Seeking The Real Adam Smith And Milton Friedman, Jacob Bagha, Gene R. Laczniak Nov 2015

Seeking The Real Adam Smith And Milton Friedman, Jacob Bagha, Gene R. Laczniak

Marketing Faculty Research and Publications

In this paper we will analyze the relationship between free market principles and ethics through an exploration of how too many business managers often approach the ideas of Adam Smith and Milton Friedman. In doing so, we aim to provide a thoughtful foundation for future discussions of how we ought to navigate this intersection. We briefly examine questions such as: What is the relationship between the “best” economy in terms of efficiency and the common good for society? Is pursuing one’s individual economic advantage the same as promoting the general interest? As we analyze and discuss these questions, specifically in …

Distant Yet Near: Promoting Interdisciplinary Learning In Significantly Diverse Teams Through Socially Responsible Projects, Monica Adya, Bryan Temple, Donald M. Hepburn

Management Faculty Research and Publications

With global specialization of work units within organizations, interdisciplinary work practices comprised of collaborative efforts between technical and business teams are increasingly common in today's workplace. While higher education has responded by creating opportunities for remote teams to learn from collaborative work, occasions for interaction between remotely situated significantly diverse teams such as business and engineering are few. This study describes a pedagogical offering between U.S.-based business teams and U.K.-based engineering teams that delivers such an experience around mutually dependent, socially responsible projects. Results from student surveys and reflections confirm that the pedagogical design is able to generate perceived interdependence …

The Effects Of Securities Class Action Litigation On Corporate Liquidity And Investment Policy, Matteo P. Arena, Brandon Julio Apr 2015

The Effects Of Securities Class Action Litigation On Corporate Liquidity And Investment Policy, Matteo P. Arena, Brandon Julio

Finance Faculty Research and Publications

The risk of securities class action litigation alters corporate savings and investment policy. Firms with greater exposure to securities litigation hold significantly more cash in anticipation of future settlements and other related costs. The result is due to firms accumulating cash in anticipation of lawsuits and not a consequence of plaintiffs targeting firms with high cash levels. The market value of cash is significantly lower for firms exposed to litigation risk. Corporate investment decisions are also affected by litigation risk, as firms reduce capital expenditures in response. Our results are robust to endogeneity concerns and possible spurious temporal effects.

Comparison Of Nurse Staffing Based On Changes In Unit-Level Workload Associated With Patient Churn, Ronda G. Hughes, Kathleen Bobay, Nicholas A. Jolly, Chrysmarie Suby Apr 2015

Comparison Of Nurse Staffing Based On Changes In Unit-Level Workload Associated With Patient Churn, Ronda G. Hughes, Kathleen Bobay, Nicholas A. Jolly, Chrysmarie Suby

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

Aim

This analysis compares the staffing implications of three measures of nurse staffing requirements: midnight census, turnover adjustment based on length of stay, and volume of admissions, discharges and transfers.

Background

Midnight census is commonly used to determine registered nurse staffing. Unit-level workload increases with patient churn, the movement of patients in and out of the nursing unit. Failure to account for patient churn in staffing allocation impacts nurse workload and may result in adverse patient outcomes.

Method(s)

Secondary data analysis of unit-level data from 32 hospitals, where nursing units are grouped into three unit-type categories: intensive care, intermediate care, …

The “Integrative Justice Model” As Transformative Justice For Base-Of-The-Pyramid Marketing, Nicholas J C Santos, Gene R. Laczniak, Tina M. Facca-Miess Feb 2015

The “Integrative Justice Model” As Transformative Justice For Base-Of-The-Pyramid Marketing, Nicholas J C Santos, Gene R. Laczniak, Tina M. Facca-Miess

Marketing Faculty Research and Publications

Writing in Business and Politics, Santos and Laczniak (Business and Politics 14(1) 2012) formulated a normative, ethical approach to be followed when marketers e ngage impoverished market segments. It is labeled the integrative justice model (IJM). As noted below, that approach called for authentic engagement, co-creation, and customer interest representation, among other elements, when transacting with vulnerable market segments. Basically, the IJM derived certain operational virtues, implied by moral philosophy, to be used when marketing to the poor. But this well-intentioned approach raises a significant “So what?” question. Are such sentiments anything but lofty aspirations for idealists or are …

Foundations in Wisconsin: A Directory

The 2015 release of Foundations in Wisconsin marks the 34th production of the print directory and the 15th year of the online version. The directory is designed as a research tool for grantseekers interested in locating information on private, corporate, and community foundations registered in Wisconsin. Each entry in this new edition has been updated or reviewed to provide the most current information available. Most of the data was drawn from IRS 990-PF tax returns filed by the foundations. Additional information was obtained from surveys, foundation websites, annual reports, and newsletters.

Territorial Tax System Reform And Corporate Financial Policies, Matteo P. Arena, George Kutner Jan 2015

Territorial Tax System Reform And Corporate Financial Policies, Matteo P. Arena, George Kutner

Finance Faculty Research and Publications

We examine the effect of a permanent change to a country corporate income repatriation tax system on corporate financial policies. In 2009, Japan and the United Kingdom switched from a worldwide system to a territorial system for the taxation of repatriated foreign earnings, effectively reducing the tax liabilities of most multinational firms when repatriating earnings. We find that after the change firms accumulate less cash, pay out larger amounts through dividends and share repurchases, and invest less abroad. We do not find that the tax system change has significantly affected domestic investments even when controlling for capital constraints.

Network Connections In Reit Markets, George D. Cashman, Stuart L. Gillan, David M. Harrison, Ryan J. Whitby Jan 2015

Network Connections In Reit Markets, George D. Cashman, Stuart L. Gillan, David M. Harrison, Ryan J. Whitby

Finance Faculty Research and Publications

Relationships play a central role across the spectrum of real estate transactions. Whether negotiating prices, securing funding, or acquiring permits, knowing the right people provides multiple channels to facilitate deal making. To better understand the role of relationships in real estate markets, we examine how the connectedness of REIT directors is associated with deal making, growth, and profitability. We find strong evidence that REIT connections are positively associated with both deal making and accounting based measures of profitability, however, those relations do not translate into better market returns or higher valuations. One explanation of these somewhat contradictory results is that …

Political Risk And The Cost Of Capital In Asia-Pacific Property Markets, George D. Cashman, David M. Harrison, Hainan Sheng Jan 2015

Political Risk And The Cost Of Capital In Asia-Pacific Property Markets, George D. Cashman, David M. Harrison, Hainan Sheng

Finance Faculty Research and Publications

This study investigates the impact of political risk on the cost of capital for publicly traded real estate firms. More specifically, by using a sample of 102 REITs and listed property trusts, which hold nearly 6,000 distinct investment properties across the Asia-Pacific region, we find strong empirical evidence that increased exposure to political risk increases both the cost of equity financing of a firm and its weighted average cost of capital. Interestingly, no such linkages are apparent between political risk and the cost of debt of a firm. These empirical results are robust to a variety of alternative measures of …

Managerial Discretion: An Empirical Review And Focus On Future Research Directions, David B. Wangrow, Donald J. Schepker, Vincent L. Barker Iii

Management Faculty Research and Publications

Scholars have long been interested in when and to what degree managers are able to exert control over their organizations. In this review, we examine managerial discretion, or the latitude of action available to managers. Since its introduction, scholars have attempted to explain when managers will have discretion, what discretion means for organizational outcomes, and how discretion may differentially influence organizational outcomes when it enables or constrains leaders. Our review indicates that while a significant number of studies have examined discretion, few have attempted to validate the prescriptions of the managerial discretion construct. Furthermore, studies to date have primarily focused …

Honor Among Salespeople: Using An Ethical Role Play And Code Of Ethics Exercise To Develop An Ethical Framework In A Professional Selling Course, Rebecca Dingus, Alexander Milovic

Marketing Faculty Research and Publications

Building on recommendations from both sales educators and the AACSB, the authors propose a three-step approach to assist professors in teaching ethics in a Professional Sales course. An ethics module is presented that consists of an ethics role play, a discussion of “grey area” situations that a salesperson will often experience, and a Code of Ethics written assignment that will allow students to experience, analyze, and reinforce positive ethical behavior in order to help prepare them for sales careers. Following a detailed explanation of each exercise, student feedback is presented to support this multi-faceted ethics program as a valuable contribution …

Negativity Bias In Investors’ Reactions To Board Of Directors’ Risk Oversight Disclosure, Ikseon Suh, Joseph Ugrin Jan 2015

Negativity Bias In Investors’ Reactions To Board Of Directors’ Risk Oversight Disclosure, Ikseon Suh, Joseph Ugrin

Accounting Faculty Research and Publications

This study investigates how disclosure of the board of directors’ leadership and role in risk oversight (BODs oversight disclosure) influences investors’ judgments when information on risk exposures is disclosed. The theoretical lens through which we examine this issue involves negativity bias. Sixty-two stock market investors who engage in the evaluation and/or investment of stocks on a regular or professional basis participated in our study. Our results reveal that the addition of BODs oversight disclosure (positive information) does not carry significant weight on investor judgments (i.e., attractiveness and investment) when financial statement disclosures indicate a high level of operational and financial …
