Graduate, 2nd Place: Assessing The Knowledge, Attitude, And Everyday Life Practices Adopted Among Eastern Illinois University Students Towards Sustainability, Joel Holison

2023 Awards for Excellence in Student Research and Creative Activity - Documents

The concept of sustainable development gained attention and came into focus with the publication of the Brundtland Report (Brundtland, 1987). later the Education for Sustainability (EfS) initiative was presented in 1997 through the “Thessaloniki Declaration” as a carrier of the common and single message (Knapp, 2000). Sustainable development is the way a country pursues its economic development that does not jeopardize the opportunity for future generations to achieve their development (Brundtland, 1987). Deforestation, land destruction, soil degradation, air and water pollution, and other types of environmental deterioration are paid in the name of economic progress. This detriment may outweigh the …

Ceo Celebrity Status And Readability Of Financial Statements, Benjamim Eduardo

2022 Awards for Excellence in Student Research and Creative Activity - Documents

The importance and influence of Chief Executive Officer’s reputation to firm value and performance has been a great subject of debate in finance. A 2015 survey by Webber Shandwick of over 1700 executives worldwide has shown that CEO reputation is a significant driver of company reputation and value. The survey showed that executives attribute 45% of their company’s reputation and 44% of company’s market value to the reputation of their CEO, on average. The external visibility of the CEO matters not only to shine a light on the company, but also as a channel through which the firm can tap …

The Decision To Play: College Football In The Era Of Covid-19, Jason Tabit Jan 2021

The Decision To Play: College Football In The Era Of Covid-19, Jason Tabit

Undergraduate Honors Theses

COVID-19 upended life around the world, including on college campuses across the U.S. where institutions restructured their class modalities, campus life, extracurricular activities, and intercollegiate athletics - including college football. We examine the factors that led universities to make their decisions to play or not play college football during fall 2020, hypothesizing that the decision to play would be consistent with the decision about class modality for health and safety reasons, and that monetary and political motivations would also play a significant role. We collected data for 249 institutions and used logistic regression techniques to test our hypotheses. We ultimately …

Impact Of Ceo Industry-Specific Vs. General Managerial Experience On Firm Performance, Risk-Taking Behavior And Ceo Compensation, Junnatun Naym

Student Honors Theses and MBA Research Papers

This paper investigates the impact of CEO cross-industry and specific-industry experience on firm performance, risk-taking behavior, and CEO compensation. Using hand-collected data for a large cross-section of CEOs over 1992-2017, we find that CEOs with cross-industry experience are not likely to help improve firm performance, tend to invest less on R&D, and are likely to receive pay premium. On the other hand, we document a nonmonotonic relation between CEOs’ specific-industry experience and firm performance as well as R&D. Particularly, CEOs’ specific-industry experience leads to higher firm performance and R&D investments until it reaches a certain threshold, especially among high growth …

How Do Household Characteristics Affect Children’S School Dropouts? Analysis Of Survey Data From Bangladesh, Nusrat Farah

2016 Awards for Excellence in Student Research and Creative Activity - Documents

This paper presents evidence on how children’s educational outcomes are affected by family, social and economic backgrounds in a developing economy by exploiting data from the Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey (BDHS) 2011. In a developing country like Bangladesh, a child’s educational outcome is not only dependent on government policies but also on the child’s social and economic background. In this paper an attempt has been made to answer the question — how household conditions affect the educational attainments of children. To answer this question an examination of proximate factors associated with school dropouts has been conducted by developing Ordinary …

Training program evaluation is essential in developing and sustaining effectivetraining interventions. More specifically, measuring learning transfer is essential toany training program as it determines whether learning has occurred and if thelearning objectives have been met. Kirkpatrick (2005), stated that training programevaluation is used “to decide if a program should be continued, to decide if aprogram should be modified, and to demonstrate the value of training – and thusjustify our existence [as trainers/human performance technologists/consultants]” (p.19). The purpose of this study was to describe challenges in evaluating training andhow technology can aid in this process.

New Gripping And Binding Device Greatly Improves Preparation Of Natural Clasts For Rfid Tracking, Samuel Slaven, Isaac Slaven, Alison M. Anders Jan 2014

New Gripping And Binding Device Greatly Improves Preparation Of Natural Clasts For Rfid Tracking, Samuel Slaven, Isaac Slaven, Alison M. Anders

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

Radio frequency identification technology (RFID) has allowed for tracking of individual clasts implanted with passive integrated transponder (PIT) tags through sedimentary systems, providing recovery rates much higher than older sediment tagging methods such as painted or magnetic clasts. However, preparation of natural clasts for PIT tag implantation has been time-consuming and dangerous with rates of catastrophic failure of clasts of ∼66% or more. Moreover, failure rates increase as clast size decreases. The authors present an improved methodology that provides nearly 100% success rates and allows for drilling of clasts down to 23 mm along the intermediate diameter. The gripping and …

Libraries And Total Quality: Making The Patron A Partner, Todd Bruns, Rendong Bai Jun 2013

Libraries And Total Quality: Making The Patron A Partner, Todd Bruns, Rendong Bai

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

Libraries began to see service competition for the first time in the 1990s, due to the Internet and Google. The necessity of being more customer-focused became apparent, and this resulted in the creation of LibQUAL+, a tool developed to quantitatively measure the quality of customer service (Saunders, 2007). While LibQUAL+ serves as a first step toward increasing quality and value for patrons, library commitment to responding to survey results is essential.

Although LibQUAL+ has been used by a wide range of libraries, this paper focuses on the use of LibQUAL+ by academic libraries, using two university libraries (Vanderbilt University and …

Collaboration Between Private Sector And Academia: Arewe Compromising Our Engineering Programs?, Rigoberto Chinchilla

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

A central theme in the past ASEE Main Plenary in San Antonio, Texas, was the need to prepare our students for an “effective industrial practice.” Most panelists stressed the fact that “nowadays companies do not want to spend too much in training.” The direct implication at the end of the plenary was that academia was somehow “obligated” to supply engineers with the “right skills” for these companies. With the increased pressure in cost saving, according to the panelists in the plenary, the private sector has suggested that academia has to build a curriculum “ad-hoc” so they can hire “good engineers” …

Performance Modeling Of Distributed Collaboration Services With Independent Inputs/Outputs, Toqeer A. Israr, Gregor V. Bochmann Jan 2013

Performance Modeling Of Distributed Collaboration Services With Independent Inputs/Outputs, Toqeer A. Israr, Gregor V. Bochmann

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

This paper deals with modeling and performance analysis of dis-tributed applications, service compositions and workflow systems. From the functional perspective, the distributed application is modeled as an activity in-volving several roles, where behavior is defined in terms of compositions from several sub-activities using the standard sequencing operators found in UML Activity Diagrams. Each activity is characterized by a certain number of input and output events, and the performance of the activity is defined by the mini-mum delays that apply for a given output event in respect to each input event. We use a partial order to model these events, whose …

The Equivalence Of Internet Versus Paper-Based Surveys In It/Is Adoption Research In Collectivistic Cultures: The Impact Of Satisficing, Jiaming Fang, Chao Wen, Victor Prybutok Jan 2013

The Equivalence Of Internet Versus Paper-Based Surveys In It/Is Adoption Research In Collectivistic Cultures: The Impact Of Satisficing, Jiaming Fang, Chao Wen, Victor Prybutok

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

An increasing proportion of information technology (IT)/information system adoption research collects data using online surveys. However, a paucity of research assesses the equivalence of paper-based versus Internet-based surveys in collectivistic cultures. Furthermore, no theoretical or empirical research investigates how cultural differences between collectivistic and individualistic cultures influence the measurement equivalence (ME) of these survey modes. To explore these issues, online and paper-based surveys with comparable samples were carried out in both an individualistic (the USA) and a collectivistic culture (China). Confirmatory factor analysis was conducted to examine the ME across both survey modes in these different cultures. Results indicate that …
