Analysis Of Low-Cost Carriers In The Post-Soviet States, Tamilla Curtis, Dawna Rhoades Nov 2015

Analysis Of Low-Cost Carriers In The Post-Soviet States, Tamilla Curtis, Dawna Rhoades

Dr. Tamilla Curtis

The research paper provides an overview of low-cost carrier (LCC) development in the post- Soviet states with the analysis of the largest aviation market in Russia. The LCC model seeks to achieve a competitive advantage through the reduction of operating costs below the traditional airline model. Since the post-Soviet states are emerging economies, airlines face a high level of uncertainty and experience a number of unique problems. While the global community enjoys the benefits offered by LCCs, the question remains why this model has not been successful in the 15 newly formed countries, with the exception of the Hungarian low-cost …

Market Analysis For Small And Mid-Size Commercial Turboprop Aircraft, Vitaly Guzhva, Tamilla Curtis, Vladislav Borodulin Nov 2015

Market Analysis For Small And Mid-Size Commercial Turboprop Aircraft, Vitaly Guzhva, Tamilla Curtis, Vladislav Borodulin

Dr. Tamilla Curtis

Recent fuel price volatility and growing concerns about the efficiency of regional jets have led to a revival of large turboprop aircraft as efficient passenger carriers on short-haul regional routes. However, the overall market for smaller turboprops is much less defined as it is characterized by a plethora of small commuter and niche operators in addition to regional carriers. Since most small and mid-size turboprop manufacturers have gone bankrupt or discontinued production due to some other reasons, current operators of this aircraft class are left with aging fleets that would need to be replaced by 2020-2030. This paper assesses the …

Three Of A Kind? The Special Case Of Australia's Island Councils, Elisabeth Sinnewe, Michael Kortt, Brian Dollery, Philip Hayward Oct 2015

Three Of A Kind? The Special Case Of Australia's Island Councils, Elisabeth Sinnewe, Michael Kortt, Brian Dollery, Philip Hayward

Dr Elisabeth Sinnewe

In common with many other countries, Australian local government policy- makers have focussed heavily on improving financial sustainability and oper- ational efficiency through structural change and other modes of systemic reform. However, this system-wide approach cannot adequately deal with small island councils due to their sui generis characteristics. In an effort to fill this gap in the literature, this article examines the financial sustainability of Australia’s three island councils – Flinders, Kangaroo and King – over the period 2008–2013 in order to determine whether alternative organisational arrangements may be better suited to their unique circumstances. In so doing, our study …

Trial By Media: An Empirical Investigation Of Corporate Reputation And Stock Returns In Australia, Elisabeth Sinnewe, Scott Niblock May 2015

Trial By Media: An Empirical Investigation Of Corporate Reputation And Stock Returns In Australia, Elisabeth Sinnewe, Scott Niblock

Dr Elisabeth Sinnewe

This article examines whether investors are able to generate abnormal risk-adjusted returns in the Australian market based on media-specific firm reputational factors under market uncertainty between 2004 and 2012. The findings suggest that after controlling for crisis-centric time periods and market risk factors, contrarian trading strategies produce abnormal returns for poor corporate reputation firms but not for their good corporate reputation counterparts. Corporate reputation may be a driver of performance for poorly performing Australian firms and could be considered a stimulus for trading activity due to its explanatory capabilities.

Is Biggest Best? A Comparative Analysis Of The Financial Viability Of The Brisbane City Council, Elisabeth Sinnewe, Michael Kortt, Brian Dollery May 2015

Is Biggest Best? A Comparative Analysis Of The Financial Viability Of The Brisbane City Council, Elisabeth Sinnewe, Michael Kortt, Brian Dollery

Dr Elisabeth Sinnewe

Structural reform through forced mergers has been a dominant feature of Australian local government for decades. Advocates of compulsory consolidation contend that larger municipalities perform better across a wide range of attributes, including financial sustainability. Although empirical scholars of local government have invested considerable effort into investigating these claims, no one has yet examined the performance of Brisbane City Council against other local authorities, despite the fact that it is by far the largest council in Australia. This paper seeks to remedy this neglect by comparing Brisbane with Sydney City Council, an average of six southeast Queensland councils and an …

Beach And Surf Tourism And Recreation In Australia: Vulnerability And Adaptation, Michael Raybould

Michael Raybould

The Beach and surf tourism and recreation in Australia: Vulnerability and adaptation project has produced estimates of economic values for recreation and tourism related to beach and surf amenities across four case-study locations in Australia. Estimates of the non-market consumer surplus values of beach recreation indicate that beach recreation is worth around: $70 million per annum (p.a.) to residents of the Sunshine Coast (Qld), $32 million p.a. to residents of Clarence Valley (NSW), $6 million p.a. to residents of the Surf Coast (Vic) and $4 million p.a. for residents of Augusta-Margaret River (WA). In addition to the non-market values, real …

A Classification Scheme For Analysing Web 2.0 Tourism Websites, Scott Bingley, Stephen Burgess, Carmen Sellitto, Carmen Cox, Jeremy Buultjens

Carmen Cox

This article proposes a Web 2.0 classification scheme developed from a study of tourism websites that have adopted Web 2.0 features. The article goes on to outline various website analysis techniques noted and reported in the literature. Moreover, the authors contend that these previously documented approaches are inadequate when used to analysis commonly encountered features associated with typical Web 2.0 website - many sites containing a combination of weblogs (blogs), videos, rating systems, images or other forms of user-generated content. The article continues with an example of how the authors developed their own approach to the analysis of Web 2.0 …

Circos: Tapping Into Social Media (A), Kevin W. Sproule, C. Jason Woodard

C. Jason Woodard

Social media was a topic that had entered into the daily vocabulary of teenagers and business executives alike. With this surge in popularity and influence worldwide the open question was what this new way of interacting would mean for businesses and whether or not social media could really be a driver of company profitability or just a nice way to share photos with friends? Circos, a Singapore-based company, developed a business that it hoped would help to answer those questions. By using a proprietary sentiment analysis tool, Circos had mined the vast world of online reviews available on various social …

After a successful presentation in the (A) case, Frederic Langlois, Circos.com general manager in Singapore, headed back to the company headquarters. He brought back not only the possibility of a new client, but also a specific request. The Raffles Hotel had asked him to provide new functionality beyond the existing social media analytics dashboard Circos had become known for. The Raffles Hotel manager had asked, “It would be great to have a simple and meaningful analysis of what people are saying about our property online. What would be really great, though, would be to know who is saying what. I …

Conceptualising A Contemporary Marketing Mix For Sustainable Tourism, Alan Pomering, Gary Noble, Lester Johnson Mar 2011

Conceptualising A Contemporary Marketing Mix For Sustainable Tourism, Alan Pomering, Gary Noble, Lester Johnson

Lester Johnson

This paper outlines how marketing, though traditionally considered an enemy of sustainability, can play a role in implementing sustainable tourism. It notes the redefinition in 2007 by the American Marketing Association of marketing's aims to consider wider societal issues beyond those of clients and customers. It illustrates how the recognition of the importance of sustainable tourism at all scales of tourism activity provides marketing with an opportunity to pursue sustainability outcomes. We review the strategic tourism marketing planning process and conceptually develop a sustainability tourism marketing model that embeds sustainability considerations at each stage of the planning process. Our proposed …
