Consumer electronics have revolutionized the way we live and work. Most students that I know would rather forgo expensive clothing labels than do without their branded smartphone. In fact, some of them would forgo food altogether if it meant their phone could be “always on” and “always with them”, clipped onto the belt buckle, strapped into a pants or jacket sleeve or increasingly into the open palm of their hand. Something happens when our basic needs as humans are overtaken by some other need that was once a distant want at best- plainly confusion in our ability to rightly determine …

In this paper we report an ethnographic research study conducted in one of the world's largest police organizations, the New South Wales Police Service. Our research question was, `How do forms of power shape organizational members' ethical practices?' We look at existing theories that propose the deployment of two interrelated arguments: that ethics are embedded in organizational practices and discourse at a micro-level of everyday organizational life, which is contrasted with a focus on the macro-organizational, institutional forces that are seen to have an impact on ethics. Resisting this distinction between the `micro' and the `macro', we build on these …

These two dimensions have the potential to create identifiable tensions between head office and subsidiaries that will need to be understood and managed.
Practical implications – The paper offers practical guidance to managers by providing …

In this paper, we identify and discuss three different levels of ethics that can be implemented by organisations pursuing global, transnational or multinational strategies. Our main argument is that an organisations's approach to ethics depends on its level and type of international strategy adopted. Organisations pursuing global or transnational strategies are likely to regard their approach to ethics as an important strategic decision that needs to be implemented in all subsidiaries around the world. Organisations with multinational strategies are likely to face tension between head-office and subsidiary management if they operate at different levels of ethics.
