Urban farming can enhance the lives of communities and help reduce food scarcity. This paper presents a conceptual prototype of an efficient urban farming community that can be scaled for a single apartment building or an entire community across all global geoeconomics regions, including densely populated cities and rural, developing towns and communities. When deployed in coordination with smart crop choices, local farm support, and efficient transportation then the result isn’t just sustainability, but also increasing fresh produce accessibility, optimizing nutritional value, eliminating the use of ‘forever chemicals’, reducing transportation costs, and fostering global environmental benefits.

Space flight participants are not professional astronauts and not subject to the rules and guidance covering space flight crewmembers. Ordinal logistic regression of survey data was utilized to explore public acceptance of current medical screening recommendations and regulations for safety risk and implied liability for civil space flight participation. Independent variables constituted participant demographic representations while dependent variables represented current Federal Aviation Administration guidance and regulations. Odds ratios were derived based on the demographic categories to interpret likelihood of acceptance for the criteria. Commercial airports are publicly-owned transportation infrastructure, usually funded with bonds. The bond rating decision for these entities thus has important ramifications for bond investors, issuers, airport managers, and even the communities the airports serve, but the rating decision process is not well understood. This paper discusses a simulation of the rating process in two decision environments, including a downgrade. The effect of information framing in an environment of incomplete data is examined using amateur evaluators. This study explores the feasibility of miniature shipping container usage within existing intermodal transportation (IT) supply chains. Smaller intermodal container shipments may help realign freight shipments with the most efficient transportation mode, rail. These containers embolden the dimensional domain (DD) of shipping. The shipping container dimensional domain (container size variation and modal fluidity) is widespread and results in shipments that are often larger or more infrequent than needed. The DD impacts transport mode, shipping frequency, shipment velocity, intermodal supply chain accessibility, and regional shipping networks. Maximum difference scaling was used to analyze the importance logistics students attach to 17 job attributes for internships as well as for full-time, entry-level positions. Significant differences in importance were found on nine of the 17 attributes tested. Room for advancement was the most important criterion for full-time positions while atmosphere/work environment was most important for internships. Implications for practitioners, academics and students are discussed. This article is about FMCSA data and its analysis. The article responds to the two-part question: How does an Item Response Theory (IRT) model work differently . . . or better than any other model? The response to the first part is a careful, completely non-technical exposition of the fundamentals for IRT models. It differentiates IRT models from other models by providing the rationale underlying IRT modeling and by using graphs to illustrate two key properties for data items. The discoverability and admissibility of post-accident “preventability” determinations by trucking companies is often much disputed in truck accident cases. It is well known that Plaintiff’s attorneys will try to construe a trucking company’s classification of an accident as “preventable” as an admission of fault during the course of a lawsuit. However, statements made by the FMCSA provide significant support to a trucking company’s efforts to preclude discovery or admission of preventability determinations in a lawsuit. The trucking industry faces a number of issues as it tries to meet growing demand for services. Trucking services are stifled by three factors: (1) strict enforcement of hours of service requirements which preclude carriers from meeting scheduled appointments; (2) over-the-road driver shortages; and (3) the absence of tort reform or federal preemption to trump nuclear judgments which reach upstream to shippers and brokers. However, rail may be an alternative for a growing number of commodities. This article examines the viability of rail services for the wine industry.

In-Transit Cargo Crime Impacting The Retail Supply Chain, John Tabor

Surveys of retail security directors show that almost half of those polled had been the victims of a supplychain disruption directly related to cargo theft. This is a significant increase from just five years ago. In order to fully understand the issue of cargo theft, retailers need to know why it exists, who is perpetrating it, how risk can be reduced, and ultimately how to react to a loss. This article explores a number of dimensions of the issue, and offers several suggestions for mitigating the risk and dealing with theft after it occurs.

While aerial delivery drones capture headlines, the pace of adoption of drones in warehouses has shown the greatest acceleration. Warehousing constitutes 30% of the cost of logistics in the US. The rise of ecommerce, greater customer service demands of retail stores, and a shortage of skilled labor have intensified competition for efficient warehouse operations. This takes place during an era of shortening technology life cycles. This paper integrates several theoretical perspectives on technology diffusion and adoption to propose a framework to inform supply chain decision-makers on when to invest in new robotics technology.

Effect Of Price Reduction And Increased Service Frequency On Public Transport Travel, Inge Brechan

A random effects meta-analysis of the results from 15 projects involving price reduction and 9 projects involving increased service frequency showed that both price reduction and increased service frequency generated public transport travels. On average, the increased service frequency projects generated more travels by public transport than the price reduction projects. In the increased service frequency projects the proportion of travels generated by the increased frequency was strongly influenced by the size of the frequency increase. In the price reduction projects, we did not find a significant effect of the size of the price reduction on the proportion of travels …

This paper integrates a customer segmentation method with a discrete event simulation model to bridge the gap between identifying customer behaviors and using this knowledge to respond to customers and make the best use of resources. Three strategies are proposed and examined to improve the operation efficiency of a ticket-booking system. Their objective is to assist high-value customers in obtaining the tickets they want and/or reduce cancellations and failure-to-pays from low-value customers. Our simulation results demonstrate that the high-value, customer-friendly strategy beats all in assisting high-value customers and simultaneously improves railway operation performance. The purpose of this research is to identify critical skills needed in the logistics profession now and in the future. This study uses survey research, means tests, and importance analysis to explore a multi-factor framework that identifies critical supply chain skills perceived by 176 experienced supply chain professionals from manufacturing, transportation, and retail/wholesale segments. Results indicate significant differences exist between current and future needed skills, among current capabilities and current availability of skills, and among skill needs utilizing a multi-factor index. The purpose of this paper is to present an empirically derived framework for Logistics Management and discuss how it integrates organization’s short-term objectives with the need to respond to the complex external environment. Organizational theory, strategic planning and logistics management literature were reviewed carefully in identifying the conceptual support for the derived framework of logistics management and organizational competitiveness. The proposed generalized framework demonstrates that Logistics Management Strategy has the strongest positive effect on Organizational Competitiveness when it is mediated by Logistics Coordination Effectiveness and Customer Service Commitment.
