Flow shop scheduling deals with the determination of the optimal sequence of jobs processing on machines in a fixed order with the main objective consisting of minimizing the completion time of all jobs (makespan). This type of scheduling problem appears in many industrial and production planning applications. This study proposes a new bi-objective mixed-integer programming model for solving the synchronous flow shop scheduling problems with completion time. The objective functions are the total makespan and the sum of tardiness and earliness cost of blocks. At the same time, jobs are moved among machines through a synchronous transportation system with synchronized …

Most companies operate to maximize profits and increase their market shares in competitive environments. Since the proper location of the facilities conditions their market shares and profits, the competitive facility location problem (CFLP) has been extensively applied in the literature. This problem generally falls within the class of NP-hard problems, which are difficult to solve. Therefore, choosing a proper solution method to optimize the problem is a key factor. Even though CFLPs have been consistently solved and investigated, an important question that keeps being neglected is how to choose an appropriate solution technique. Since there are no specific criteria for …

Many companies face challenges in reducing their supply chain costs while increasing sustainability and customer service levels. A comprehensive framework for a sustainable closed-loop supply chain (CLSC) network is a practical solution to these challenges. Hence, for the first time, this study considers an integrated multio-bjective mixed-integer linear programming (MOMILP) model to design sustainable CLSC networks with cross-docking, location-inventory-routing, time window, supplier selection, order allocation, transportation modes with simultaneous pickup, and delivery under uncertainty. An intelligent simulation algorithm is proposed to produce CLSC network data with probabilistic distribution functions and feasible solution space. In addition, a fuzzy goal programming approach …

Digital supply chains (DSCs) are collaborative digital systems designed to quickly and efficiently move information, products, and services through global supply chains. The physical flow of products in traditional supply chains is replaced by the digital flow of information in DSCs. This digitalization has changed the conventional supplier selection processes. We propose an integrated and comprehensive fuzzy multicriteria model for supplier selection in DSCs. The proposed model integrates the fuzzy best-worst method (BWM) with the fuzzy multi-objective optimization based on ratio analysis plus full multiplicative form (MULTIMOORA), fuzzy complex proportional assessment of alternatives (COPRAS), and fuzzy technique for order preference …

Supplier selection and order allocation constitute vital strategic decisions that must be made by managers within supply chain management environments. In this paper, we propose a multi-objective fuzzy model for supplier selection and order allocation in a two-level supply chain with multi-period, multi-source, and multi-product characteristics. The supplier evaluation objectives considered in this model include cost, delay, and electronic-waste (e-waste) minimization, as well as coverage and weight maximization. A signal function is used to model the price discount offered by the suppliers. Triangular fuzzy numbers are used to deal with the uncertainty of delay and e-waste parameters while the fuzzy …

The Impact Of Interwoven Integration Practices On Supply Chain Value Addition And Firm Performance, Shashi -, Madjid Tavana, Amir Shabani, Rajwinder Singh

Business Systems and Analytics Faculty Work

Drawing on the supply chain (SC) management literature, this article conceptualizes and empirically tests a framework that shows how both external and internal integration practices are significant and positively associated with SC value addition and firm performance. The framework also tests the impact of value addition as a reinforcing factor on firm performance. The outcome of this investigation is interesting for both SC researchers and practitioners because the current SC integration literature is conflicting. A structural equation modeling technique, using a sample of 366 large-scale manufacturing companies based in India, is considered in this paper to test the framework. The …

The Role Of Anticipated Emotions And The Value Of Information In Determining Sequential Search Incentives, Debora Di Caprio, Francisco J. Santos-Arteaga, Madjid Tavana Mar 2019

The Role Of Anticipated Emotions And The Value Of Information In Determining Sequential Search Incentives, Debora Di Caprio, Francisco J. Santos-Arteaga, Madjid Tavana

Business Systems and Analytics Faculty Work

We define a novel information acquisition model that accounts explicitly for the influence of positive and negative anticipated emotions in the evaluation and selection incentives of decision makers (DMs). The model focuses on the value assigned by the DMs to the information being acquired and its capacity to prevent regrettable decisions within a forward-looking sequential environment. We introduce a novel definition of value of information accounting for the two main uses that DMs can derive from it, namely, verifying the optimality or suboptimality of a potential decision and preventing the regret that may arise from a suboptimal decision. In particular, …

User acceptance of technology is essential to determine its success. The current paper incorporates the main properties of the technology acceptance models (TAMs) developed by management scholars into a pre-commitment signaling duopolistic framework, where two competing firms must decide the level of technological improvement of the products being introduced. As a result, the corresponding equilibria of the duopolistic technological games will be determined by demand-based factors, providing a novel approach and complementing the current supply-based economic and operational research models developed in the literature. The proposed model will be simulated numerically to illustrate the strategic optimality of the update process …

A Novel Three-Stage Distance-Based Consensus Ranking Method, Nazila Aghayi, Madjid Tavana May 2018

A Novel Three-Stage Distance-Based Consensus Ranking Method, Nazila Aghayi, Madjid Tavana

Business Systems and Analytics Faculty Work

In this study, we propose a three-stage weighted sum method for identifying the group ranks of alternatives. In the first stage, a rank matrix, similar to the cross-efficiency matrix, is obtained by computing the individual rank position of each alternative based on importance weights. In the second stage, a secondary goal is defined to limit the vector of weights since the vector of weights obtained in the first stage is not unique. Finally, in the third stage, the group rank position of alternatives is obtained based on a distance of individual rank positions. The third stage determines a consensus solution …

Self-Organizing Social Networks By Preference Similarity And The Networking Capacity Of Their Users, Debora Di Caprio, Francisco J. Santos-Arteaga, Madjid Tavana

Business Systems and Analytics Faculty Work

Consider the decision faced by the user of a social media site of whether or not to accept a friendship request from another user, given the limited amount of information available before deciding. We formalize the problem by defining the expected utility trade-offs derived from the request and simulate the resulting incentives numerically. These incentives provide the basis on which to build social networks determined by the different expectations and preferences of their users. Social networks are generated using a self-organizing map to cluster the decision makers (DMs) by their friendship acceptance behaviour. This behaviour is determined by the distribution …

A Practical Taxonomy Of Methods And Literature For Managing Uncertain Spatial Data In Geographic Information Systems, Madjid Tavana, Weiru Liu, Paul Elmore, Frederick E. Petry, Brian S. Bourgeois

Business Systems and Analytics Faculty Work

Perfect information is seldom available to man or machines due to uncertainties inherent in real world problems. Uncertainties in geographic information systems (GIS) stem from either vague/ambiguous or imprecise/inaccurate/incomplete information and it is necessary for GIS to develop tools and techniques to manage these uncertainties. There is a widespread agreement in the GIS community that although GIS has the potential to support a wide range of spatial data analysis problems, this potential is often hindered by the lack of consistency and uniformity. Uncertainties come in many shapes and forms, and processing uncertain spatial data requires a practical taxonomy to aid …
