Strategic Nurse Allocation Policies Under Dynamic Patient Demand, Osman Tuncay Aydas
Strategic Nurse Allocation Policies Under Dynamic Patient Demand, Osman Tuncay Aydas
Theses and Dissertations
ABSTRACT
STRATEGIC NURSE ALLOCATION POLICIES UNDER DYNAMIC PATIENT DEMAND
by Osman T. Aydas
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 2017
Under the Supervision of Professor Anthony D. Ross
Several studies have shown a strong association between nurse staffing and patient outcomes. When a nursing unit is chronically short-staffed, nurses must maintain an intense pace to ensure that patients receive timely care. Over time this can result in nurse burnout, as well as dissatisfied patients and even medical errors. Improved accuracy in the allocation of nursing staff can mitigate these operational risks and improve patient outcomes. Nursing care is identified as the single …
Sea Turtles’ Home Coming: Chinese Returnees’ Returning Experiences, Longzhu Dong
Sea Turtles’ Home Coming: Chinese Returnees’ Returning Experiences, Longzhu Dong
Theses and Dissertations
Since China’s open door policy enacted in 1978, massive numbers of Chinese people have gone overseas for education or professional development. Such “brain drain” triggered China’s state level policy reform to harness these talents back home, and consequently both numbers and return rate of these returnees have been increasing over the past decade. These returnees are usually called “sea turtle” (a homonym for “returnee” in Chinese). Sea turtles are generally viewed as an asset, and even the rise of the Chinese economy has been attributed partly to their repatriation (Zweig & Han, 2011). Previous research on this special group of …

The dissertation explores several asset pricing and corporate finance related issues including mutual funds, insider trading and institutional investors. My first essay examines risk taking and performance of bond mutual funds. The second essay investigates insider trading, informativeness and price efficiency around the world. The third essay explores whether firms benefit from scale of their nearby institutions in terms of stock prices and corporate policies.
In the first essay, we investigates the risk exposures of bond mutual funds and how risk-taking behavior affects bond fund performance. Bond mutual funds often outperform their respective benchmark bond indexes, but underperform after adjusting …
An Investigation Of Online Navigation Patterns Of Consumers Across Cultures, Kamlesh Tiwari
An Investigation Of Online Navigation Patterns Of Consumers Across Cultures, Kamlesh Tiwari
Theses and Dissertations
Researchers have been interested in understanding the online purchase intentions of consumers. It’s interesting to see why consumers differ in the way they navigate the Internet. However, it’s still not very well explored as to what role a country's cultural variables play in online purchase behavior of its users. The goal of this dissertation is to identify the determinant variables of online buying behavior of users from different cultural environments. Hofstede's cultural dimensions are used to understand some of the differences. This study also conceptualizes attitudes toward search on mobile devices vs. desktops. The search behavior on mobile devices is …
Three Essays On International Credit Market And Monetary Policy, Anni Huang
Three Essays On International Credit Market And Monetary Policy, Anni Huang
Theses and Dissertations
My dissertation studies the behavior of international credit flow and the associated monetary policy spillover effect. In the first chapter, I am interested in decomposing the long-run variations and the short-run variations of US dollar denominated credit in emerging market economies. This paper uses a multivariate correlated unobserved component model to study the dynamic relationship among dollar credit in emerging market economies, US interest rates and the dollar index. The results from this model suggest that the transitory shocks to dollar credit in emerging market economies are highly negatively correlated with the transitory shocks to the US interest rate and …

A Model Of Women Entrepreneurs' Well-Being, Dianne Deborah Murphy
A Model Of Women Entrepreneurs' Well-Being, Dianne Deborah Murphy
Theses and Dissertations
There has been a recent surge in the growth of women entrepreneurs and particularly minority women entrepreneurs in the United States. Women owned businesses play a key role in the United States economy – they are almost 10 million in number and represent over 35% of the total number of firms (U.S. Census, 2012). As the role of women entrepreneurs, and particularly, minority women entrepreneurs, in the U.S. grows, the need to understand this group becomes ever more important. Traditionally, the entrepreneurship literature has assumed the masculine perspective, with much of the foundational theories built upon research based on male …
Facility Location Decision For Global Entrepreneurial Small-To-Medium Enterprises Using Similarity Coefficient-Based Clustering Algorithms, Suhail H. Serbaya
Facility Location Decision For Global Entrepreneurial Small-To-Medium Enterprises Using Similarity Coefficient-Based Clustering Algorithms, Suhail H. Serbaya
Theses and Dissertations
Decisions on location selection are critical for the survival of small-to-medium entrepreneurial organizations from the time they are established until later stages of operation and expansion. The selection of location for small and medium entrepreneurial businesses requires a selection strategy that incorporates relevant factors, quantifies these factors and develops a methodology that analyzes data for better decision-making. In the era of globalization where borders have become easier to transcend, many small ventures tend to choose more attractive international markets as a potential location for their operations where they can obtain higher returns on their investment. Thus, significant changes in the …
