The Potential Of Erin Brokovitch To Introduce Organizaitonal Behavior Topics, J. Benjamin Forbes, Jonathan E. Smith Dec 2007

The Potential Of Erin Brokovitch To Introduce Organizaitonal Behavior Topics, J. Benjamin Forbes, Jonathan E. Smith

Organization Management Journal

Real organizational behavior is rich, and messy, and emotional, and at times painful, but at other times immensely rewarding. The movie, Erin Brockovich, captures this richness and provides an exciting means to introduce a variety of individual or micro- organizational behavior concepts (such as perception, personality, and motivation) typically covered at the beginning of the Organizational Behavior course. In this paper, we describe the use of the film, including a takehome viewing assignment, an in-class assignment, a description of clips and comments for in-class use, and suggestions for the types of issues to discuss in relation to the major topics …

Jane's Decision: Her Experience As A Plebe, Andra Gumbus, Jill Woodilla, Christopher C. York

Organization Management Journal

Jane (a pseudonym) describes her experience as a first year student at one of the military service academies sometime during the period 2000-2005. She portrays the rigors of training to be an officer in the US military service and the special burdens of being a good-looking, high-achieving woman in this environment. She provides an insider's perspective on the academy culture, including the importance of the honor code, and spoken and unspoken rules against fraternization and for protecting ―one's own. At the end of the case Jane must make a decision that could change the course of her life. The case …

"Where There Is A Will…": A New Exercise To Explore Distributive And Integrative Conflict Management, Joseph Seltzer, James W. Smither Dec 2007

"Where There Is A Will…": A New Exercise To Explore Distributive And Integrative Conflict Management, Joseph Seltzer, James W. Smither

Organization Management Journal

An exercise was developed to provide a quick and comprehensive exploration of conflict management styles and integrative versus distributive bargaining. Two brothers meet to divide nine items and cash from their father‘s estate. Some items are wanted by one brother more than the other, often because of information known to only one. One item requires an integrative solution to fully gain its value. A variation of the exercise is suggested that incorporates the relationship between the brothers as another variable in managing conflict. Teaching notes and examples of classroom use and student responses are provided.

Teaching A New Generation: The Differences Are Not Trivial, Steven I. Meisel, David S. Fearon Dec 2007

Teaching A New Generation: The Differences Are Not Trivial, Steven I. Meisel, David S. Fearon

Organization Management Journal

As organizational behavior learners apply managerial knowledge in classroom exercises or in the field, the hidden knowledge they hold of the cultural context of these applications works spontaneously to create meaning. This contextual knowledge is developed profoundly in our formative years; thus tacit experiential knowledge differs by generation. Today’s college-aged Millennials see organizational life and OB theory differently than yesterday’s Gen X, or Baby Boomer cohorts. These differences are revealed in an exercise using the vintage (1982) and current editions of the board game Trivial Pursuit. This activity asks learners to find the presence of generationally-cultivated knowledge in their daily …

On The Total Duration Of Negative Surplus Of A Risk Process With Two-Step Premium Function, Pavlina Jordanova Dec 2007

On The Total Duration Of Negative Surplus Of A Risk Process With Two-Step Premium Function, Pavlina Jordanova

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

We consider a risk reserve process whose premium rate reduces from cd to cu when the reserve comes above some critical value v. In the model of Cramer-Lundberg with initial capital u ≥ 0, we obtain the probability that ruin does not occur before the first up-crossing of level v. When u < v, following H. Gerber and E. Shiu (1997), we derive the probability that starting with initial capital u ruin occurs and the severity of ruin is not bigger than v. Further we express the probability of ruin in the two step premium function model - ψ (u,v), by the last two probabilities. Our assumptions imply that the surplus process will go to infinity almost surely. This entails that the process will stay below zero only temporarily. We derive the distribution of the total duration of negative surplus and obtain its Laplace transform and mean value. As a consequence of these results, under certain conditions in the Model of Cramer-Lundberg we obtain the expected value of the severity of ruin. In the end of the paper we give examples with exponential claim sizes.

Fuzzy Logic And Corporate Governance Theories, Z. Jill Barclift Dec 2007

Fuzzy Logic And Corporate Governance Theories, Z. Jill Barclift

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

[Excerpt] “Fuzzy logic is a theory that categorizes concepts or things belonging to more than one group. A methodology that explains how things function in multiple groups (not fully in one group or another) offers advantages when no one definition or membership in a group accounts for belonging to multiple groups. The principal/agent model of corporate governance has some characteristics of fuzzy logic theory.

Under traditional agency theory of corporate governance, shareholders, directors, and senior corporate officers each belong to groups having multiple attributes. In the principal/agent model of corporate governance, shareholders are owners or principals; directors are shareholders and …

Entrepreneurs Vs. Business Plans: A Study Of Practicality And Usefulness, Sam Pd Anantadjaya Oct 2007

Entrepreneurs Vs. Business Plans: A Study Of Practicality And Usefulness, Sam Pd Anantadjaya

The South East Asian Journal of Management

In higher education, the topic on business plan is relatively studied in great details to note the importance on formulating business plans. Business plans are regarded as the reference point for business people; managers and members of the board of directors, to really realize the business activities. At least, the topic on business plan, which are discussed and studied in universities, ought to have its own value in the real business operations. Many entrepreneurs, however, face difficulties in formulating structural business plans. Many entrepreneurs may not actually formulate business plans as they are regarded important in many classrooms’ teaching, to …

Adoption Of Innovative Information Systems By Smes: Comparing The Role Of Firm’S Enacted Capabilities Of Active Adopters And Non-Active Adopters, Noor Akma Mohd Salleh Oct 2007

Adoption Of Innovative Information Systems By Smes: Comparing The Role Of Firm’S Enacted Capabilities Of Active Adopters And Non-Active Adopters, Noor Akma Mohd Salleh

The South East Asian Journal of Management

The adoption of innovative information systems (IS) by small-and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) across heterogeneous culture, locales, and markets are a critical and an ongoing challenge. Such challenge requires more than just good ideas and extensive resources. It requires organisational capabilities that can be labelled as “enacted capabilities”. This study defines enacted capabilities as the firm’s ability to mobilise and deploy IS-based resources in combination or co-present with other capabilities within SMEs. Consequently, the aim of this study is to make a contribution by empirically examining the enacted capabilities of SMEs in developing countries that may influence the success of innovative …

The Effect Of Headquarter Integration Mechanisms On Subsidiaries’ New Product Success: From Control To Coordination Mechanism, Firmanzah Firmanzah Oct 2007

The Effect Of Headquarter Integration Mechanisms On Subsidiaries’ New Product Success: From Control To Coordination Mechanism, Firmanzah Firmanzah

The South East Asian Journal of Management

New product launching (NPL) to the local market by subsidiary managers is a strategic activity, which requires organizational supports from MNC global network. The NPL activity is marked by high level of uncertainty, risk, and market failure. Thus, a headquarter needs to integrate the subsidiary NPL into global strategy. There are two mechanisms to integrate subsidiaries’ activities during NPL process; coordination and control process. By testing the effect of each mechanism on role clarity and functional conflict, I found that coordination mechanism increase role clarity between headquarter and subsidiaries’ managers. In contrast, exercising control mechanism reduces role clarity and functional …

Enterprise Factors Contributing To The Success Of Malaysian Biotechnology Smes: A Grounded Theory Approach, Saridan Abu Bakar, Mohamed Sulaiman, Intan Osman Oct 2007

Enterprise Factors Contributing To The Success Of Malaysian Biotechnology Smes: A Grounded Theory Approach, Saridan Abu Bakar, Mohamed Sulaiman, Intan Osman

The South East Asian Journal of Management

While numerous empirical studies have been conducted in Western countries on biotechnology enterprises, little empirical research has been done in Malaysia especially in respect to the factors that contribute to the success of biotechnology small and medium enterprises (SMEs). In view of this, a study was undertaken recently in Malaysia to address this gap in the existing body of biotechnology knowledge. Using a grounded theory approach, this qualitative study managed to develop a conceptual framework that sheds useful information on the enterprise factors that significantly impact the success of Malaysian biotechnology SMEs. Specifically, this study found that organizational structure, innovation …

Organizational Model Of The Southern Asia Cluster Family Businesses, Vipin Gupta, Nancy M. Levenburg, Lynda L. Moore, Jaideep Motwani, Thomas V. Schwarz

The South East Asian Journal of Management

Recently, there has been an increased interest in the family business organization. Traditionally, the ideal typical organizational model was one where the management, governance, and ownership entities are kept separate. This principal agent model has been a subject of public debate in the wake of several corporate scandals. In the family business organization, significant management, governance and ownership is often with the members of a family & its trusted partners. It is common in the US to regulate the management, governance, and ownership roles of the family members by using competitive criteria for the involvement of different members. In Southern …

Identifying Strategies That Encourage Resolve To Exhibit Moral Courage, Jeff Barnes, David Christensen, David Rees Oct 2007

Identifying Strategies That Encourage Resolve To Exhibit Moral Courage, Jeff Barnes, David Christensen, David Rees

Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology

Recent highly-publicized business scandals involving accounting ethical failures have encouraged research and recommendations to teach business ethics throughout the business curriculum. Research studies provide evidence that increasing moral sensitivity and judgment is possible over short periods of moral instruction, however, having higher moral sensitivity and judgment does not guarantee that moral courage will be displayed under duress. This study identifies personal moral courage intention strategies to support morally courageous acts.
