The 2021 production season left many producers disappointed. While sap flow volume was reported as average to normal in many instances, pervasive low sap sugar content influenced the lower syrup production totals.
The 2021 Northeast Maple Business Benchmark report documents the ninth year of financial record analysis for commercial syrup producers. The project includes maple producers in Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts. Tap counts for this year’s participant businesses ranged from 7,000 taps to 65,000 taps.
This report demonstrates key management and financial metrics including: yield statistics, land use, operating costs, investment requirements, total cost of production, marketing strategy …

Valuation Of Soil Health Ecosystem Services. Vermont Payment For Ecosystem Services Technical Research Report #5, Benjamin Timothy Dube, Alissa C. White, Taylor H. Ricketts, Heather M. Darby
UVM Extension Faculty Publications
In this report, we present estimates for ecosystem services from soil health using two approaches for four different services. One approach generates estimates based on soil-health practices, and the other approach is based on improvements in soil-health indicators. For soil- health practices, such as adopting best-management practices on annual corn, we utilize a set of off-the shelf empirical models widely used to estimate ecological functions on farm landscapes. For soil-health indicators, we make estimates by linking these tools with soil data and statistical models describing how soil-health parameters influence the interaction of soils with water and their environment. We provide …

The 2020 production season began just as the Covid-19 pandemic was emerging across the United States. Most states quickly enacted “essential industry” provisions that enabled agricultural and forestry operations to remain active assuming their workers were healthy and willing to report to work. Lingering policy and regulatory issues faced maple producers in the coming months as the pandemic disruptions continued. While many businesses faced short term cash flow challenges the overall maple demand rebounded and exceeded expectations for growth by the end of 2020.
The 2020 Northeast Maple Business Benchmark report documents the eight year of financial record analysis for …

Conservation And Farm Viability On Vermont Medium And Large Farms, Mark P. Cannella, Anthony Kitsos
UVM Extension Faculty Publications
In winter 2021 a survey of Medium Farm Operations (MFO) and Large Farm Operations (LFO) was conducted in Vermont. The goal of this survey was to gather information on the economic situation across Vermont’s medium-to-larger farms, explore their adaptation to water quality regulations and to understand the next steps for farms moving forward. The survey was distributed to 143 MFO and LFO farm business owners through postal mail. Sixty-two useable surveys were analyzed resulting in a 44% response rate.
Results show that conservation practice adoption among MFO and LFO farms is high. The largest compliance factor this group of farms …

2019 Northeast Maple Business Benchmark, Mark Cannella, Christopher Lindgren
UVM Extension Faculty Publications
The 2019 production season rebounded with a 1% increase in US national syrup production from the previous crop in 2018. Bulk market prices continued a slow decline following reports of a strong 2019 crop year and continued strength of the US dollar.
General reports from maple producers and sellers indicate an environment of increasing competition for sales. Successive strong crop years bolstering supply, downward price pressure from Canadian import dynamics and more US producers pursuing direct and wholesale market channels reinforced the increased competition. By 2019 the signals to maple owners were clear, business performance in the modern maple era …

Results show that small farms made many conservation improvements to attain compliance new regulations. Lower cost investments in …
Measuring The Implementation Fidelty Of Usa Hockey’S American Development Model, Leon Lifschutz
Measuring The Implementation Fidelty Of Usa Hockey’S American Development Model, Leon Lifschutz
Graduate College Dissertations and Theses
Critics of youth sports in the United States have lamented a system that creates issues of access and could be detrimental to the physical and mental health of its young participants. In response to these concerns, USA Hockey, using Long Term Athlete Development Theory (LTAD) as a key theoretical framework, created the American Development Model (ADM) to improve the delivery of youth hockey in the US. While USA Hockey has invested greatly in bringing ADM to scale across its constituents, it is not known to what extent the model is being implemented in its member organizations. Implementation fidelity of a …

The 2017 season followed the record-breaking crop of 2016. As the 2017 season approached, business owners remained apprehensive about bulk market prices. Rumors of strong crop inventories paired with softening prices continued to concern producers. The US tap count continues to grow but at a slightly slower rate than previous years. The most current maple statistics are available from the United States Department of Agriculture National Agricultural Statistics Service (USDA NASS).
The 2017 Maple Business Benchmark is the fifth year of financial record analysis for a small group of commercial syrup producers. This report demonstrates key management and financial metrics …

At the time of this report (January 2018) market prices have dropped to near $2.00 per pound for bulk syrup and organic premiums have declined modestly. The current US bulk market prices have de-coupled from an exact calculation of the Federation of Quebec Maple Syrup Producers (FPAQ) pricing levels adjusted for US-Canadian currency exchange rates. Several public presentations from industry leaders at VT Maple Conferences have confirmed that markets continue to grow but that there is short term surplus syrup inventory following strong 2016 and 2017 crop years. This market situation continues to prompt dialogue about the industry outlook, policy …

Inclusive Fundraising: Strategies To Qualify, Cultivate, Solicit, And Steward Alumnx Of Color, Brandon Majmudar
The Vermont Connection
Support from alumnx of color is increasingly important to universities due to loftier capital campaigns goal, and ever-increasing university tuition. Analyzing literature on giving patterns of multiple communities of color themes emerge on why alumnx of color do not give back to their alma maters. The issues of alumnx invisibility, trust and tangibility, and the importance of community are central among communities of color and what often inform their desire to donate. When these areas of focus are given the proper attention, universities can change how alumnx of color view the university and increase the significant gift potential of alumnx …
Labor On Vermont Dairy Farms: A Producer Perspective, Emily Irwin
Labor On Vermont Dairy Farms: A Producer Perspective, Emily Irwin
Graduate College Dissertations and Theses
To compete with larger, more efficient dairy farms, build resilience against increasingly volatile milk prices, and increase farm income, farms in traditional dairy states such as New York, Wisconsin, and Vermont, have been forced to expand their herds and increase production. Many dairy farmers do not have formal training in human resources management, and find the transition to a larger, non-family workforce to be challenging. In addition, farmers who have transitioned to a primarily Latinx workforce also face considerable cultural and language barriers. The quality of human resource management can have a significant impact on a farm business, and evidence …

Do Labels Make A Difference: Estimating The Impacts Of Vermont’S Gmo Labeling Law On Perceptions And Prices, Orest V. Pazuniak
Graduate College Dissertations and Theses
Vermont is the first and only state in the US to establish mandatory labels for food containing genetically modified organisms (GMOs). This thesis investigates the impact of the mandatory labeling law as it relates to changes in prices, quantities sold, and opinions of GMOs. First, grocery store scanner data from Vermont and Oregon are compared using triple difference (difference-in-difference-in-difference) models. Next, Vermont, Oregon, and Colorado survey response data are compared using difference-in-difference models. The findings reveal that there is a general price premium for non-GMO goods of $0.05/oz across all states and times, that mandatory labeling laws do not result …

Hiding In Plain Sight: How Binary Gender Assumptions Complicate Efforts To Meet Transgender Students' Name And Pronoun Needs, Dot Brauer
Graduate College Dissertations and Theses
Existing literature about transgender college students calls upon higher education organizations to support trans students' use of self-identified first names (in place of legal names, given at birth) and self-identified pronouns (in place of assumed pronouns based on sex assigned at birth, or other's perceptions of physical appearance), but that literature lacks guidance on how to achieve this work, which is deceptively complex. This study addressed this gap in the literature in two ways. First by using critical theory to show how hegemonic, binary notions of gender shape intellectual, social, and regulatory dimensions of higher education in ways that complicate …
Nonprofit Social Enterprise: Social Change In A New Economic Paradigm, Cyrus O. Patten
Nonprofit Social Enterprise: Social Change In A New Economic Paradigm, Cyrus O. Patten
Graduate College Dissertations and Theses
Changes are afoot in the nonprofit sector of the economy (James, 2003). Nonprofit leaders are adopting entrepreneurial business models to sustain or expand the scope of their mission work. This change is part of a counter-hegemonic shift toward a new economic paradigm in which blended business models create both social and financial value (Sabeti, 2009; Sahakian & Dunand, 2013). The current study explored how nonprofit leaders understand the shift toward a more enterprising and entrepreneurial nonprofit sector. Qualitative methods, along with a grounded theory framework were used to elicit leaders' perspectives on the emergence of social enterprise in nonprofits and …

2014 Maple Business Benchmark, Mark Cannella, Christopher Lindgren, Betsy Miller
UVM Extension Faculty Publications
Maple producers experienced record crop yields matched with sustained strong prices in the 2013 sugaring season. Moving into the 2014 sugaring season producers were aware of slight price declines in the forecast. While producers were still hopeful for a strong sugaring season many managers were concerned that too large of a crop might overwhelm the overall syrup supply and accelerate the price drops (it was not until later in 2014 that producers learn that market price declines would be primarily driven by the Canadian/US currency exchange rates).
The University of Vermont Extension worked with 18 maple producers to complete financial …

Accessing Reliable Health Information On The Internet, Nathaniel Sugiyama ,Ms3
Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects
In a low socioeconomic farming town at a rural family medicine clinic in upstate NY, I wanted to find a way to help reduce barriers to healthcare and help patients take an active role in their health using free internet resources. My idea was to help connect patients with reliable health information without needing to travel to the clinic, understanding that some patients may be limited in their ability to travel, take time off from work or afford the copays/expenses associated with seeing their providers. As such, I chose to investigate access to the internet, the ways in which users …

Psychotherapists Becoming Leadership Consultants: The Making Of An Institutional Entrepreneur, Mercy Burton Russell
Graduate College Dissertations and Theses
ABSTRACT
Leadership consultants bring specialized knowledge into their clients'
organizations. Advisor leadership consultants (ALC) trained as psychotherapists
apply concepts from human behavior theories as advisors to business leaders. They
also bring service-oriented professional norms and values of objectivity, neutrality,
and lack of self-interest. Their business clients in the market sector operate
according to norms and values of pragmatism, financial self-interest, and advocacy.
In order to establish credibility in the organizational field of business clients,
leadership consultants must negotiate between these different value systems.
This study is a grounded theory inquiry using narrative analysis tools to
study how ALCs navigate across …

Managing The Wilderness Experience At Olympic National Park: A Study Of Day And Overnight Visitors, Warren Vinson Pierce, Iii.
Graduate College Dissertations and Theses
As the United States becomes increasingly urbanized, the importance of federally designated wilderness areas as places of reflection and refuge from city life becomes even more apparent. These wilderness areas provide visitors with opportunities for solitude, recreation, and connecting with nature. Wilderness has long been important to American society, influencing the likes of John Muir, Theodore Roosevelt, and Henry David Thoreau. With the passage of the Wilderness Act of 1964, the assurance that these areas would remain protected in perpetuity for the enjoyment of the American people was enshrined into law. While these wilderness areas remain protected by Federal law, …
Mothers' Perceptions Of Workplace Breastfeeding Support, Katrina Marie Russo Burks
Mothers' Perceptions Of Workplace Breastfeeding Support, Katrina Marie Russo Burks
Graduate College Dissertations and Theses
Despite substantial evidence that breastfeeding is the optimal way to feed the healthy, full-term infant, data show that, although most mothers in the United States start out breastfeeding their infants, there are often barriers to continued breastfeeding beyond the first few weeks or months. Among the reasons cited are lack of support and the need to return to full or part time paid employment. As a result of the Surgeon General's 2011 Call to Action to Support Breastfeeding, many initiatives have been implemented on national, state, and local levels to improve support for breastfeeding in the workplace. The purpose of …
Early Adoption Dynamics Of Private Sustainability Governance Initiatives: A Case Study Of The Marine Cultured-Pearl Industry, Julie Nash
Graduate College Dissertations and Theses
We are witnessing a time of unprecedented human impact on the natural environment. Coral reefs, one of the most biologically diverse and productive ecosystems, are at the forefront of enduring these human impacts. Despite widespread recognition of coral reef degradation, counter measures have not reached a scale to offset the threat. The magnitude of this and other environmental issues call for a deeper understanding of the role the private sector can play in sustainable development.
In response to environmental pressures and the shortcomings of global-scale governance, private sustainability governance initiatives have developed. In the last decade, these initiatives have flourished, …

Discourse As Social Process In Outdoor Recreation And Natural Resource Management: Arguing, Constructing, And Performing, Monika Marie Derrien
Graduate College Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation examines the language-based, discursive processes through which meanings and experiences are socially constituted in outdoor recreation and natural resource environments. Language use and discourse are seen as interactive, constructive processes, approached through the theoretical perspectives of argumentation, social constructionism, and performance.
Three qualitative studies, based in data collected at Acadia National Park and forest-related sites throughout Vermont, comprise this dissertation. The first study uses rhetorical analysis to examine the ways National Park Service managers and community leaders argue for the meanings and management of dark night skies in and around Acadia. The second study examines how national park …

Farmers In Vermont's Artisanal Cheese Industry: Examining What Influences Dairy Farm Management, Katrina Light
Food Systems Master's Project Reports
Vermont is home to approximately 61 licensed cheese producers, who create over 150 varieties of cheese using the milk from cows, goats, and sheep (Vermont Agency of Agriculture Food & Markets 2013).1 Vermont cheese production ranges in size from a four cattle “farmstead operation” that creates a traditionally produced “artisan” cheese to a large dairy company that creates industrially produced cheese for a domestic and international market.
Artisan or artisanal designation signifies that the cheese is produced in part by hand, in small batches, and made using traditional forms of craftsmanship and technique. Farmstead cheese means the cheese is made …

Social Responsibility And Succession Planning: A Qualitative Application Of The Theory Of Planned Behavior Among Small Businesses In Vermont, Alana Marie Izzo
Graduate College Dissertations and Theses
Small businesses are critically important to the current U.S. economy. This is especially true for Vermont. In 2010, small Vermont businesses represented 96.3% of all employers accounting for approximately 60% of the private sector workforce (SBA, 2013). Entrepreneurs are drawn to Vermont for the quality of life, progressive atmosphere, and its distinction for fostering companies with socially, ethically and environmentally driven missions. Succession is an important stage in a company's life-cycle. Thus, succession planning is a crucial activity for founders, owners or high-level managers, (here after referred to as leaders,) in which to participate. This study explores the current environment …
