The Recreational Fishing Advisory Committee (RFAC) was concerned over the delay in time in progressing this issue and recommended that the issue of trout stocking for recreational purposes be progressed in isolation. This matter was referred to the Recreational Freshwater Fisheries Stakeholder Sub-Committee (RFFSS) to progress the recreational aspects of stocking trout within State public waters. This strategy represents a significant step in ensuring the appropriate level of management is provided for the translocation of trout into and within Western Australia for recreational purposes. Fishing for crustaceans including southern and western rock lobster and deep-sea crab species on the south coast of Western Australia began in the 1960s and has developed significantly through improvements in technology, vessel reliability and the risk and endeavour of some fishers. The expansion in the capacity of the fleet has lead to the development of two managed fisheries.

This paper provides a brief outline of the history of the fishery; details the fishing and management methods presently used; and discusses the options available for future management, particularly ways of limiting fishing effort.
