Technical Note: Comparative Static Analysis Of Information Value In A Canonical Decision Problem, Jeffrey Keisler Sep 2004

Technical Note: Comparative Static Analysis Of Information Value In A Canonical Decision Problem, Jeffrey Keisler

Jeffrey Keisler

To gain insight into the behavior of the value of information, this paper identifies specific rules for a canonical decision problem: the two-act linear loss decision with normal prior probability distributions. Conditions are derived for which the expected value of perfect information increases when mean and standard deviation are both linear functions of an exogenous variable. A variety of richer decision problems can be adapted to the problem, so that the general results obtained here can be immediately applied to understand drivers of information value.

Allocating Contractor Risks In The Hanford Waste Cleanup, Jeffrey M. Keisler, William A. Buehring, Peter D. Mclaughlin, Mark A. Robershotte, Ronald G. Whitfield

Jeffrey Keisler

Organizations may view outsourcing as a way to manage risk. We developed a decision-analytic approach to determine which risks the buyer can share or shift to vendors and which ones it should bear. We found that allocating risks incorrectly could increase costs dramatically. Between 1995 and 1998, we used this approach to develop the request for proposals (RFP) for the US Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) privatization initiative for the Hanford tank waste remediation system (TWRS). In the model, we used an assessment protocol to predict how vendors would react to proposed risk allocations in terms of their actions and their …

Restructuring The Region : The Evolution Of The Optics And Imaging Industry In Rochester, Ny, Jennifer Clark Apr 2004

Restructuring The Region : The Evolution Of The Optics And Imaging Industry In Rochester, Ny, Jennifer Clark

Jennifer Clark

Through a case study of Rochester, New York's optics and imaging industry my dissertation examines regional sector specialization and firm labor market strategies deployed to retain corporate competitiveness. Using industry and occupational analysis as well as interviews, focus groups, and survey techniques, I investigate how labor markets and labor market institutions remake themselves in response to the systematic dismantling of the model of corporate paternalism that was once pervasive in the Rochester region. I argue that there is a contradiction between the need for firm specific skills and the desire for a flexible employment relationship that creates an increased dependence …

A Resource Granularity Framework For Estimating Opportunity Costs, Shyam Sunder Jan 2004

A Resource Granularity Framework For Estimating Opportunity Costs, Shyam Sunder

Shyam Sunder

This paper presents a framework to help decisions makers better measure the opportunity cost of resources with differing economic characteristics. After characterizing resources by the intrinsic lumpiness of acquisition (acquisition granularity), storability of benefits (expiration granularity), and control over the rate of consumption of available benefits (consumption granularity), this paper illustrates how these concepts can lead to improved decisions and assessment of observed practices.

Islamic Economics: A Solution For Enviornmental Protection, Saeed Mortazavi Dec 2003

Islamic Economics: A Solution For Enviornmental Protection, Saeed Mortazavi

Saeed Mortazavi

Concern over the tragedy of the commons emanates from the fact that Western economics has become a discipline devoid of values.  Exploitation of the natural environment can be abated when individuals consider intergenerational welfare and justice to be important factors in their economic decisions.  Islamic economics, unlike its Western counterpart, is a value-driven discipline replete with moral values that limits individual’s consumption, and imposes significant social and religious responsibilities on individuals as guardians of the natural environment for future generations.

Risk Sharing And The Market For Corporate Control: A Case For Golden Parachutes, Atreya Chakraborty

Atreya Chakraborty

The predictability of security returns has received considerable attention in the literature, and yet the predictability of bond returns beyond the US markets has remained far less explored. Here we plan to remedy the shortcoming, and in that effort we analyse the ability of several predetermined information variables in predicting bond returns in the European market. We test if variables, commonly used for that matter in the context of other markets (such as inverse relative wealth, term spread, real bond yield and a January dummy) are also useful predictors of European bond returns. Due to some particularities of the sample …

A Logic For Entrepreneurial Discovery., Patrick J. Murphy Dec 2003

A Logic For Entrepreneurial Discovery., Patrick J. Murphy

Patrick J. Murphy

This dissertation employs an epistemological approach to integrate several branches of social science (i.e., economics, marketing, sociology, psychology) that have contributed to the scholarly field of entrepreneurship. The integration yielded a novel theoretic framework with empirical implications for the study of the entrepreneurial opportunity recognition phenomenon. Empirical assessment of the framework revealed support for models of knowledge-based indicators as forecasters of three different forms of opportunity recognition identified in previous research and theory (i.e., idea-first, business-first, simultaneous). Marginal support was found for the same models as forecasters of the establishment of new business ventures. Ultimately, no support was found for …

Integrating Web Services With Competitive Strategies: The Balanced Scorecard Approach, C. Derrick Huang, Qing Hu Dec 2003

Integrating Web Services With Competitive Strategies: The Balanced Scorecard Approach, C. Derrick Huang, Qing Hu

Qing Hu

The significance of aligning IT with corporate strategy is widely recognized, but the lack of appropriate methodologies prevented practitioners from integrating IT projects with competitive strategies effectively. This article addresses the issue of deploying Web services strategically using the concept of a widely accepted management tool, the balanced scorecard. A framework is developed to match potential benefits of Web services with corporate strategy in four business dimensions: innovation and learning, internal business process, customer, and financial. It is argued that the strategic benefits of implementing Web services can only be realized if the Web services initiatives are planned and implemented …

Australia’S Eggleston Principles In Takeover Law: Social And Economic Sense?, Benedict Sheehy

Australia has yet to give up its distinctive approach to take-over law. Although there has been and continues to be pressure to submit to the US model, this article argues that to do so is not likely to produce the desired effect while giving up something of particular value to Australians.

How Do Value Creation And Competition Determine Whether A Firm Appropriates Value? , Michael D. Ryall, Glenn Macdonald Dec 2003

How Do Value Creation And Competition Determine Whether A Firm Appropriates Value? , Michael D. Ryall, Glenn Macdonald

Michael D Ryall

How does competition among economic actors determine the value that each is able to appropriate? We provide a formal, general framework within which this question can be posed and answered, and then provide several results. Chief among them is a condition that is both required for, and guarantees, value appropriation. We apply our methodology to (i) assess the familiar notion that uniqueness, inimitability, and competition imply value appropriation, and (ii) determine the value appropriation possibilities for an innovator whose unique discovery is of use to several others who can compete for the right to use it.
