An Integrated Decision Support Framework For Remanufacturing In The Automotive Industry, Akhilesh Kumar
An Integrated Decision Support Framework For Remanufacturing In The Automotive Industry, Akhilesh Kumar
Wayne State University Dissertations
In today's global economy, firms are seeking any and every opportunity to differentiate from competitors by reducing supply chain costs and adding value to end customers. One increasingly popular option, under growing consumer awareness and increasing legislation, is to reintegrate returned products into the supply chain to achieve economic benefits as well as improve sustainability. An important class of such "reverse" goods flows has to do with remanufacturing (reman), which refers to activities that restore returned products ("cores") or their major modules to operational condition for using in place of new product or distributing through other channels (e.g., spare parts). …
The Role Of Organizational Climate And Culture In Service Encounters, Beth Ann Heyart
The Role Of Organizational Climate And Culture In Service Encounters, Beth Ann Heyart
Wayne State University Dissertations
This study explored the link between culture and climate with respect to customer service ratings. Two hospital units, one with high customer service ratings and one with low customer service ratings, were identified for analysis. A mixed-method design was implemented to assess climate and culture on each unit. Climate was assessed with a survey that combined elements of Schneider, White, and Paul's (1998) Assessment of Service Climate Instrument and Litwin and Stringer's (1968) Organizational Climate Questionnaire. An ethnographic approach using observation, interviews and archival data analysis was completed to understand each unit's culture. Findings indicate high customer service environments rated …
Essays On International Corporate Cash Holdings, Yonghong Jia
Essays On International Corporate Cash Holdings, Yonghong Jia
Wayne State University Dissertations
This dissertation is composed of two distinct chapters. The first chapter is concerned with the secular trends in corporate cash holdings and the determinants of the changing cash policies for seven industrialized countries--Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, the US, and UK. In the first chapter, we document that a pronounced secular upward trend in cash holdings is almost systemic across sample countries over 1991-2008, with France exhibiting a modest rise and Japan a substantial decline. However, the driving forces underlying the cash pattern are not uniform across countries. While the evolution in firm characteristics necessitated elevated cash balances, the time-varying …

ABSTRACT

by
MARK GRUSKIN
August 2011
Advisor: Dr. Sudip Datta
Major: Business Administration (Finance)
Degree: Doctor of Philosophy
This dissertation is the first study to investigate public-to-private reverse leveraged buyouts (RLBOs). The first essay measures changes in profitability, financial structure, operations, and cost structure to detect actions taken during the private period. Results show that approaching the leveraged buyout there is an above industry level of free cash flow and capital expenditures, while growth options are at competitive levels. These factors in the presence of low ownership concentration suggest the existence of overinvestment.
Increased leverage …
The Effect Of Interactive Technology On Informal Learning And Performance In A Social Setting, Timothy Clay Boileau
The Effect Of Interactive Technology On Informal Learning And Performance In A Social Setting, Timothy Clay Boileau
Wayne State University Dissertations
This study is based on a qualitative multiple case study research design using a mixed methods approach to provide insight into the effect of interactive technology on informal learning and performance in a social business setting inhabited by knowledge workers. The central phenomenon examined is the variance in behavioral intention towards interactive Web 2.0 technologies in learning and performance-related activities, depending on social and cultural setting, observable in individual and group usage patterns.
The theoretical foundation for this study is drawn primarily from the activity theory model developed by Engeström (1987) and related research enabled by an ongoing review of …
A Cultural Analysis Of Information Technology Offshore Outsourcing: An Exercise In Multi-Sited Ethnography Of Virtual Work, Tara Eaton
Wayne State University Dissertations
This study is an exploration of how ethnography and anthropological analysis can provide new understanding of transnational, multi-sited research phenomena. Research focused on the work activities of one American client organization and its Indian IT service provider situated in the global virtual field of Information Technology (IT) offshore outsourcing. The Principal Investigator adapted and applied an ethnographic approach for her fieldwork in order to understand the norms, beliefs, and values about work, as well as the relationship between cultural differences and virtual communication. Dissertation findings offer new insight for anthropological discussions of globalization as well as suggest further development of …
Characteristics And Causal Factors Of Claims In Michigan Highway Construction Projects, Abel K. Sahlool
Characteristics And Causal Factors Of Claims In Michigan Highway Construction Projects, Abel K. Sahlool
Wayne State University Dissertations
The US highway system is the largest road network system in the world. MDOT administers about 9,722 route-miles, (28,000 lane-miles) of roadway networks in Michigan. Every year, hundreds of projects worth millions of dollars are let by the State Transportation Agency (STA).
Majority of these projects are successfully completed within the original scope of work, budget, schedule, and without litigation. However; some projects end up in litigation and disputes costing tax payers a great amount of money and the STA a great amount of resources. The number and cost of these construction claims has been substantially increasing in recent years. …
Social Movement Theory And Far Right Organizations, Frank Tridico
Social Movement Theory And Far Right Organizations, Frank Tridico
Wayne State University Dissertations
This research examines the organized far right movement and interviews members of four right wing organizations to understand their goals and operations. This study compares the utility of two social movement theories, Resource Mobilization Theory (RMT) and New Social Movement Theory (NSMT) to explain the functioning of the four organizations. Resource Mobilization Theory contends that change is done politically in the sphere of institutional power, while New Social Movement Theory argues that change occurs in civil society.
The study was qualitative in nature and involved in-depth interviews with 97 members of four far right organizations across two Midwest states. The …
A Mediated Model Of Trust And Its Antecedents In The Client-Consultant Relationship, William L. Solomonson
A Mediated Model Of Trust And Its Antecedents In The Client-Consultant Relationship, William L. Solomonson
Wayne State University Dissertations
This study seeks to improve the contributions of performance consultants, instructional design consultants, and training consultants by explaining the effect that several variables have on trust as a mediator to relationship commitment within the context of the client-consultant relationship. The participants were 521 college students from two 4-year universities. Participants were randomly assigned to one of eight scenario-based questionnaires which measured the effect of three manipulated variables - perceived level of expertise, shared values, and sharing of meaningful information - on trust as a mediator to relationship commitment. The ability to trust, the comparison level of the alternative, and dependence …
