Theoretical Justification Of Sampling Choices In International Marketing Research: Key Issues And Guidelines For Researchers, Nina Reynolds, Antonis Simintiras, Adamantios Diamantopoulos

Nina Reynolds

Sampling in the international environment needs to satisfy the same requirements as sampling in the domestic environment, but there are additional issues to consider, such as the need to balance within-country representativeness with cross-national comparability. However, most international marketing research studies fail to provide theoretical justification for their choice of sampling approach. This is because research design theory and sampling theory have not been well integrated in the context of international research. This paper seeks to fill the gap by developing a framework for determining a sampling approach in international studies. The framework is based on an assessment of the …

How An Export Boom Affects Unemployment, Noel Gaston, Gulasekaran Rajaguru Jun 2014

How An Export Boom Affects Unemployment, Noel Gaston, Gulasekaran Rajaguru

Gulasekaran Rajaguru

Does trade affect the equilibrium rate of unemployment? To answer this question, we propose a small open economy model that incorporates realistic features of labour markets. The model predicts that a sustained improvement in the terms of trade lowers unemployment. We test this prediction for the case of Australia, an economy that is subject to large terms of trade movements. We use a novel technique to estimate the structural model based on a combination of traditional econometric procedures and the calibration of time-varying parameters. Both reduced form and the structural estimates reveal strong evidence that higher export prices, capital accumulation …

The Oecd And Its Campaign Against Harmful Tax Competition: Is This International Law?, John Mclaren

John McLaren

Since the late 1990's, the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) has been very active in its campaign against 'harmful tax competition'. The campaign against tax havens and offshore financial centres involved the naming and shaming of some 36 tax havens. Since then a number of tax havens have agreed with the OECD to reform their bank secrecy laws and to become more transparent in their dealings with other countries. To some extent there have been threats of sanctions against tax havens if they did not agree to co-operate but generally most tax havens have accepted the views of …

The Oecd's "Harmful Tax Competition" Project: Is It International Law?, John Mclaren

John McLaren

On 13 March 2009 the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) announced that Austria, Luxembourg and Switzerland had agreed to introduce laws to allow for the exchange of information on tax evaders. The OECD has been actively trying to protect the national tax bases of its member states and this has now become an imperative with the global financial crisis and government deficits. The OECD's harmful tax competition project has been actively pursued for the past 12 years and appears to be receiving worldwide acceptance. On this basis it can be strongly argued that it now has the status …

Value For Money Auditing - An International Review And Comparison, J Glynn Oct 2012

Value For Money Auditing - An International Review And Comparison, J Glynn

John J Glynn

Value for money (VFM) auditing is not new, in many ways the United Kingdom is now only embarking explicitly upon a path that other countries have already followed. This paper reivews developments in six countries. The first country reviewed is the United Kingdom where two recent pieces of legislation have been introduced which have given statutory recognition to VFM auditing. In only a few years important moves have been made with respect to two important aspects of value for money: economy and efficiency. However, the third and most important element, that of effectiveness, appears so far to be only of …
