Emotional Intelligence Skills Training, Jane Murray Nov 2003

Emotional Intelligence Skills Training, Jane Murray

Jane Murray

In recent times a significant amount of research has been undertaken in the area of emotions in organisations (Ashkanasy, Härtel, & Daus, 2002). In particular, the emotional intelligence construct has been widely researched and highlighted as a tool that organisations can harness to improve individual performance of organisational members at all levels (Jordan, Ashkanasy, & Härtel, 2002). This has led to an increased offering of emotional intelligence training interventions, many of which lack empirical support. At present, a debate exists over whether emotional intelligence is an ability, or can be learned (Mayer, Salovey, Caruso, & Sitarenios, 2001). Additionally, the research …

The Relative Relevance Of Cash Flow And Accrual Information: A Multi-Method Approach, Divesh Sharma, Errol Iselin Aug 2003

The Relative Relevance Of Cash Flow And Accrual Information: A Multi-Method Approach, Divesh Sharma, Errol Iselin

Errol Iselin

This multi-method study reports the results of two complementary experiments investigating the relevance of cash flow and accrual information. A behavioural field experiment investigated differences in the accuracy of solvency assessments between commercial lending managers using cash flow information and those using accrual information. Results indicated that commercial lending managers using cash flow information made more accurate solvency assessments than managers using accrual information. Results of an archival quantitative modeling experiment complemented these results and indicated cash flow information had incremental information content beyond accrual information. Our results confirmed the decision-usefulness of cash flow information and supported the mandate of …

Managing Soft Change Projects In The Public Sector, Lynn Crawford, Kerry Costello, Julien Pollack, Lesley Bentley Jul 2003

Managing Soft Change Projects In The Public Sector, Lynn Crawford, Kerry Costello, Julien Pollack, Lesley Bentley

Lynn Crawford

Public sector organisations worldwide are under pressure to increase efficiency while delivering improved and integrated services. Governments are promoting adoption of project-based management and use of formal project management methodologies developed in the context of essentially hard projects in industries where goals and methods are well defined. Problems in applying hard project management practice to the business of government and, in particular, to soft projects such as organisational change, challenge current project management standards and practices. Some writers and researchers have turned to soft systems thinking for enlightenment. They have identified possible links between project management practice and Soft Systems …

Causes Of Delay And Cost Overruns In Construction Of Groundwater Projects In Developing Countries: Ghana As A Case Study, Yaw Frimpong, Jacob Oluwoye, Lynn Crawford Jun 2003

Causes Of Delay And Cost Overruns In Construction Of Groundwater Projects In Developing Countries: Ghana As A Case Study, Yaw Frimpong, Jacob Oluwoye, Lynn Crawford

Lynn Crawford

Delay and cost overruns are common in construction projects and groundwater construction projects in Ghana are not an exception. The paper presents the results of a questionnaire survey conducted to identify and evaluate the relative importance of the significant factors contributing to delay and cost overruns in Ghana groundwater construction projects. Respondents of this survey included personnel from owners, consultants and contractors involved in groundwater projects in Ghana. The results of the study revealed the main causes of delay and cost overruns in construction of groundwater projects included: monthly payment difficulties from agencies; poor contractor management; material procurement; poor technical …

Reliability And The Actfl Oral Proficiency Interview: Reporting Indices Of Interrater Consistency And Agreement For 19 Languages, Eric Surface, Erich Dierdorff Dec 2002

Reliability And The Actfl Oral Proficiency Interview: Reporting Indices Of Interrater Consistency And Agreement For 19 Languages, Eric Surface, Erich Dierdorff

Erich C. Dierdorff

The reliability of the ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) has not been reported since ACTFL revised its speaking proficiency guidelines in 1999. Reliability data for assessments should be reported periodically to provide users with enough information to evaluate the psychometric characteristics of the assessment. This study provided the most comprehensive analysis of ACTFL OPI reliability to date, reporting interrater consistency and agreement data for 19 different languages. Overall, the interrater reliability of the ACTFL OPI was found to be very high. These results demonstrate the importance of using an OPI assessment program that has a well-designed interview process, a well-articulated …

The Decision Usefulness Of Reported Cash Flow And Accrual Information In A Behavioural Field Experiment, Divesh Sharma, Errol Iselin Dec 2002

The Decision Usefulness Of Reported Cash Flow And Accrual Information In A Behavioural Field Experiment, Divesh Sharma, Errol Iselin

Errol Iselin

While recent capital market studies tend to reveal some information content in cash flows, their results may not be generalisable to other contexts such as the assessment of solvency. Mandated accounting standards on cash flow emphasise the relevance of cash flow data for assessing solvency. However, there is a paucity of research that specifically investigates this contention. Accordingly, this study investigates the decision usefulness of reported cash flow and accrual information in a behavioural field solvency assessment experiment. Using a two-group between-subjects field experiment design, bankers with at least three years corporate lending experience made solvency judgments using either cash …

Bayesian Modelling And Forecasting Of Intra-Day Electricity Load, Remy Cottet, Michael Smith Dec 2002

Bayesian Modelling And Forecasting Of Intra-Day Electricity Load, Remy Cottet, Michael Smith

Michael Stanley Smith

With the advent of wholesale electricity markets there has been renewed focus on intra-day electricity load forecasting. This paper employs a multi-equation regression model with a diagonal first order stationary vector autoregresson (VAR) for modeling and forecasting intra-day electricity load. The correlation structure of the disturbances to the VAR and the appropriate subset of regressors are explored using Bayesian model selection methodology. The full spectrum of finite sample inference is obtained using a Bayesian Markov chain Monte Carlo sampling scheme. This includes the predictive distribution of load and the distribution of the time and level of daily peak load, something …
