Perceptions Of Effective Project Manager Behaviour, Alicia Aitken, Lynn Crawford Nov 2007

Perceptions Of Effective Project Manager Behaviour, Alicia Aitken, Lynn Crawford

Lynn Crawford

Effective project management is as much about demonstration of appropriate behaviours as it is about the application of project management skills. Practitioners and researchers are interested in understanding the behavioural profile of “superior” project managers. Cheng and Dainty’s (2005) research into the behavioural profile of “superior” project managers is one of the first research steps into this field. This research identified twelve behavioural competencies that distinguished “superior” project managers in a sample drawn from the construction industry. Another aspect of the behavioural characteristics of project managers has been explored by Muller and Turner (2006) in their investigation of the differing …

Enhancing Existing Stockmarket Trading Strategies Using Artificial Neural Networks: A Case Study, Bruce Vanstone, Gavin Finnie Nov 2007

Enhancing Existing Stockmarket Trading Strategies Using Artificial Neural Networks: A Case Study, Bruce Vanstone, Gavin Finnie

Bruce Vanstone

Developing financially viable stockmarket trading systems is a difficult, yet rea-sonably well understood process. Once an initial trading system has been built, the desire usually turns to finding ways to improve the system. Typically, this is done by adding and subtracting if-then style rules, which act as filters to the initial buy/sell signal. Each time a new set of rules are added, the system is retested, and, dependant on the effect of the added rules, they may be included into the system. Naturally, this style of data snooping leads to a curve-fitting approach, and the resultant system may not continue …

Coping With Stress: Dispositional Coping Strategies Of Project Managers, Alicia Aitken, Lynn Crawford Sep 2007

Coping With Stress: Dispositional Coping Strategies Of Project Managers, Alicia Aitken, Lynn Crawford

Lynn Crawford

This study explores the relationship between project management practices, control appraisals and dispositional coping strategies used by project managers when dealing with stressful situations. Seventy-one project managers from a global sample participated by completing a web-based questionnaire. Results support the hypotheses that project managers apply more Active Coping and Planning strategies when dealing with stressful situations and that the level of maturity of the organisational practices is related to an increased use of Planning coping strategies. Findings and limitations are discussed. © Copyright Elsevier Ltd and IPMA, 2007

Professional Associations And Global Initiatives, Lynn Crawford

Extract: Communities of practice (Wenger, 1998) are formed when people doing similar things realize they have shared interests. They recognize that there are opportunities to improve both their practices and their performance by sharing knowledge and experience. The project management professional associations as we know them today began in this way: as informal gatherings and forums for networking and exchanging ideas and information. © Copyright John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 2007

Factors Determining Net Interest Margins In Australia: Domestic And Foreign Banks, Barry Williams Jul 2007

Factors Determining Net Interest Margins In Australia: Domestic And Foreign Banks, Barry Williams

Barry Williams

This study tests the application of the Ho and Saunders (1981) model of bank net interest margins (NIMs), and its subsequent developments, using Australian data. The core elements of this model apply in Australia. Bank market power is found to increase NIMs, consistent with McShane and Sharpe (1985), with evidence of bank buying market share and mispricing for risk. Operating costs also have an important role in determining NIMs, together with implied payments and management quality. Bank NIMs are found to have fallen over the study period.

An Empirical Investigation Of The Antecedents, Behaviors, And Outcomes Of Bad Leadership, Anthony Erickson, James Shaw, Zha Agabe

James B Shaw

This exploratory study identifies actions and behaviours which subordinates attribute to ‘bad leadership’ and explores the implications these factors have for organizations. Data was obtained through a web-based survey that generated 335 respondents who completed at least some of the questions. Results identified the prevalence of bad leaders; behaviours causing a leader to be perceived as bad; the impact of bad leaders on the employee and organisation; whether these bad leaders had always been bad; and what happened to the bad leader. An interesting discovery was that the majority of bad leaders were either promoted or rewarded by the organization.

Burnout And Perceived Organisational Support Among Frontline Hospitality Employees, Gabrielle Walters, Michael Raybould

Michael Raybould

This article describes research designed to investigate the relationship between burnout and perceived organisational support (POS) among front-line hospitality employees. Three hundred front-line employees of a multisite hospitality firm were surveyed using an instrument comprising the general survey version of the Maslach Burnout Inventory and the 17-item version of the Survey of Perceived Organisational Support (POS). Significant relationships were found between POS and each of the three burnout dimensions of exhaustion, cynicism and personal efficacy. The findings of this study contribute to the existing academic literature and provide hospitality managers with a better understanding of the factors that contribute to …

Stated Economic And Social Motivations Of Australian Farm Tourism Operators, Claudia Ollenburg, Ralf Buckley Apr 2007

Stated Economic And Social Motivations Of Australian Farm Tourism Operators, Claudia Ollenburg, Ralf Buckley

Claudia Ollenburg

Farm tourism enterprises combine the commercial constraints of regional tourism, the nonfinancial features of family businesses, and the inheritance issues of family farms. They have theoretical significance in regional tourism geography and economics, family tourism business dynamics, and rural diversification. We examined motivations of farm tourism operators throughout Australia using both qualitative and quantitative methods. In contrast to Europe and the United States, social motivations are marginally more important overall than economic motivations. For most operators, however, both are important; and different motivations are dominant for different types of farm landholders and at different stages in farm, family, and business …

Property Rights Developments And Productivity Gains In China: A Law And Economics Perspective, Xiaowen Tian, Vai Lo Mar 2007

Property Rights Developments And Productivity Gains In China: A Law And Economics Perspective, Xiaowen Tian, Vai Lo

Xiaowen Tian

Extract:

Property rights developments have been taken as a major reform measure to improve efficiency in transition economies in recent years. The economic rationale was most clearly spelled out by the property rights theory. According to this theory, well-defined property rights can serve as the basis for the proper functioning of markets because they provide incentive; stimulate competition; and engender the efficient use of resources, technology innovation, and output growth in a world of scarcity (Furubotn and Pejovich, 1972). In other words, the more property rights move into private hands, the greater the efficiency gains, and the more rapid is …
