STRENGTHENING SAFETY CULTURE BY LEVERAGING THE DAILY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
There is abundant evidence that links a strong culture of safety with improved patient and staff experience. However, there has been no clear avenue identified as to how to achieve this metric.
A team in a large academic tertiary teaching hospital set about leveraging their daily managing system (DMS) to attain improvement in their institution’s safety. The goals of this quality improvement project were to use DMS to identify and report safety concerns and increase frontline team knowledge and comfort with reporting safety concerns during Gemba walks.
A root cause analysis …

Faculty And Staff Perception Of Financial Fraud In Higher Education, Stephanie Hammons
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
This research was designed to survey full-time faculty and staff, from multiple universities, about their experience of fraud within their current and previous institution. Through the survey, we were provided insight into the perception of fraud within higher education institutions and the faculty and staff perception of how the institution handled it. Through the information provided in the survey, it is revealed if whether fraud is a rare occurrence at most institutions or if whether it is a bigger problem than it appears to be. In addition, we will learn how many instances of fraud within different institutions participants have …

Perspectives On Sabbaticals And Job Satisfaction In Nonprofit Organizations, Beth Anne Spacht
Perspectives On Sabbaticals And Job Satisfaction In Nonprofit Organizations, Beth Anne Spacht
School of Professional and Continuing Studies Nonprofit Studies Capstone Projects
For mission-driven organizations with limited resources to invest in employee salary and development, retaining top talent is a critical challenge. The monetary toll of turnover is particularly harmful to small organizations, which make up 66.3 percent of the nonprofit sector. To keep staff satisfied and incentivized to stay, nonprofits need to innovate creative new strategies to retain employees. The nonprofit sabbatical, a period of rest and renewal given to reward years of service, is one possible solution to reduce burnout and reward longevity. This exploratory study investigated the benefits and challenges of nonprofit sabbaticals in relation to theories of job …

There is recognition that working in the aged care setting can be physically and psychologically demanding, stressful and can lead to staff burnout. These types of demands can result in reduced job satisfaction, disengaged staff and can be detrimental to care delivery. In order to address these issues in a 52 bed sub - acute geriatric hospital within Australia, a self-care program was initiated to support staff wellbeing. The staff (nursing, allied health, managers, security staff) themselves were engaged in co-designing the self-care program alongside the project team. The Wellness Wednesday program runs for 45-60mins every Wednesday for eight weeks …
Exploring ‘People’ As The Key Element In Enterprise Architecture Implementation: A Critical Realist Perspective, Edi Triono Nuryatno
Exploring ‘People’ As The Key Element In Enterprise Architecture Implementation: A Critical Realist Perspective, Edi Triono Nuryatno
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
TOGAF (2009) describes the purpose of Enterprise Architecture (EA) is to optimise enterprisewide systems - the often-fragmented legacy of data processes (both manual and automated) - into an integrated environment that is responsive to change and supports the delivery of the business strategy (The Open Group Architecture Framework [TOGAF], 2009). However, for a number of reasons organisations still have difficulties establishing an effective EA (Raadt & Vliet, 2008; Gartner, 2009; and Janssen & Klievink, 2012, among others) and various reports suggest up to two thirds of implementations do not fulfil expectations (Roeleven, 2010). Being organisation wide with a strong governance …

Overcoming Fraud & Dishonesty In The Hospitality Industry, James Peter Murphy
Overcoming Fraud & Dishonesty In The Hospitality Industry, James Peter Murphy
Conference papers
The licensed industry is an increasingly competitive market place, many bars have responded by empowering staff and undertaking structural and management reforms in recent years. Undoubtedly, these changes have significantly raised the levels of customer service and enhanced customer satisfaction. Paradoxically these changes, combined with the responsibilities allocated to bar staff and management to supervise and manage bars with autonomous control have created more fertile conditions, scope and opportunity for dishonest actions by staff members.
The way licensed premises approach the issue of staff fraud is changing in response to the increased risk. Many bars have historically been anxious to …

This research examines the strategic alignment between external and internal stakeholders’ perceptions of the benefits of parks. To achieve this objective, surveys were distributed to park agency staff, as well as a sample of residents in New South Wales, Australia. Findings revealed alignment between external and internal stakeholders, with executive managers’ perceptions being generally more favourable than staff and community. The paper pays particular attention to the alignment of internal stakeholders’ (staff) perceptions, which is important for establishing and defending the market position of parks. A high degree of strategic alignment was found between executive and staff for personal benefits. …
Nursing Staff Participation In Chart Audits Increases Documentation Compliance, Susan Elaine Nelson
Nursing Staff Participation In Chart Audits Increases Documentation Compliance, Susan Elaine Nelson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Clinical documentation is an essential quality element that is often not adequately completed. Current data demonstrate that 32% of home health claims do not meet the requirements for federal reimbursement. Rogers's diffusion of innovation was used as a conceptual framework to guide this quality improvement project which determined whether home health nurses with education and chart audit experience demonstrate increased documentation compliance relative to nurses with education only. After completing a 1-hour education program on documentation, a convenience sample of home health nurses (n = 8) was divided between a chart-audit group (n = 4) and a no-chart-audit group (n …

[Excerpt] No discussion of governance in higher education would be complete without a consideration of the role of collective bargaining. Historically, most researchers interested in the subject have directed their attention to the unionization of faculty members. Given several recent decisions by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) that leave open the possibility that unionization of faculty in private colleges and universities may increase in the future, we discuss collective bargaining for faculty in the first section (Leatherman 2000, A16). Recently, however, attention has been also directed at the unionization of two other groups in the higher education workforce. Activists …

Talent Philanthropy: Investing In Nonprofit People To Advance Nonprofit Performance, Rusty Morgen Stahl
Talent Philanthropy: Investing In Nonprofit People To Advance Nonprofit Performance, Rusty Morgen Stahl
The Foundation Review
· This article argues that people are the primary asset that drives performance in the social sector, but that despite their importance they are undersupported. Funders could make major strides in their own effectiveness and in the performance of their grantees by explicitly investing in grantee talent and talent-support systems. Such support could build a critical mass of diverse leadership in society and dramatically improve the ability of the social sector to advance social change.
· The first part of this article reframes the talent challenge facing the nonprofit sector, highlighting urgent issues and chronic structural flaws.
· The second …

Administration Without Borders, Jonathan G.S. Koppell
Administration Without Borders, Jonathan G.S. Koppell
Publications from President Jonathan G.S. Koppell
To thrive in 2020, we must conceive of the field of public administration in the broadest possible terms. Phenomena that typically have been treated peripherally in our literature are emerging center stage in recent years, confirming that the “old” boundaries of our discipline do not reflect contemporary reality. After reviewing three key developments—the rise of mixed and nongovernmental institutions in public policy, the increasing importance of market mechanisms, and the assertion of meaningful global regulation—an argument is made for a broader reconception of “publicness” that goes hand in hand with the embrace of governance in lieu of administration.
The Employment Relationship, John W. Budd, Devasheesh P. Bhave
The Employment Relationship, John W. Budd, Devasheesh P. Bhave
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
The employment relationship is the connection between employees and employers through which individuals sell their labor. This might consist of an immigrant day laborer paid by the bushel to pick fruit in the hot sun, a salaried manager who has been working in an air-conditioned office for the same company for 40 years, or innumerable other situations. Irrespective of situation, all employees and employers have fundamental interests they pursue through the employment relationship, all forms of this relationship are mediated by labor markets and states, and each instance of this relationship is governed by some form of a contract, ranging …

What Are The Effects Of Work Restructuring On Employee Well-Being And Firm Performance? Evidence From Telecommunications Services, Rosemary Batt
Rosemary Batt
The purpose of this study was to assess whether there are benefits to employees and firms associated with new forms of work organization and human resource and industrial relations practices. I examine a series of interrelated questions that may be summarized as follows. First, does participation in either total quality improvement teams or self-directed teams have benefits for workers, managers, and firms? If benefits exist, are they undermined by the negative effects of understaffing and job insecurity associated with downsizing? And finally, is there a coherent set of work organization, human resource, and industrial relations practices that provides mutual gains …

A New Alliance In New York State: A Progress Report On The Labor Movement’S Restructuring, Capacity Building, And Programmatic Work, Jeff Grabelsky
Jeffrey Grabelsky
The labor movement in New York State (NYS) has undergone a dramatic restructuring that is part of a national American Federation of Labor–Congress of Industrial Organizations program called the New Alliance. The purpose of the New Alliance is to build the capacity of local labor movements and to empower unions to help shape a region’s political and economic agenda. The restructuring in NYS led to the consolidation of twenty-five central labor councils into five area labor federations, each of which is developing the resources, staff, and leadership to help grow labor’s regional power across the state. This article describes the …

The Interactive Effects Of Different Accounting Controls On Subordinates' Behaviour And Performance, Chong M. Lau
The Interactive Effects Of Different Accounting Controls On Subordinates' Behaviour And Performance, Chong M. Lau
Research outputs pre 2011
Prior research suggests that goal setting and an emphasis en meeting tight budget targets may influence the extent of subordinates' performance and slack creation. This study hypothesizes that other accounting controls may moderate these relationships. Specifically, it hypothesizes that: (i) budgetary performance is increased and (ii) budgetary slack creation is decreased when an emphasis on setting and meeting tight budget targets is complemented with a high extent of cost control. The results support a significant two-way interaction between Emphasis on setting and meeting tight budget targets and Cost control affecting budgetary performance. A significant two-way interaction between Emphasis en setting …
The Flexible Organization Design: Advantages And Pitfalls, Chris Du Boulay
The Flexible Organization Design: Advantages And Pitfalls, Chris Du Boulay
Research outputs pre 2011
Organization design, mission statements and management strategy are not often given the emphasis they deserve within the human service sector. These issues are given a great deal of emphasis within the mainstream commercial sector.
In the minds of many human service boards of management these issues are seen as secondary, behind the primary aim of assisting clients. While this priority is commendable, the secondary issues are rarely addressed sufficiently. The result is that the organization loses direction and fails to remain abreast of the changing demands of the client population.
