a long way to improve society and better the communities in which we live in. Student consulting teams have taken the initiative to conduct field research and establish a wide range of partnerships in order to raise awareness of a local non-profit and continue its mission toward sustainable growth. This past semester has brought about additional challenges that normally would not be present in order to complete their charge assigned by their client (e.g. non-profit) and do it with finesse. The capstone course is transformational in nature due to the students working with …

Cogeneration merges the production of usable heat and electricity into a single process that helps to reduce carbon emissions, energy waste and energy costs. Until now, this source of sustainable energy has been used mostly in the industrial sector, the consumer market is unknown. One type of cogeneration system, the Stirling engine, is a heat engine that is operated by a cyclic compression and expansion of air or other gas at different temperatures. This cogeneration system is capable of charging a smartphone’s battery using the heat of everyday objects like a hot cup or a radiator, or a human hand. …

Pandemic Pricing Policies: Professional Prerogative Or Political Plaything, Bruce Haller, Steven Kent Nov 2020

Pandemic Pricing Policies: Professional Prerogative Or Political Plaything, Bruce Haller, Steven Kent

Faculty Works: Business (1973-2022)

Pricing a product is considered an important component of the marketing mix that induces consumer behavior. During the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic, price gouging emerged from obscure rarely litigated business law to sensational above the fold headlines. $79.99 hand sanitizer went from a ridiculous pricing decision to an abuse of power and a criminal offense. This paper will begin with an overview of common pricing strategies and then examine the limits placed on pricing in the form of laws which prohibit price gouging. While many of the jurisdictions which make short term increases in the price of certain goods and services …

Students throughout their academic journeys become agents of change when they experience transformational learning. The students at Molloy College in conjunction with local non-profits have partnered to advance society with their field research. While the mission is fascinating for the assigned non-profit, what is truly amazing is how the capstone course shapes our students to become good citizens in our society. There are overarching rewards for all parties involved whether it be the students, faculty, members of the non-profit, and our community at large. Three consulting teams are created to address the most relatable charges to the assigned non-profit. However, …

Faculty Works: Business (1973-2022)

In alignment with Molloy College’s commitment to civic engagement, the MBA program requires prospective graduates to complete its Capstone course, which entails providing consulting services to a not-for-profit organization. The course requires students to apply their cross-disciplinary knowledge and skills to solve real problems for their clients. In one short semester, students must form working relationships with fellow project members, develop an understanding of their client’s mission and objectives, and propose solutions that address their client’s challenging problems. The semester culminates with the delivery of a written proposal, a formal presentation to the client, and a final reflection. This paper …

The Sustainable Closet, Ryan Mott, Jessica Strauber, Meryl Rosenblatt Mba Nov 2020

The Sustainable Closet, Ryan Mott, Jessica Strauber, Meryl Rosenblatt Mba

Faculty Works: Business (1973-2022)

The technology that created the boom in online shopping has turned the local thrift store into a mainstream phenomenon. Customers of the future will look for ways to recycle, resell or upcycle, and will be drawn to the incredible value of buying secondhand, with millennials and Gen Z adopting second hand faster than other age groups. This will have a significant positive impact on global sustainability, as the fashion industry produces 10% of all carbon emissions, is the second-largest consumer of the world’s water supply, and pollutes oceans with microplastics. The clothing industry follows oil as the second largest industrial …

Melding Ethical Behaviors Into Leadership Expectations: Seeking To Make The Phrase, "Ethical Leadership" No Longer Necessary, Maureen L. Mackenzie Ph.D. Jun 2020

Melding Ethical Behaviors Into Leadership Expectations: Seeking To Make The Phrase, "Ethical Leadership" No Longer Necessary, Maureen L. Mackenzie Ph.D.

Faculty Works: Business (1973-2022)

Remember 'E-Commerce'? It was a distinct and emerging discipline. Now E-Commerce concepts are easily integrated into traditional business courses. The term ‘e-commerce,’ seems redundant. YET, we as scholars still maintain a distance between ‘Leadership’ and ‘Ethical Leadership’. When will the phrase, ‘Ethical Leadership,’ fade from the business vernacular as redundant? As scholars, we can study the distinction and seek to meld them so fully that the terms become synonymous. This paper presents an educational path to help leaders see the overlap so that each can develop a personal roadmap to tightly integrate the concepts in to their business practices.

The Legal And Ethical Considerations Of Using Social Media In The Recruiting And Hiring Stages Of Employment, Bruce Haller, Daniel R. Ball Jun 2020

The Legal And Ethical Considerations Of Using Social Media In The Recruiting And Hiring Stages Of Employment, Bruce Haller, Daniel R. Ball

Faculty Works: Business (1973-2022)

The use of social media in the recruiting and hiring process raises both legal and ethical considerations for employers. According to a 2018 survey, 70% of employers use social media to screen candidates during the employment process and 48% use social media to check on current employees (CareerBuilder, 2018). The obvious potential for abuse has generated legislative action, ethical debate, and an extensive search for best practices. This paper will examine the current legal parameters of the use of social media at the recruitment and selection process stages of employment. The ethics and appropriate ethical considerations of social media as …

Soaring House Prices Reflect A Shortage Of Homes Rather Than A New Housing Bubble, Peter L. D'Antonio Ph.D. Mar 2020

Soaring House Prices Reflect A Shortage Of Homes Rather Than A New Housing Bubble, Peter L. D'Antonio Ph.D.

Faculty Works: Business (1973-2022)

Home prices have soared by 58 percent during the past seven years and now stand 15 percent above boom-time highs. Although this steep rise is reminiscent of last decade’s housing bubble, the root cause is very different and implies a sharply divergent path for the housing market in coming years. The price rise during the housing boom was a symptom of excesses in housing. In contrast, the current price rise signals the need for more construction as the market faces growing shortages. This paper introduces a new housing supply metric to show that the massive overbuilding during the housing boom …

Measuring Brand Equity In The Digital Environment, Lydia Vlachos, Meka Bendahan, Meryl Rosenblatt Jan 2020

Measuring Brand Equity In The Digital Environment, Lydia Vlachos, Meka Bendahan, Meryl Rosenblatt

Faculty Works: Business (1973-2022)

The internet has had a major impact on the balance of information that for so long worked in favor of brand managers. Consumers are now empowered to interact with brands, and are often willing to “co-create” by sharing their experiences, product knowledge and ideas with brand communities and stakeholders. Although brand equity is an important source of competitive advantage, previous conceptualizations do not reflect the unique characteristics of the internet, and the new participatory approach to branding. Christodoulides, De Chernatony, Furrer, Shiu, & Abimbola, T. (2006) addressed this gap by developing a series of constructs and scale items that aligns …

Organizational Identity And Esports In Higher Education, Brian M. O'Neill Oct 2019

Organizational Identity And Esports In Higher Education, Brian M. O'Neill

Faculty Works: Business (1973-2022)

The concept of organizational identity, originally developed by Albert & Whetten (1985), can guide the strategic decision making process of executives. In consideration of organizational identity, university administrators, cognizant of the competitive U.S. higher education marketplace, may promote an intended image to distinguish their schools from competitors and gain the attention of attractive student candidates. Despite the rapid emergence of esports at the collegiate level, no data is known to exist that links organizational identity to collegiate esports and its associated issues. The author proposes a research design, using a classification protocol employed by Gioia & Thomas (1996), in anticipation …

Bond Price Reaction To Being Placed On Credit Review: Does Ownership Concentration Matter, Robert Goch Oct 2019

Bond Price Reaction To Being Placed On Credit Review: Does Ownership Concentration Matter, Robert Goch

Faculty Works: Business (1973-2022)

Both financial academics and financial practitioners have explored the issue of how bond prices react to credit rating agency (CRA) ratings actions. While one would expect a positive price reaction if a bond is put on credit review for an upgrade and a negative price reaction if placed on review for a downgrade, the evidence has been choppy and mixed. Results were dependent on whether the bond issue was placed on review for an upgrade or downgrade and if the bond had a subsequent ratings change. The research issue to be addressed here relates to how bond ownership concentration relates …

Spectator Free Speech: Is The Right To Cheer A First Amendment Free Speech Right?, Bruce Haller

Faculty Works: Business (1973-2022)

This paper explores the parameters of the limits of sport spectator under current law. The nature of the venue will be examined. The difference between the arena of a public university, an arena subsidized by public funds or tax incentives, and a privately owned stadium will be compared and analyzed. Paying customers in a place of public accommodation have the right to speak, be heard and not have to hear offensive speech. Is there an assumption of risk involved in the foreseeability of what is known or culturally expected to occur in the sports or entertainment facility? Should a patron …

Faculty Works: Business (1973-2022)

This research is part of a semester-long project where the undergraduate Business students from Molloy College pitch their business and marketing recommendations to a local non-profit. The theme emerges from a pedagogical philosophy that it is essential to learn the significance that business has upon society while working with a neighborhood non-profit. For example, having students enter into the business world where profit is a healthy by-product and is not the main focus toward today’s career development is critical in developing tomorrow’s ethical and social leaders. The learning activity leading to this learning outcome requires the undergraduate business students to …

Vertical Farms And The New Green City, Brandon Oliva, Christopher Rontanini, Meryl Rosenblatt Oct 2019

Vertical Farms And The New Green City, Brandon Oliva, Christopher Rontanini, Meryl Rosenblatt

Faculty Works: Business (1973-2022)

Urban agriculture, urban farming, or urban gardening is the practice of cultivating, processing and distributing food in or around urban areas. In densely populated regions, urban agriculture offers a new frontier for land use planners and landscape designers to become involved in the development and transformation of cities to support community farms, rooftop gardening, and vertical farms. Vertical farming is an agricultural method of cultivating vegetables that combines the design of building and farms all together in a high-rise building inside the cities. This form of farming can produce food in vertically stacked layers, vertically inclined surfaces and/or integrated in …

Predictive Sports Analytics Using An Exponential Power Function, Robert Kissell Oct 2019

Predictive Sports Analytics Using An Exponential Power Function, Robert Kissell

Faculty Works: Business (1973-2022)

This paper introduces a predictive sports analytics model that can be used to i) rank teams, ii) estimate win probability, and iii) calculate the expected winning margin (spread) of a game. The model is based on an exponential distribution function and is solved using a log-loss function and maximum likelihood estimates (MLE). The most appealing aspect of this quantitative approach is that the model is objective, transparent, and testable. Readers can verify all calculations and results as the model does not employ any black box method. We apply this model to the 2018-2019 NFL season to rank teams, estimate scores, …

A Case Study Of Teaching Mba Quantitative Analysis Online, Daniel R. Ball Oct 2019

A Case Study Of Teaching Mba Quantitative Analysis Online, Daniel R. Ball

Faculty Works: Business (1973-2022)

Advancements in video capture and learning management systems (LMS) provide faculty with more tools than ever before to effectively teach quantitative business subjects to graduate students enrolled in blended and online courses. Students pursuing an MBA often come from diverse educational and professional backgrounds, with some continuing directly from undergraduate programs while others may be returning to school after spending years in the workforce. These students require instructional design that is both comprehensive and flexible to meet their various needs, accommodating the increasing preference for visual content delivery. Early in an MBA program, a course in quantitative analysis often serves …

Long Average Unemployment Duration Implies Better Job Market, Peter L. D'Antonio Ph.D. Mar 2019

Long Average Unemployment Duration Implies Better Job Market, Peter L. D'Antonio Ph.D.

Faculty Works: Business (1973-2022)

Long-term unemployment was one of the biggest problems during the Great Recession. Nearly half of all unemployed persons were out of work for six months or more. Since then, the average duration of unemployment has gradually diminished along with the unemployment rate, but it has nevertheless remained relatively long. In fact, the average duration is still longer than every prior post-WWII recession. Along average duration of unemployment has traditionally indicated structural impediments in the labor market, such as skills mismatches. Therefore, the current long average duration is naturally seen as a sign of continued weakness. In contrast, this paper posits …

Elevated Average Duration Of Unemployment Signals Improved Labor Market, Peter L. D'Antonio Ph.D. Jan 2019

Elevated Average Duration Of Unemployment Signals Improved Labor Market, Peter L. D'Antonio Ph.D.

Faculty Works: Business (1973-2022)

Long-term unemployment was one of the biggest problems during the Great Recession. Nearly half of all unemployed persons were out of work for six months or more (BLS, 2018, 2).1 This stood in sharp contrast to the experience in previous recessions, when unemployment stints beyond a half year were much less common. Since the Great Recession, the average duration of unemployment has gradually diminished along with the unemployment rate, but it has nevertheless remained relatively long. In fact, the average duration is still longer than every prior post-WWII recession. In the past, a long average duration of unemployment indicated structural …
