Greening of computing processes is an environmental strategy gaining momentum in the 21st century as evidenced by increased virtual communications. Because of the rising cost of fuel to travel to meetings and conferences, corporations are adopting sophisticated technologies that provide a “personal” experience for geographically disbursed colleagues to interact in real time. This article highlights several companies and academic professional organizations that utilize video conferencing, virtual classrooms, and virtual worlds to create digital spaces for collaboration. The article compares the impact of face-to-face collaboration that includes business travel expenses to the impact of the same activity in a virtual space. …

The UMass Amherst Campus Master Plan Sustainability Chapter articulates the manner in which the Campus Master Plan 2012 principles translate into specific recommendations for campus systems development in support of future smart growth. It summarizes the current physical campus-scale planning projects that Facilities & Campus Services have completed during and after the Master Plan process, and incorporates other operational and educational initiatives that have engaged our campus community as we plan for sustainability. The CMP Chapter is organized in three major sections: i) sustainability overview; ii) campus master plan systems; iii) current initiatives; and iv) next steps. The first section …
Defining Your Own Sustainable Future, Jacob Johnsen
Defining Your Own Sustainable Future, Jacob Johnsen
Jacob Johnsen, MSc
How do you create – and maintain – an attractive service portfolio, and how to compete in a shifting environment? In our changing world, survival is not a question of size, speed or coverage. You must be adaptive. Posts can find out where to adapt, by examining the changes in customer behaviour, changing demands and technological achievements. Volumes are shifting from letters to packets, and so far, courier companies have taken market share from posts. Jacob Johnsen looks at the current changes and gives some guidelines on how to set up pointers for an ever-changing direction.

A Historical Perspective Of The Evolution Of Australian Built Heritage And Its Management, Johari Hussein, Lynne Armitage, Linda Too
Lynne Armitage
This paper analyses the origin and parameters that contribute to the development of Australian built heritage, identifies the underlying challenges and issues that stakeholders face in their management, and thereby develops a basis for further research. A literature review was conducted on published resources related to heritage buildings in an historical context to categorise contributory parameters that have shaped Australian built environment over the past two centuries. It is perceived by researchers that modernisation, sustainability and technology are factors that help to retain built heritage values. However, this review suggests that the way in which these factors are applied often …

Supply Chain Sustainability: The Bio-Fuels Market, Chris D. Bellamy
Dr. Chris D. Bellamy
Research into biofuel technology and innovative supply chain practices are helping to resolve sustainability problems in supply logistics and mass transportation. Biofuels provide a viable alternative to the use of fossil fuels and can be produced and replenished because the fuel is from plants and plant derived materials. Applications in aerospace, automotive, and electrical power production are the prime targets of biofuels development; the fuels have applications in many industries around the world. Global supply chain practices provide sustainable development of bio fuels storage, transportation, agriculture, and other industries. All of these industries require partnerships between unlikely stakeholders such as …

While the United Nations Principles of Responsible Management Education (PRME) is a very positive development in the horizon of management education over the last decade, there are still many significant challenges for engaging the mind of the manager in ways that will foster the values of PRME and the UN Global Compact. Responsible management education must address three foundational challenges in business education if it is to actualize the aspirations of PRME: 1) it must confront the cognitional myth that knowing is like looking, 2) it must move beyond mere analysis to systems thinking, and 3) it must transition from …

The Emergence Of A Standards Market: Multiplicity Of Sustainability Standards In The Global Coffee Industry, Juliane Reinecke, Stephan Manning, Oliver Von Hagen

The growing number of voluntary standards for governing transnational arenas is presenting standards organizations with a problem. While claiming that they are pursuing shared, overarching objectives, at the same time, they are promoting their own respective standards that are increasingly similar. By developing the notion of ‘standards markets,’ this paper examines this tension and studies how different social movement and industry-driven standards organizations compete as well as collaborate over governance in transnational arenas. Based on an in-depth case study of sustainability standards in the global coffee industry, we find that the ongoing co-existence of multiple standards is being promoted by …
Sustainability At Home: Policy Measures For Energy-Efficient Appliances, Geoff Kelly
Sustainability At Home: Policy Measures For Energy-Efficient Appliances, Geoff Kelly
Geoff Kelly
Residential energy consumption is now an important component of total energy consumption and its related emissions. In addition, this consumption has significant potential for growth in both developed and developing countries, as average incomes increase, and domestic appliance numbers rise. Reduction in this energy use may be achieved both through conservation measures, and through increased efficiency in its use. This paper focuses on energy efficiency in appliances-those many devices through which household energy is consumed. The policy instruments available to promote the uptake of more efficient devices, and issues associated with their use, are reviewed, drawing on developed country experiences to …

A Quality Metric For Sustainable Innovations, Arcot Desai Narasimhalu
Arcot Desai NARASIMHALU
Sustainability has become a major concern for nations and firms especially since the Kyoto Protocol was defined in 1997. While there have been several studies on benchmarks for national innovation systems and effectiveness of innovation management within firms there is as yet no reasonable metric for determining the quality of an innovation much less its quality relating to sustainability? Similarly, there have been several studies on sustainability but that such research groups have also not focused on developing a metric for denoting the quality of sustainable innovations. This paper offers a metric that defines the quality of an innovation, especially …

This paper draws attention to the growing interest in social innovations as they seek to improve the well being of people, communities and society. Social innovations are recognised as the development of new concepts, strategies and tools that support individuals and groups to achieve improved well-being. We examine here the growing interest in social innovation before turning our attention to more theoretical and conceptual concerns. We examine the link between the social and technical dimensions of innovation and identify how the scope of our definition is important in delineating our phenomena of interest. Some of the earlier academic work on …

The ranking are justified with reference to the research articles.
Integrity For The Common Good: The Missing Link Between Neo-Liberalists And The ‘Occupy’ Discontents, Marco Tavanti
Integrity For The Common Good: The Missing Link Between Neo-Liberalists And The ‘Occupy’ Discontents, Marco Tavanti
Marco Tavanti
This study analyzes the differences between the neoliberalist and the Keynesian perspectives used in the debates emerged from the current economic crisis. The common good ethics is presented as a paradigm for recuperating the social, human and moral responsibilities of economic development. The assumption is that neoliberal economic models have produced prosperity but also technocracy, inequality and discontent. Through the examination of the principles of solidarity, subsidiarity, sustainability and synchronicity used in Catholic Social Teaching, the author introduces an integrated model for ethical decision-making beyond ideological divisions and for the common good.
