Internships And The Assessment Of Student Learning, William Templeton, Karel Updyke, Robert Bennett Jan 2016

Internships And The Assessment Of Student Learning, William Templeton, Karel Updyke, Robert Bennett

Robert B. Bennett

The use of internships is a powerful learning tool that allow business students to make connections between their classroom experience and the world of work. If designed appropriately and positioned correctly in the curriculum, they can also be an ideal opportunity to conduct assurance of learning activities related to business school accreditation. This study reports on survey results relating to business schools’ use of internships in their assurance of learning efforts and describes one school’s successful attempt to use internships as the key platform for its well-developed assurance of learning program.

Emerging Trend In Educating Future Young Marketers: "Like Or Unlike", Pamela Kwok, Paula Hodgson

The implementation of a new academic structure, the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education, in 2012 has led to revised common descriptors for associate-degree and higher-diploma programmes released by the Education Bureau in Hong Kong. Both types of programme are now required to have generic content of at least 60 and 40 percent, respectively, in terms of curriculum design. This generic content covers IT and other skills for initial employment at a para-professional level. The business environment in Hong Kong is highly dynamic, and generic IT skills can play a crucial role in enabling young marketers to be better informed, …

Measuring Cross‐Cultural Service Quality: A Framework For Assessment, Anne Smith, Nina Reynolds Oct 2014

Measuring Cross‐Cultural Service Quality: A Framework For Assessment, Anne Smith, Nina Reynolds

Nina Reynolds

The trend towards internationalisation in many service industries has increased the need for both managers and academics to collect cross-cultural/national consumer-perceived service quality data. Failure to establish cross-cultural equivalence and to detect differences in cross-national response bias will, however, affect data comparability, may invalidate the research results and could therefore lead to incorrect inferences about attitudes and behaviours across national groups. By initially focussing on developments in the mono-cultural service quality literature, a framework is presented whereby academics and managers can assess the potential impact of these international measurement issues. Existing cross-cultural service quality literature is reviewed and the extent …

Curriculum To Prepare For 21st-Century Marketing Learners, Paula Hodgson, Pamela Kwok Mar 2014

Curriculum To Prepare For 21st-Century Marketing Learners, Paula Hodgson, Pamela Kwok

Paula Hodgson

Because they live in the 21st century, students of marketing in higher and further education are open to the challenges of ongoing changes in the business environment. Although the job market may provide indicators of their career expectations, educators need to align the teaching, learning and assessment experiences to be provided in the curriculum so that graduates are well prepared for their future careers. Marketing graduates are expected to have mastered consumer behaviour and marketing research as the top two entry-level concepts in marketing knowledge, but they are also expected to have achieved proficiency in oral and written communications, and …

Authentic Assessment And Feedback In A Masters Program, Grace Mccarthy, Julia Ahrens Jul 2013

Authentic Assessment And Feedback In A Masters Program, Grace Mccarthy, Julia Ahrens

Grace McCarthy

This paper will focus on the use of authentic assessment (Meyers and Nulty 2009) in a post-graduate program, examining graduates' perceptions of assessment and feedback. The aim of the research is to identify whether authentic assessments address the students' need for relevance, one of the key principles of adult learning (Knowles et al. 2006). Anonymous post-graduation surveys allow graduates to give us the benefit of their wisdom as practitioners, an important perspective in evaluating the relevance of assessment tasks. Authentic assessments motivate students because they are seen to be relevant to the students' professional lives rather than something that must …

This paper reviews the scientific literature on needs assessment of individuals living in the community. Providing an overview of the field with a focus on capturing useful information for planning health interventions in the community, this paper will highlight:

Assessing Student Performance In Service Learning: Awards & Results, Laurence Minsky Oct 2011

Assessing Student Performance In Service Learning: Awards & Results, Laurence Minsky

Laurence Minsky

How do you judge student performance in a service-learning environment? One way is by seeing if the activities accomplished the goals of the community organization. But that only gets at part of the picture, because it’s from the organization’s perspective. There are other less traditional, but more powerful ways, to gauge performance: from the change in behaviors of the intended receivers of the service to the employ of outside professional standards. In this presentation, all of these ways will be explored. And, it will be argued that one should take a multi-input approach to assessing student learning, development, and performance.

Assessing Student Learning Through Effective Academic & Professional Partnerships: The Why, The How, And The Results, Laurence Minsky

Laurence Minsky

Objective, external feedback can provide the backup academic departments need to “drive” programmatic and institutional improvements. This session will offer successful approaches for recruiting independent professionals and working with them to develop assessment rubrics to objectively measure student learning on programmatic and institutional levels. At the end of the session, participants will be able to (1) identify potential assessors for curriculum and/or program; (2) develop a strategy for identifying and recruiting independent assessors and; (3) generate talking points with instructions to communicate expectations and assessment methods to get usable, valid results and data.
