An Examination Of Nba Mvp Voting Behavior: Does Race Matter?, B. Jay Coleman, J Michael Dumond, Allen K. Lynch

The selection process of the most valuable player (MVP) in the National Basketball Association (NBA) was recently questioned as to whether African-American players were treated unfairly based on their race. Using NBA voting data from the 1995-2005 seasons, we develop two empirical models in order to examine the role that a player’s race plays in the determination of this award. Our estimates imply that after controlling for player, team, and market characteristics, there is no statistically significant effect of race on the likelihood that a player will appear on an MVP ballot or on the number of votes he will …
Corporate Citizenship And Community Stakeholders, Robert A. Phillips, R. Edward Freeman
Corporate Citizenship And Community Stakeholders, Robert A. Phillips, R. Edward Freeman

Stipulating that work on corporate citizenship is intended to add to the conversation around the role of business in society, it is reasonable to assume that scholars adopting (and adapting) the language of corporate citizenship find something there that allows for better description, analysis and synthesis of this role. Though what 'better' may mean here remains an open question, a sensible place to begin considering the question is to compare and contrast corporate citizenship with more established ways of conceiving business's role in society such as, in the case of this chapter, stakeholder theory.

More than 10 years ago in 1997, three modeling advocates brought together their own distinct techniques to forge UML (Unified Modeling Language), and the world of modeling was forever changed (Booch, Rumbaugh, & Jacobson, 1999, 2005). The Object Management Group (OMG) immediately adopted the new language as the standard for their newly expanded object-oriented (OO) modeling scope (OMG, 2008), and the stage seemed set for a modeling explosion with UML leading the way into a brave new world of more accurate and better performing systems.

Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to examine the effects of information sharing capability on buyer-supplier relationships and firm performance. It is proposed that information sharing capability, the integration of a firm's information/decision systems and business processes with those of supply chain partners, is an antecedent of collaborative buyer-supplier relationships, defined in terms of supply chain and relationship architecture. Further, it is proposed that these relationships positively impact a firm's market and financial performance. Design/methodology/approach - This research uses multiple linear regression to analyze a set of survey data from the USA, Europe and New Zealand. Findings - …
Hybrid Data Envelopment Analysis And Simulation Methodology For Measuring Capacity Utilisation And Throughput Efficiency Of Container Terminals, Hokey Min, Byung-In Park
Hybrid Data Envelopment Analysis And Simulation Methodology For Measuring Capacity Utilisation And Throughput Efficiency Of Container Terminals, Hokey Min, Byung-In Park

As growth in international trade slowed down in the recent years, inter-modal traffic volume declined and subsequently led to reduction in demand for container services. The reduced demand in container services and the ongoing glut of container port facilities throughout the world have sparked fierce competition among international container terminals. In an effort to help the port authorities to develop a winning strategy in the increasingly competitive container market, this paper develops a meaningful set of benchmarks that will set the standard for best practices. In particular, we propose a hybrid Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA)/simulation model that is designed to …

Data Envelopment Analysis For Establishing The Financial Benchmark Of Korean Hotels, Hokey Min, Hyesung Min, Seong Jong Joo, Joungman Kim

In the wake of catastrophic natural disasters and rising threats of terrorism, the hotel industry has seen a decline in revenue and an increase in competition. To avoid a downward spiral, the hotel industry needs to develop more competitive business strategies in order to make its operations lean and robust. These strategies may include: customer relationship management, yield management, niche marketing and continuous improvement of financial health. The success of these strategies hinges on the ability of hotel managers to assess the financial efficiency of their hotel in comparison to competition. In an effort to help hotel management enhance its …
Assuring Quality At The Source With Varying Worker Skills: Economic Justification Of The Online Repair Policy, Dooyoung Shin, Hokey Min
Assuring Quality At The Source With Varying Worker Skills: Economic Justification Of The Online Repair Policy, Dooyoung Shin, Hokey Min
Management Faculty Publications
Traditionally, quality control on an assembly line has been conducted by quality inspectors at the end of the assembly line. Defective or incomplete parts identified during the production cycle are typically transferred to a separate repair shop where such parts are reworked, retested, re-inspected or replaced. In contrast, today’s repetitive manufacturing companies have begun to delegate the power and responsibility of quality inspection and control to assembly workers on the line. This so-called online (line-stop) repair policy has been receiving increased attention from many manufacturing companies. Through a series of computational experiments, this paper examines the effectiveness of the online …
Capability Ratios: Comparison And Interpretation Of Short-Term And Overall Indices, Frank Rudisill, Lewis A. Litteral
Capability Ratios: Comparison And Interpretation Of Short-Term And Overall Indices, Frank Rudisill, Lewis A. Litteral

The ability of a process to satisfy customer requirements is frequently measured by capability indices. The use and interpretation of these capability indices are often times misguided and or misunderstood by those involved in this aspect of statistical process control. Those who monitor and control processes and/or make decisions based on the reported values of these indices need to have a clear understanding of indices that are reported by or to them. This paper addresses the particular indices of Cp and Pp which indicate the capability of the process based only on its variability and Cpk and …

[First paragraph] A review (in the pages of this journal) of a book published nearly fifty years ago may appear unusual; not unless the book has become a “classic”. Indeed, many organizational scholars (e.g, Pitelis, 2002) view it as a seminal text for the resource-based view of the firm - arguably one of the dominant theoretical perspectives in strategic management research today.

Balancing Hamiltonian And Jeffersonian Contradictions Within Organizations, Anil Nair, David Ahlstrom

This article describes how institutions get infused with competing logics and analyzes how such competing logics might aid the design of contemporary organizations. It does so by exploring the contrasting views of American founders Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson on the issues they confronted in the years leading up to and after the United States' independence from the British. Their views have had a lasting influence on the character and efficacy of the U.S. government. Although Hamilton and Jefferson contemplated issues related to the governance of the United States, the authors argue that their writings offer insights that can be …
