The Changing Structure Of Montana's Economy: What Is Tourism's Place?, Kara Grau

Institute for Tourism and Recreation Research Publications

This report looks at how the economy of Montana and the entire Mountain West has been changing since the 1970s. Extractive natural resource industries are no longer as important to the economy as they may once have been. Other industries, services in particular, have become relatively more important in terms of employment and earnings in the state. Nonresident travel accounts for 7.5% of total employment (over 45,900 jobs) in Montana. While some may view nonresident travel as insignificant or completely unrelated to what happens in the rest of Montana’s economy, nonresident travel contributes jobs to every industrial sector, directly or …

Tourism, Development And Poverty Reduction In Guizhou And Yunnan, John A. Donaldson Jun 2007

Tourism, Development And Poverty Reduction In Guizhou And Yunnan, John A. Donaldson

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

How did the differing strategies adopted to develop tourism in Guizhou and Yunnan affect patterns of economic development and poverty reduction? The answer is paradoxical. Both provincial governments incorporated tourism as part of their overall development strategies, but their tourism sites were distributed and structured strikingly differently. In Yunnan, although tourism contributed to rapid economic growth, it did not reduce rural poverty as much as might be expected from a large rural-based industry. By contrast, Guizhou's relatively small-scale tourism industry, although not contributing significantly to growth, was distributed largely in poor areas and was structured to allow poor people to …

Measuring The Costs Of Employee Turnover In Illinois Public Park And Recreation Agencies: An Exploratory Study, William R. Mckinney, Kenneth R. Bartlett, Michael A. Mulvaney

Faculty Research and Creative Activity

Employee turnover is an unavoidable part of most public park and recreation agencies. Agencies must become increasingly concerned with understanding the repercussions of an employee leaving an agency as they attempt to strategically assess current and future economic and human resource plans. This exploratory study considers the issue of turnover within a cost analytical framework and proposes a model for park and recreation agencies to accurately quantify their employee turnover costs. Specifically, the study incorporates Cascio’s (2000) costing model of turnover to explore the costs associated with the departing employee and the placement of a new employee. Building upon Cascio’s …

An Examination Of Indicators Of Sustainable Development For Tourism, June Phelan

The United National World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) identifies sustainable tourism development as a preferred means for the future development of the industry. Indicators are an established means of achieving and measuring progress achieved towards sustainable tourism development. Consequently, indicators of sustainable development for tourism have been proposed as the building blocks for sustainable tourism development. Information derived from indicators …

Price Bundling In Online Travel Markets: An Exploratory Study, Jinhoo Kim

Virtually all types of firms in the hospitality and travel industry, from suppliers such as hotels and airlines to intermediaries such as travel agents, are encouraging customers to purchase travel “packages” rather than a single component of travel. The purpose of this study is to determine whether the practice of price bundling by online travel agents is associated with actual monetary …

Evaluating Short-Term Tourism Economic Effects In Confined Economies: Conceptual And Empirical Considerations, Robertico Croes, Denver E. Severt

Rosen Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

This paper discusses the literature for three types of analyses that governments can use to ascertain the effectiveness of their spending of tax dollars to promote a tourism destination. Conclusions based on the type of method chosen require that the user understand the specific context, time horizon and their need for the study. For the case study presented in this paper, the context of a confined area, the time horizon …

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This article draws upon a large-scale survey as well as focus group discussions to examine how Singapore households grapple with the demands of participating in globalized work. It highlights the household as a site of analysis, where individuals engage with contemporary trends of globalisation in their daily lives. Specifically, this article examines the case of Singapore households where one or both spouses engage in business travel. The study (a) emphasises the need to focus on processes that bring about shorter-term transnational variations to a household's daily geographies and how household members negotiate these disruptions; and (b) demonstrates that the transnationalizing …
