Bowl Games, Peyton Manning, Reggie White, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
It seems to me that the parade of bowl games has become endless. It's as if there has been some creeping growth over the past several years forming bowl games in the same way kudzu expands on its own in warm humid climates. What once was the Twelve Nights of Bowl Games has turned into the National Football Coaches Bowl Game Telethon sponsored by the National Association of Insomniacs.

Boeing-Airbus Subsidy Dispute: A Sequel, Robert J. Carbaugh, John Olienyk
All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Business
After intensifying in the 1980s and 1990s, the longstanding dispute between Europe and the United States over government subsidies for the commercial jetliner industry again heated up in 2004. This time, however, the stakes were higher because both nations sued each other at the World Trade Organization over government subsidies paid to their respective commercial jetliner companies. The dispute over subsidies has heightened trade tensions between the United States and Europe, as both companies spar for dominance in the highly competitive industry of commercial aircraft.
This paper provides a sequel to "Boeing-Airbus Subsidy Dispute: An Economic and Trade Perspective," a …
Lack Of Diversity In College Sports Leadership, Richard C. Crepeau
Lack Of Diversity In College Sports Leadership, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
It was a month ago that my colleagues at the University of Central Florida in the Institute for the Study of Diversity and Ethics in Sport issued a fascinating report on the lack of diversity in leadership positions in Higher Education. One of the conclusions of the study is that this lack of diversity may contribute to the same lack of diversity in Division I Football Head Coaching positions. The conclusion seems more than likely, indeed even self-evident.

Real Exchange Rates Over The Past Two Centuries: How Important Is The Harrod-Balassa-Samuelson Effect?, James R. Lothian, Mark P. Taylor
CRIF Working Paper series
Using data for 1820-2001 for the US, the UK and France, we test for the presence of real effects on the equilibrium real exchange rate (the Harrod-Balassa-Samuelson, HBS effect) in an explicitly nonlinear framework and allowing for shifts in real exchange rate volatility. A statistically significant HBS effect for sterling-dollar captures its long-run trend and explains some 40% of its variation. For both real exchange rates there is significant evidence of nonlinear mean reversion towards long-run equilibrium and downwards shifts in volatility corresponding closely to the classical gold standard and Bretton Woods periods.

A Season Of Hope, C. William Pollard
A Season Of Hope, C. William Pollard
C. William Pollard Papers
Reflecting on how both Christians and Jews are "prisoners of hope" during Christmas and Hanukkah, Pollard offers his audience a hopeful vision of business, one in which management's servant leadership leads to a positive corporate ethos. Such leadership can, he argues, help to create organizations that are not just profit-driven but also morally conscious.

Innovation-Export Linkages Within Different Cluster Models: A Case Study From The Australian Wine Industry , D. K. Aylward
Innovation-Export Linkages Within Different Cluster Models: A Case Study From The Australian Wine Industry , D. K. Aylward
Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)
This paper examines innovation and export linkages within different levels of cluster development. The aim of the paper, using empirical data from the Australian wine industry, is to demonstrate that the association between innovation and export activity intensifies as the cluster develops. Dividing wine clusters into ‘innovative’ (highly developed) and ‘organised’ (less developed) models the paper uses selected core indicators of innovation and export activity to explore levels of integration within each model. This integration is examined in the context of Porter’s theory of ‘competitive advantage’, showing how these lessons can be translated to industry clusters in general.

On Sport and Society
Welcome back to the bizarre world of intercollegiate athletics. The news this week comes out of Notre Dame and several other institutions of higher learning where football coaches are fired with reckless abandon. A few weeks ago we saw the spectacle of the public humiliation of Ron Zook at the University of Florida. This week the big news is the public humiliation of Ty Willingham by the acolytes of purity at the University of Notre Dame.

Errors & Omissions Insurance: The Experience Of States With Mandatory Programs For Real Estate Licensees, James E. Larsen, Joseph Coleman
Finance and Financial Services Faculty Publication
Errors and omissions insurance (E&O) is a mechanism to transfer financial risk, resulting from honest mistakes or negligence committed by a service provider, from both the service provider and the consumer to an insurance company. Real estate licensees in 38 states are free to obtain this coverage if they so desire, but 12 states currently require their active licensees to have E&O. The purpose of this study is to present information that policy-makers should consider in deciding whether to implement a mandatory E&O program in Ohio. Survey data collected from the Real Estate Commission (REC) in the mandated states, 201 …

Mobility And Markets: Emerging Outlines Of M-Commerce, Ruby Roy Dholakia, Nikhilesh Dholakia
College of Business Faculty Publications
Mobile commerce—or m-commerce—is characterized by the emerging class of location-based commercial services delivered by a variety of handheld terminals such as mobile phones and palmtop devices. At the Conference on Telecommunications and Information Markets (COTIM)-2001, an international conference held in Karlsruhe, Germany, academic researchers and business practitioners shared their experiences and frameworks about m-commerce. Selected papers based on COTIM-2001 presentations are included in this Special Issue. This paper introduces the preconditions that led to the emergence of m-commerce, the main dimensions of m-commerce that distinguish it from e-commerce, and the key arguments from the contributions on m-commerce in this Special …
Experience Based Reasoning For Recognising Fraud And Deception, Zhaohao Sun, G. Finnie
Experience Based Reasoning For Recognising Fraud And Deception, Zhaohao Sun, G. Finnie
Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)
Fraud, deception and their recognition have received increasing attention in multiagent systems (MAS), e-commerce, and agent societies. However, little attention has been given to the theoretical foundation for fraud and deception from a logical viewpoint. We fill this gap by arguing that experience-based reasoning (EBR) is a logical foundation for recognizing fraud and deception. It provides a logical analysis of deception, which classifies recognition of deception into knowledge-based deception recognition, inference-based deception recognition, and hybrid deception recognition. It will examine the relationship between EBR and fraud as well as deception. It uses EBR to recognize fraud and deception in e-commerce …

This paper examines experience and knowledge, experience management (EM) and knowledge management (KM), and their interrelationships. It then proposes waterfall models for both EM and KM. The models characterize EM and KM as the integration of experience processing and corresponding management, that of knowledge processing and corresponding management respectively. The proposed approach facilitates research and development of KM, EM, and hybrid intelligent systems.

Marketing Research For Volunteering: A Research Agenda, Sara Dolnicar, Melanie J. Randle
Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)
Contributing an estimated AUD42 billion dollars a year to the Australian economy and US150 billion dollars to the USA, volunteering has become an industry sector of major importance. It has consequently attracted significant attention among researchers of various disciplines, including marketing. Nevertheless, the industry is confronted with ongoing challenges, particularly in the area of recruitment. This article provides a review of prior marketing-related studies and identifies a number of gaps in the research, such as a limitation in the past to a priori approaches to categorising volunteers, which has offered limited insight and conflicting results. The authors recommend a more …

Trade Integration And Political Turbulence : Environmental Policy Consequences., Per G. Fredriksson, Muthukumara Mani
Trade Integration And Political Turbulence : Environmental Policy Consequences., Per G. Fredriksson, Muthukumara Mani
Faculty Scholarship
This paper contributes to the unresolved issue regarding the effect of economic integration on environmental policymaking. In particular, we discuss the joint impact of trade openness and political stability on environmental policymaking. Our theory predicts that the effect of trade integration on environmental policy is conditional on the degree of political stability. Trade integration affects the stringency of environmental policies due to changes in industry bribery behavior, and the effect is conditional on the degree of political stability. The empirical findings support the theory and are robust to alternative specifications. The stringency enhancing effect on environmental policy of trade integration …
The Singapore-India Connection: A Tale Of Two Industrial Parks, Caroline Yeoh, Wongso Kevin, Wee Tan
The Singapore-India Connection: A Tale Of Two Industrial Parks, Caroline Yeoh, Wongso Kevin, Wee Tan
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
In recent times, Singapore has, as part of its regionalisation strategy, established industrial parks in various countries, including China, Vietnam, and India. The parks are marketed as a winning combination of the host country’s unique location advantages and Singapore-style efficiency and management know-how. Singapore’s foray into India, in particular, was marked by the setting up of the ITPL in Bangalore; a development that met with great success. However, with global businesses shifting interests towards India, and competing industrial parks emerging to meet the increasing demand, ITPL is faced with stiff competition from other industrial parks; and Singapore has since announced …

Weir River Estuary: Land Protection Plan, Chantal Lefebvre, Michelle Portman
Urban Harbors Institute Publications
If economic growth were the only measure of a community’s health and vitality, then the communities of Cohasset, Hingham, and Hull are fairing well. But this economic success is generally accompanied by changes in the physical landscape that can be unsettling for residents, especially when it means more development and expansion at the expense of culturally and socially important open space areas such as parks, woods, and marshes. The rapid pace and fragmented nature of such sprawling development gives communities little opportunity to come to terms with the long-term impacts, which in turn can lead to a sense of powerlessness …

Icarus In The Boardroom, Introduction, David A. Skeel Jr.
All Faculty Scholarship
Americans have always loved risk takers. Like the Icarus of ancient Greek lore, however, even the most talented entrepreneurs can overstep their bounds. All too often, the very qualities that make Icaran executives special - self-confidence, visionary insight, and extreme competitiveness - spur them to take misguided and even illegal chances. The Icaran failure of an ordinary entrepreneur isn't headline news. But put Icarus in the corporate boardroom and - as this book vividly demonstrates - the ripple effects can be profound. Ever since the first large-scale corporations emerged in the nineteenth century, their ability to tap huge amounts of …

Easing The Inferential Leap In Competency Modeling: The Effects Of Task-Related Information And Subject Matter Expertise, Filip Lievens, Juan I. Sanchez, Wilfred De Corte
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Despite the rising popularity of the practice of competency modeling, research on competency modeling has lagged behind. This study begins to close this practice-science gap through 3 studies (1 lab study and 2 field studies), which employ generalizability analysis to shed light on (a) the quality of inferences made in competency modeling and (b) the effects of incorporating elements of traditional job analysis into competency modeling to raise the quality of competency inferences. Study 1 showed that competency modeling resulted in poor interrater reliability and poor between-job discriminant validity amongst inexperienced raters. In contrast, Study 2 suggested that the quality …
