Social Entrepreneurship In Singapore, Wee Liang Tan, Teck Meng Tan
Social Entrepreneurship In Singapore, Wee Liang Tan, Teck Meng Tan
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Social entrepreneurship is a new phenomenon in Singapore. Unlike the US, where there are entrepreneurship programs offered at various ACCSB accredited universities such programs do not as yet exist in Asia. The motivations for social entrepreneurship in Asia differ from those in developed countries. While as social entrepreneurship often stem from the social agenda of successful entrepreneurs who are motivated to repay society, the recent trend of social entrepreneurship in Asia may stem from initiatives directed at political liberalisation and the development of civil society on the part of existing governments. The Singapore government in 1997 introduced a series of …

Pb1711 Direct Marketing Guide For Producers Of Fruits, Vegetables And Other Specialty Products, The University Of Tennessee Agricultural Extension Service
Financial Management
Direct farmer-to-consumer marketing includes any method by which farmers sell their products directly to consumers. Justification for establishing a direct farmer-to-consumer marketing outlet is based primarily on the producers’ desire to increase the financial returns from farm production by (1) reducing marketing costs (and capture profits) attributed to intermediaries (middlemen) in the supply chain, and (2) capitalizing on the desire of consumers to buy (and willingness to perhaps pay a premium for) riper, fresher, higherquality fruits and vegetables. However, if growers expect to receive prices similar to those at retail outlets, they must provide the same value of services consumers …

Regional Technology Assets And Opportunities: The Geographic Clustering Of High-Tech Industry, Science And Innovation In Appalachia, Edward Feser, Harvey Goldstein, Henry Renski, Catherine Renault
Edward J Feser
This study constitutes a systematic location analysis of the technology assets of Appalachia. The report identifies and documents sub-regional concentrations of technology-related employment, R&D, and applied innovation within and immediately adjacent to the 406-county service area of the Appalachian Regional Commission. By assembling and analyzing an extensive set of data at high levels of functional and spatial detail, the study reveals localized technology strengths that might be nurtured through focused economic development policy.

National Culture And Entrepreneurship: A Review Of Behavioral Research, James C. Hayton, Gerard George, Shaker A. Zahra
National Culture And Entrepreneurship: A Review Of Behavioral Research, James C. Hayton, Gerard George, Shaker A. Zahra
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Conceptual arguments for the association between cultural characteristics and entrepreneurship have existed for decades but only in the last 10 years has this relationship been the focus of empirical scrutiny. In this article, we review and synthesize the findings of 21 empirical studies that examine the association between national cultural characteristics and aggregate measures of entrepreneurship, individual characteristics of entrepreneurs, and aspects of corporate entrepreneurship. The study concedes that a predominant number of empirical studies have used Hofstede's conceptualization of national culture and that other domains have been underdeveloped. A preliminary model that integrates past findings is extended. The review …

An Exploratory Analysis Of The Impacts Of Acquisition Reform Initiatives On Small Business Participation In The Aerospace Industry, Bruce J. Miller
An Exploratory Analysis Of The Impacts Of Acquisition Reform Initiatives On Small Business Participation In The Aerospace Industry, Bruce J. Miller
Theses and Dissertations
The United States Government is a major purchaser of goods and services within the nation and overseas. In addition to having the responsibility of acquiring goods and services for the direct benefit of the Government at a price, level of quality, timeliness and other terms and conditions that reflect the best value to the nation, the persons involved in procurement for the Government must also do so in way that reflects certain socio-economic goals set forth by the Congress. The Small Business Act (15 USC 637, Public Law 85-536 (1958) established the beginnings of a program to assist domestic small …

Ethnic Entrepreneurship: Do Values Matter?, Mike Morris, Minet Schindehutte, Jack Lesser
New England Journal of Entrepreneurship
While considerable attention has been devoted to the personality traits of entrepreneurs, less attention has been given to their values, especially outside of a Western context. Values are instrumental in the decision to pursue entrepreneurship, and have implications for the entrepreneur’s approach to creating and managing the venture. The role of values would seem especially relevant in the context of ethnic subcultures. Values traditionally associated with entrepreneurship, such as risk, individualism, competitiveness, wealth generation, and growth, may be more consistent with Western cultures, and may conflict with closely held values within various ethnic subcultures the world over. This article examines …
Adequacy Of The 1995 Antitrust Guidelines For The Licensing Of Intellectual Property In Complex High Tech Markets, Clovia Hamilton
Adequacy Of The 1995 Antitrust Guidelines For The Licensing Of Intellectual Property In Complex High Tech Markets, Clovia Hamilton
Winthrop Faculty and Staff Publications
In 1995, the Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission adopted new guidelines for those wishing to license intellectual property rights without violating antitrust laws. Designed to provide clarity, these guidelines instead breed confusion because they misunderstand the nature of intellectual property markets and provide insufficient guidance in the most difficult areas. Section I of this article will discuss the basic provisions of the guidelines, especially their treatment of "innovation markets." It argues that government enforcers should focus primarily on activity that creates entry barriers. Understanding the use and misuse of licensing is the key to analyzing barriers in …
Innovations In Competitive Manufacturing, Paul Swamidass
Innovations In Competitive Manufacturing, Paul Swamidass
Paul Swamidass
Competitive manufacturing in the US was made possible by the progress made in a number of areas. For example, progress in competitive manufacturing is attributable to advances in the strategic use if manufacturing, cellular manufacturing, lean manufacturing, flexible automation, total quality management, supply chain management, design for manufacturing, mass customization, improved costing, and so on.
Pressured by competition, US manufacturers began the journey to competitive manufacturing in the late seventies; their success brought revolutionary changes to US manufacturing.
The book is arranged in 13 different chapters, each covering a major subject within manufacturing management. Each chapter consists of one or …

MBA Faculty Conference Papers & Journal Articles
The usefulness of any research is dependent upon how well the group studied represents the group about which decisions are to be made or conclusions drawn. That is, it depends upon how well the sample reflects relevant characteristics of the population. When it is possible to study every member of that group there is no problem, for on these occasions we can easily calculate the exact attribute (parameter) of interest for our population.
For example, if we were interested in determining the average number of gallons of gasoline sold to customers at our service station yesterday, we …

Entrepreneurial Women And Life Expectancy, Jeannette Oppedisano, Sandra Lueder
New England Journal of Entrepreneurship
This article explores whether the longevity phenomenon experienced by entrepreneurial women born between 1720 and 1940 can be explained by the life circumstances of these women or whether other research may provide better insights into their remarkable tenacity. The characteristics of hardiness, resiliency, and self-efficacy should be examined as well as the newly developing research theories of perseverance in the face of adversity to determine which are most appropriate in explaining what is clearly female entrepreneurial endurance.

Factors that contribute to women launching their own business and satisfaction levels of women entrepreneurs are examined. Survey responses from 94 respondents are obtained from women entrepreneurs in Florida. An ANOVA was used to compare sample means between the demographics and the independent variables. Aligning with values, regaining excitement, being in charge, advancing myself, fulfilling life-long goal and balancing family and friends contribute to reasons why women launch their own business. Regression analyses were also conducted where being in charge, fulfilling a life-long goal, and balancing family and work contribute 41% of the variance of the dependent variable regaining excitement. …

Someone Old Or Someone New? The Effects Of Ceo Change On Corporate Entrepreneurship, J. L. "Bert" Morrow Jr.
Someone Old Or Someone New? The Effects Of Ceo Change On Corporate Entrepreneurship, J. L. "Bert" Morrow Jr.
New England Journal of Entrepreneurship
Boards of directors often attempt to foster corporate entrepreneurship by replacing a firm’s chief executive officer (CEO). Compelling theoretical arguments and anecdotal evidence suggest that when firm performance has suffered, a new CEO is best suited to lead the firm’s creative endeavors. On the other hand, among firms that retain their existing CEO after a decline in performance, manipulating the CEO’s compensation package is a common governance practice used by boards to encourage innovation. In these cases, some have argued that increasing the CEO’s pay will encourage corporate entrepreneurship, because the CEO has been compensated for assuming additional risk. Counter …
Using Social Cognitive Career Theory To Predict Self-Employment Goals, Gerald Segal, Dan Borgia, Jerry Schoenfeld
Using Social Cognitive Career Theory To Predict Self-Employment Goals, Gerald Segal, Dan Borgia, Jerry Schoenfeld
New England Journal of Entrepreneurship
Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT; Lent, Brown, and Hackett 1994, 1996) proposes that career interests, goals, and choices are related to self-efficacy beliefs and outcome expectations. It suggests that people’s self-efficacy beliefs and outcome expectations with regard to self-employment would predict their goals to become self-employed. This study explores the ability of SCCT to predict goals for self-employment in a sample of 115 undergraduate business students. Results indicated that students with higher entrepreneurial self-efficacy and higher self-employment outcome expectations had higher intentions to become self-employed. These findings imply that educators and policy-makers may boost student entrepreneurial intentions by (1) enhancing …
A Profile Of The Home-Based Business Sector Within The City Of Swan, Beth Walker
A Profile Of The Home-Based Business Sector Within The City Of Swan, Beth Walker
Research outputs pre 2011
Home-based businesses are the single biggest business cohort in Australia, accounting for 67% of all small businesses and 58% of all businesses [1]. Home-based businesses are not a new phenomenon but what is precipitating the current interest in this cohort is the duel factors of emerging new technologies and industrial restructuring. This is demonstrated on the one hand by technology making it easier to actually work from home, while at the same time job losses in traditional main-stream occupations are making self-employment more attractive. These and other reasons could account for home-based businesses being the fastest growing business sector with …

Microfinance And Households Coping With Hiv/Aids In Zimbabwe: An Exploratory Study, Horizons Program
Microfinance And Households Coping With Hiv/Aids In Zimbabwe: An Exploratory Study, Horizons Program
HIV and AIDS
The widespread prevalence of HIV/AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa adversely affects millions of households. In recent years, microfinance has been proposed as a strategy to help the households of microentrepreneurs respond to the negative economic impacts of HIV/AIDS. This attention to the potential role of microfinance builds upon earlier research that shows that microfinance institutions (MFIs) that charge commercial rates of interest and use sound business practices can become operationally self-sustainable and help improve the lives of the poor and vulnerable nonpoor. This type of MFI generally offers small loans, often combined with savings services. An MFI may also offer business …
