Is There A Relationship Between The Gender Of The Ceo And Short-Termism Or Long-Termism?, Kerry Calnan
Is There A Relationship Between The Gender Of The Ceo And Short-Termism Or Long-Termism?, Kerry Calnan
Doctoral Dissertations (DBA)
Based on a panel of S&P 1500 firms from the period of 2008-2016, we evaluate whether firms managed by female CEOs exhibit the same short-termism or long-termism as firms managed by male CEOs. We evaluate in terms of market based, firm based and investment indicator. Our goal is to better understand if there is a relationship between the gender of the CEO and short-termism or long-termism.
Our results find firms with female CEOs have lower Tobin’s Q, lower ROA, however, they spend more on research and development than firms run by male CEOs.

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is a concept aimed to ensure that corporations conduct their business in an ethical manner by taking care of their environment and human resources in addition to their economic impact. Often times, CSR refers to the steps undertaken by a corporation to measure its efforts to improve the environment and social well-being. One of the aspects of CSR pertains to the disclosure of emission information and carbon management strategy (CMS). Carbon Management refers to analyzing and focusing on those areas within the corporation where cost reductions can be made via energy reductions, waste management and reduced …

The Minuses Of Plus Loans; Trends, Issues, And Opportunities For Parents Who Borrow For College, Ross A. Riskin
The Minuses Of Plus Loans; Trends, Issues, And Opportunities For Parents Who Borrow For College, Ross A. Riskin
Doctoral Dissertations (DBA)
As college costs rise, students aren’t the only ones facing the financial burden of education-related debt. In this paper, parent borrowing through the PLUS loan system, which is a federal program that provides parents and graduate students with access to funding for higher education costs, is examined. The systemic issues present in the PLUS loan system along with the rise in overall borrowing suggest the need for improved policies to help increase borrower awareness and improve loan outcomes. This paper is unique in that it addresses parent PLUS loan borrowing at the school level in order to identify factors that …

Since the introduction of the iPhone in 2007, the global retail market has witnessed massive demographic and technological changes that have re-defined consumer experience. Such changes include the rise of the millennial consumer cohort, and the introduction of retailers implementing enhanced artificial intelligence (AI) data methodology to analyse business, augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) to enhance experience and co-customization interfaces. Two seminal pieces of literature regarding consumer experience are Ballantine and Parson’s analysis of consumer experience factors and Pine and Gilmore’s (1999) Experience Economy. However, these studies were conducted nearly a decade ago, leaving a void in the …

We contribute to the research on the information content of earnings as it applies to the forecasting of economic activity across reporting models. We examine whether publicly available financial statement information is incrementally useful in forecasting confidentially reported taxable income. More precise firm-level taxable income forecasts can improve policymakers’ modeling of the tax system and their ability to analyze the effect of proposed changes in corporate tax law. When aggregated, improved micro-forecasts can also yield more accurate macro-forecasts of corporate taxable income, a significant component of the federal budget. We find that financial statement information improves firm-level estimates of future …
Improving Entrepreneurial Competencies In The Classroom: An Extension And In-Study Replication, Caroline E. W. Glackin, Steven E. Phelan
Improving Entrepreneurial Competencies In The Classroom: An Extension And In-Study Replication, Caroline E. W. Glackin, Steven E. Phelan
New England Journal of Entrepreneurship
Purpose – A recent paper by Morris et al. (2013b) presented evidence that students can develop entrepreneurial competencies through international fieldwork. This paper explores whether the same results can be developed in a traditional classroom setting. Design/methodology/approach – The study is a systematic replication of the Morris study with the addition of a matched pair, quasi-experimental design, with a self-replication. Data were collected on 13 self-reported competencies at the start of a semester from two groups using the Morris instrument. The treatment group was exposed to a curriculum designed to teach entrepreneurial competencies, and both groups were resurveyed at the …

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship
Purpose – The study aims to test the applicability of a variant of the model proposed by Hockerts (2017) for assessing the social entrepreneurial intention (SEI) of male and female students. It extends the model by incorporating the university’s environment and support system (ESS) as an additional more distal construct. The university’s ESS, coupled with the experience with social, cultural and environmental issues can affect SEI by influencing the more proximal precursors of empathy towards others, perceived self-efficacy, perceived community support and social, cultural and environmental responsibility. Design/methodology/approach – A structured non-disguised questionnaire was administered to students at a Canadian …
Gender Differences And New Venture Performance, Mayank Jaiswal
Gender Differences And New Venture Performance, Mayank Jaiswal
New England Journal of Entrepreneurship
Purpose – This study compares the performance of female majority-owned new ventures (FNV) vs. male majority-owned new ventures (MNV). It analyzes the differences in levels of variables such as education, the same industry work experience of owners, and other venture level attributes between FNVs and MNVs. More importantly, this study employs decomposition techniques to determine the individual contribution from the intergender difference of each attribute on the performance of the new venture. For example, the study finds that, on average, the owners of an MNV possessed 3.4 years more of the same industry work experience than their FNV counterparts. This …
Overconfidence: A Common Psychological Attribute Of Entrepreneurs Which Leads To Firm Failure, Robert Paul Singh
Overconfidence: A Common Psychological Attribute Of Entrepreneurs Which Leads To Firm Failure, Robert Paul Singh
New England Journal of Entrepreneurship
Purpose – There has been significant growth in entrepreneurship research over the past several decades. Yet with all of the knowledge gained and presumably improved training of would-be entrepreneurs, firm failure rates remain persistently high. It is argued here that the historical and continued research focus on successful entrepreneurs has limited the field. Entrepreneurs are often considered to possess uniquely positive capabilities relative to the general population; this paper explores the possibility that the majority of entrepreneurs suffer from overconfidence and that this leads most entrepreneurs to make “bad bets” that result in underperformance and firm failure. Design/methodology/approach – In …
Adding A Strategic Lens To Feasibility Analysis, Gregory Berry, Kareem M. Shabana
Adding A Strategic Lens To Feasibility Analysis, Gregory Berry, Kareem M. Shabana
New England Journal of Entrepreneurship
Purpose – Traditional feasibility analysis is focused on the immediate and urgent needs of a new venture start-up. All four parts of the feasibility analysis (product/service, industry/market, organizational, and financial) are valuable and essential, but what is missed is a part that provided attention to the longer-term requirements for success and sustainability. A fifth strategic feasibility analysis is needed, focused on the long-term sustainability of the new venture. This strategic/contingent context-dependency lens considers the organization’s long-term survival, confirming that organizational success depends on the new venture’s ability to emphasize its uniqueness and fit with its external environment. Design/methodology/approach – This …

It’S Who You Know That Counts: Board Connectedness And Csr Performance, Abu S. Amin, Lamia Chourou, Syed Kamal, Mahfuja Malik, Yang Zhao
WCBT Faculty Publications
Highlights:
- We examine whether and how board connections affect the firm's corporate social responsibilities (CSR).
- We find that board connectedness is positively associated with CSR performance.
- Our findings suggest firms that operate in a complex business environment or require more advising benefit more from a well-networked board.
- Firms that are poorly governed, have high stock return volatility, low market capitalization, or low institutional ownership tend to benefit more from the well-connected board when the cost of acquiring information is higher.
- In addition, we show that independent directors’ abilities to gather information and resources from their networks can facilitate the transmission …

The overall purpose of this paper is to describe and explain the strategic sponsorship program of Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria (BBVA) and, specifically, the partnership of its U.S. subsidiary, BBVA Compass (BBVAC), with the American National Basketball Association (NBA) using a case study method. This paper demonstrates how BBVA, initially through the transformational leadership of former BBVA Group Executive Chairman Francisco González, has leveraged digital transformation and strategic sponsorship to increase its brand equity and revenue. BBVA’s effective sponsorship strategy represents an innovative, agile, and digitally focused model for marketing executives and sport marketers considering a long-term investment in strategic …
The Impact Of The Introduction Of Fx Futures On The Volatility Of The Underlying Asian Emerging Market Currencies, Teresa Starzecki
The Impact Of The Introduction Of Fx Futures On The Volatility Of The Underlying Asian Emerging Market Currencies, Teresa Starzecki
Doctoral Dissertations (DBA)
This paper examines the impact of the introduction of currency futures on the volatility of four Asian emerging market currencies: Chinese yuan, Indian rupee, South Korean won, and Thai baht. A GARCH(1,1) model is implemented to measure volatility in pre- and post- futures introduction periods along with an MCMC procedure to estimate the model and test the significance in changes in volatility between the periods. We find that for three of the four currencies, the persistence and long-run mean of volatility significantly decrease after futures were introduced, while the variance of variance decreases for all four currencies. The results suggest …
