The Comparative Roles Of Third Country Nationals (Tcns) And Host Country Nationals (Hcns) In Expatriate Adjustment: A Theoretical Approach, Timothy Veach

Faculty Publications - College of Business

Expatriate managers often face difficulties adjusting to professional, cultural and environmental differences when performing overseas assignments. Failure of an expatriate manager to adjust to the foreign work and living environment may undermine an entire overseas project. A broad spectrum of factors determining the success of expatriate adjustment has been explored in the research. Specifically, interaction with Host Country Nationals (HCNs), leading to the inclusion of such HCNs in an expatriate’s support network, has been identified as an important determinant of successful adjustment of expatriate managers. However, many firms, including Korean construction firms, send large numbers of Third Country Nationals (TCNs) …

Time-Varying Performance Of International Mutual Funds, H. J. Turtle, Chengping Zhang Jan 2012

Time-Varying Performance Of International Mutual Funds, H. J. Turtle, Chengping Zhang

We examine the ability of one- and two-factor regime switching models to describe US, developed, and emerging market mutual fund returns. We find that a two-factor fixed transition probability model adequately describes the multivariate series of mutual fund returns without the need to model time-varying transition probabilities. Mutual fund performance, as measured by a state dependent Jensen's alpha, varies with economic regimes that are defined according to the global equity market mean. Our primary two-factor fixed transition probability model shows that emerging market mutual fund alphas are often significantly positive in global bull regimes. Consideration of alternative second risk factors …

Nice Guys (And Gals) Finish First: Ethical Leadership And Organizational Trust, Satisfaction, And Effectiveness, Paul Shelton

Faculty Publications - College of Business

In this study we examined the relationship between ethical leader behavior and organizational trust, satisfaction with organizational outcomes, and perceived organizational effectiveness. A survey of working adults revealed that perceptions of ethical leadership are positively related to collective trust levels. Those who believed that their leaders acted as moral persons and moral managers rated their organizations as more competent, open, concerned for employees, and reliable while identifying more strongly with their employers. They also reported higher satisfaction with organizational outcomes and considered their organizations to be more effective. Direct supervisors were perceived as more ethical than CEOs. These findings provide …

Caring Capitalist (Chapter 15 Of Financially Alive: Wealth Creation. Social Responsibility. Biblical Values), Christopher Meade

The crisis of ethics and values is more evident in the world of business than in any other area. Many people have come to associate capitalism with corporate corruption. From big businesses to mortgage brokers to banking services to Wall Street, greed and self-interest appear unchecked and out of control. While some companies struggle to survive, their senior executives are still receiving staggering salaries, lavish bonuses, and ridiculous perks causing confusion and mistrust within their ranks. The average person can quickly become untrusting at best and disillusioned at worst. At times, it seems that making money at any cost, has …

Does More Mean Better? An Examination Of Visual Product Presentation In E-Retailing, Sarah Song Southworth Jan 2012

Does More Mean Better? An Examination Of Visual Product Presentation In E-Retailing, Sarah Song Southworth

Faculty Publications - College of Business

Because of the intangible nature of online shopping, consumers perceive online shopping as being risky. This study examined how this risk can be reduced specifically by using a more effective online product presentation method. A combination of the number of product views (one and four) and size (small and large) of the product image were used to examine their influence on consumer’s mental intangibility and perceived amount of information, in which the two constructs ultimately influence perceived risk and patronage intentions. The results from the study showed that both product displays influenced mental intangibility even though an interaction effect did …

Staffing And Recruiting Considerations For Financial Education Programs (Chapter Three Of Student Financial Literacy), Ryan E. Halley, Dorothy B. Durband, Sonya L. Britt Jan 2012

Staffing And Recruiting Considerations For Financial Education Programs (Chapter Three Of Student Financial Literacy), Ryan E. Halley, Dorothy B. Durband, Sonya L. Britt

Faculty Publications - College of Business

A financial education program is only as good as the people who staff it. In order to get the right people on staff, careful attention must be paid to the strategy and execution of recruiting and hiring. Underlying the strategy is the determination of which staff positions are needed and how the roles will be defined. Various questions need to be addressed, such as: What financial resources are available? What types of services is the program planning to offer? What is the level of counselor content expertise? What is the type and size of facility where counseling will take place? …

Contaminants In Land-Applied Biosolids: Characterization And Modeling Of Fate And Transport During Rainfall Events, And Determination Of Effects Of Triclocarban On A Freshwater Mudsnail, Ben D. Giudice

Faculty Publications - Biomedical, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering

Studies are described in which the fate and transport of contaminants in landapplied biosolids was characterized via direct measurements and then modeled successfully. Additionally, the effects of one such contaminant, triclocarban (TCC), were investigated in a freshwater mudsnail.

Rainfall simulations were conducted on soil plots amended with biosolids. Surface runoff and leachate was collected and analyzed for the endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) bisphenol A, 17α-ethynylestradiol, triclocarban, triclosan, octylphenol, and nonylphenol; sixteen metals; and estrogenic activity via the ERCALUX bioassay. Triclosan, nickel, and copper were detected at levels that might pose risk to aquatic life, though levels of metals in the …
