California State University, San Bernardino launched its’ first ever library laptop lending program in the fall of 2012. During research into policy creation and technical implementation questions of a more general nature emerged. Is the need for library provided laptops declining? Are library provided tablet computers such as iPads replacing laptops? Are libraries providing devices to access eBooks? This session will present two case studies at CSU, San Bernardino, and the preliminary results of a survey into digital device lending by libraries. Web content management systems (CMS) are increasingly becoming the preferred solution for library websites and intranets. This session will describe the entire process of implementing CMS; from requirements gathering to post-launch evaluation. We will take a look at several popular open source CMS, and discuss the technical requirements for hosting these systems. Project management principles will be applied to the process, and usability testing methods will be discussed as part of the design and evaluation phases.

This session presents two case studies of the use of open source content management systems (CMSs) in academic libraries. It includes an overview of the benefits and features of CMSs, demonstrates implementations of CMSs at both public sites and staff intranets, and provides a comparison of the two CMS software platforms used (Joomla and Plone) and deployment processes, detailing experiences in such areas as selecting a CMS, identifying resources for support and training, and encouraging staff adoption.
