The Ethical Safeguards Within Servant Leadership, Jae Webb
The Ethical Safeguards Within Servant Leadership, Jae Webb
Servant Leadership: Theory & Practice
Many of the prevailing strategies to address corporate misconduct are focused on an increase in regulation, greater oversight, and stricter punishments for offenders. Other strategies, often found in business schools, focus on developing cognitive moral reasoning skills. Both of these theories, by their nature, underestimate the power of context in ethical decision-making, as well as the importance of affirmative efforts to develop moral character. The following article explicates elements of servant-leadership theory that serve as ethical safeguards regarding a person’s ability to make ethical decisions, as well as aiding in the formation of contexts and cultures that facilitate ethical decision-making. …

The Relevance And Benefits Of Moral Intelligence To Servant Leadership, Kong Wah Cora Chan
The Relevance And Benefits Of Moral Intelligence To Servant Leadership, Kong Wah Cora Chan
Servant Leadership: Theory & Practice
Moral intelligence has a better chance of fixing morality-related issues instead of bandaging them and addressing the servant leadership best test stated by Greenleaf (1977/2002). Prudence—mature moral intelligence—is one’s skillful act in making the best, most caring alternative among all possible choices based on moral wisdom (Bradshaw, 2010). Morally intelligent people are conscious of aligning their values, goals, and actions with the universal principles of integrity, responsibility, compassion, and forgiveness (Lennick and Kiel, 2011). Such an alignment leads to purposeful living and organizational success. Borba (2001) advocated for building moral habits of empathy, conscience, self-control, respect, kindness, tolerance, and fairness. …

Building Resilient Business Students: Faculty As Servant Leaders, Jason L. Eliot, Holly Osburn
Building Resilient Business Students: Faculty As Servant Leaders, Jason L. Eliot, Holly Osburn
Servant Leadership: Theory & Practice
The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the normal cadence of life. These disruptions affected students in higher education in many ways as well increasing the stress and anxiety levels of college students and having a considerable negative impact on their mental health. Business students were not exempt from the negative mental health impact of COVID-19.
Aware of the stress its students are experiencing, higher education can play a role in creating environments which support learning and the development of skills to rebound from that adversity. This is particularly true for business schools who are also monitoring how business itself is being affected …
The Effects Of Team Potency, Leader Communication Frequency, And Goal Clarity On The Relationship Between Servant Leadership And Team Performance: A Focus On The Fundraising Profession, Jill R. Carroll
Servant Leadership: Theory & Practice
Previous research has shown that the practice of servant leadership improves team performance in organizations; however, the specific reasons for this positive influence are still being investigated. This paper puts forth a conceptual model that considers the mediating effect of team potency and the moderating influences of leader communication frequency and clarity of team goals on the servant leadership-team performance relationship. Based on a review of the literature, four propositions regarding the positive influence of these variables on the servant leadership-team performance relationship are put forth. The importance of the servant leader-team performance relationship and the effects of the moderating …

Relationship Of Servant Leadership, Perceived Organizational Support, And Work-Family Conflict With Employee Well-Being, Bruce E. Winston
Servant Leadership: Theory & Practice
The focus of this study was to test for relationships between servant leadership, perceived organizational support, and work-family conflict on employee perception of well-being. Data collection from 132 males and 103 females occurred through Qualtrics data collection service. Servant leadership and work-family conflict showed low to medium positive correlation. Multiple hierarchical regression of the three independent variables and control variables of age and tenure with supervisor showed significance for gender, thus separate multiple hierarchical regressions were used to analyze females and males separately. A significant regression was found for males, but not for females. A qualitative study followed the quantitative …

The Impact Of Scholarship In Servant Leadership: Journals And Institutions, Franklin G. Mixon Jr., Kamal P. Upadhyaya
Servant Leadership: Theory & Practice
This study examines the impact of research published in the two academic journals in servant leadership – International Journal of Servant-Leadership and the Servant Leadership: Theory & Practice. Although various metrics suggest that the latter (and younger) journal has generally been more impactful, other metrics indicate that more “home run” research has thus far appeared in the former (and older) outlet. Analysis of the institution-based data reveals that affiliates of the Spears Center for Servant Leadership have produced the most impactful research in servant leadership, followed by those faculty and others at Regent University, Utah Valley University, Our Lady …
Servant Leadership, Optimal Experience, And Meaningful Life, Kong Wah Cora Chan
Servant Leadership, Optimal Experience, And Meaningful Life, Kong Wah Cora Chan
Servant Leadership: Theory & Practice
Optimal experience – also known as Flow – was coined by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi in 1975 in his research study of joy, creativity, and the total involvement with life. Optimal experience is about focused attention and control of consciousness. Likewise, servant leadership is a conscious choice which aspires one to lead (Greenleaf, 1970). After a close examination of the philosophy of servant leadership by Greenleaf (1970), the attributes and behaviours of servant leaders by Laub (1999), Russell and Stone (2002), Patterson (2003), Keith (2008), Spears (2010), and Sipe and Frick (2015), it is argued that the work of a servant leader …

Abstract
This paper presents an overview of a study of the relationship between servant leadership and organizational commitment. The study included a convenience sample of 84 full and part-time employees of a health professions education unit within an academic health center. Participants were surveyed using the Executive Servant Leadership Scale (ESLS) to assess servant leadership and the Klein Unidimensional Target-free (KUT) instrument to assess organizational commitment. Data analysis was conducted using Kendall’s tau-b and Spearman’s rho. Results showed that there is a significant positive relationship between servant leadership and organizational commitment.

Servant Leadership: Theory & Practice
Recent police killings of unarmed African Americans in the United States and the subsequent protests and demonstrations against police brutality have resulted in more focus on the importance of collaborative relationships between law enforcement agencies and their communities. This quantitative correlational research study was conducted in one southern United States police department that incorporated a servant leadership philosophy, including its leaders being publicly heralded for their servant leadership practices that positively impacted its relationship with its community. The study examined if a relationship existed between perceived servant leadership of law enforcement leaders and line police officers’ job satisfaction. The study’s …

The Men Or The Mission: Can An Army Of Servants Become An Army Of Servant Leaders?, Douglas Gain, Phil C. Bryant
Servant Leadership: Theory & Practice
This paper evaluates the theory of servant leadership as a viable solution to the Army’s sometimes toxic leadership problem. The research question this paper asks is: is servant leadership a viable option for official U.S. Army leadership doctrine? We build the case that while servant leadership is fundamentally incompatible with Army Leadership and is not a viable option for official U.S. Army leadership doctrine, some of the basic tenets of servant leadership are adoptable and adaptable by the U.S. Army. Furthermore, we recommend that the U.S. Army focus on better communicating their existing leadership doctrine throughout the organization rather than …
Exploring The Effect Of Transformational Leadership On Nonprofit Leader Commitment, Robert Freeborough
Exploring The Effect Of Transformational Leadership On Nonprofit Leader Commitment, Robert Freeborough
Servant Leadership: Theory & Practice
Transformational leadership has been widely researched in for-profit organizations; however, it lacks empirical support among nonprofit organizations (Palumbo, 2016; Riggio, Bass, & Orr, 2003), as does servant leadership theory. The intent of this study was to extend previous research on transformational leadership and employee engagement and to determine whether nonprofit employees are more committed in organizations in which transformational leadership is the primary leadership style and encourage similar research on servant leadership in nonprofit organizational settings. Drawing from a survey of 389 nonprofit employees in the United States, correlational analysis found that transformational leadership significantly linked to one of the …

Exploring Servant Leadership In A Top-Down Environment, Roosevelt Mareus, Kathleen Patterson, Steve Firestone, Bruce E. Winston
Servant Leadership: Theory & Practice
This study used both Greenleaf's (1977) theory of servant leadership and Spears’s (1995) ten characteristics of servant leadership to explore the concept in a top-down environment. The study proposed to answer the research question: To what extent, if any, is a mayor of a metropolitan area in the Northeast region of the USA displaying at work the ten characteristics of servant leadership as defined by Spears? This study used an exploratory single-case study design and purposeful sampling techniques. The methodology consisted of in-depth, semistructured, open-ended interview with leaders from the community and employees from each of the various departments throughout …

Servant Leadership: Theory & Practice
This study examined the possible influence of servant leadership in NCAA Division III intercollegiate athletics. Using a survey research design, 326 athletic department employees were asked to provide their perceptions of their athletic directors’ servant leadership characteristics and respond to questions on trust in leader, turnover intentions, and job satisfaction. Results from structural equation modeling suggested servant-leaders significantly and positively impacted perceptions of trust in leader and job satisfaction. Additionally, there was a significant effect of perceptions of servant leadership on turnover intentions as mediated by job satisfaction. Sport leaders taking a servant leadership approach in their organizations could help …
