Working Paper Part 1 : The Very First Pilgrimage - An Inspired Trajectory Out Of Africa, Ian S. Mcintosh
Working Paper Part 1 : The Very First Pilgrimage - An Inspired Trajectory Out Of Africa, Ian S. Mcintosh
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
One hundred thousand years ago, give or take, the forebears of some of Australia’s First Nations—by some accounts as few as 150 people—left Africa on an immense journey. After some 2,000 generations, the passage through new and unfamiliar territories of these first modern human beings terminated in a supercontinent that included Australia, Papua, and Tasmania. By some estimates, no more than 150 people—the same number that had originally left Africa—made the final sea crossing that separates Indonesia and Australia. Research on such ancient migrations emphasises population growth, the ‘selfish gene,’ and the territorial imperative, as key drivers of mobility. This …
The Epic Pilgrimage: The Way Of The Ascetics Of El Capitan, John Shultz
The Epic Pilgrimage: The Way Of The Ascetics Of El Capitan, John Shultz
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
El Capitan and its related environs constitute the ‘holiest of holies,’ the ‘center of the universe,’ or the ‘mecca’ of the rock climbing world. Big walls are simply the tallest, steepest, and most challenging rockfaces on the planet. For the tribe of big wall climbers, El Capitan, which stands nearly 1000 meters above the Merced River in Yosemite National Park in California, has a mystique and allure unmatched by any other location. In previous work, I establish the concept of climbing on El Capitan as ‘vertical pilgrimage’ (Shultz, 2020), and in this paper, I focus specifically on climbing efforts as …

A Semi-Autoethnographical Account Of The Order Of Malta’S Annual Pilgrimage To Lourdes, Dane Munro Km
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
Lourdes, in the French Pyrenees, has been a pilgrimage site since 1858. At present, about six million Roman Catholic pilgrims and others visit Lourdes every year. During the annual weeklong pilgrimage of the Order of St John, an average of about 7,500 participants from 45 countries, including 380 doctors, nurses and pharmacists, 250 priests and other volunteers, are nursing and caring for 1,500 malades (the sick and suffering). This semi-autoethnographical account is based on many years of visitation as a member of the Order of St John and describes the various changes of a political and societal nature, while the …
Making History Visible: Ireland’S National Famine Way Told Through Models And Interactive Digital Narratives, E. Moore Quinn
Making History Visible: Ireland’S National Famine Way Told Through Models And Interactive Digital Narratives, E. Moore Quinn
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
The National Famine Way is a trail along Ireland’s Royal Canal that traces the remarkable trek of the 1,490 tenants who were evicted by their landlord, Denis Mahon, from his estate in Strokestown, County Roscommon, in the Republic of Ireland, during ‘Black ’47,’ the worst year of the Great Irish Famine (Irish: An Gorta Mór, the Great Hunger of 1847). The evictees were ‘escorted’ from their homes to vessels that awaited them in Dublin. They were then taken to Liverpool, where they were placed on four so-called ‘coffin ships’ bound for Canada. The path along the Royal Canal is 165 …
Roles Of Religious Guides In Tourism: A Qualitative Study From Japan, Ricardo Nicolas Progano
Roles Of Religious Guides In Tourism: A Qualitative Study From Japan, Ricardo Nicolas Progano
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
Pilgrimage travel has become an important element in contemporary tourism, as visitors flock to sacred locations (UNWTO, 2015). However, some aspects of pilgrimage travel remain relatively understudied, with one of them being the roles of guides in these locations. Based on previous academic works, the present study aims to bridge this gap by analysing the role of religious figures who engage in guiding activities aimed at the general public. For this, Shippōryū-ji, a Shugendō temple located in Japan, is presented as the case study. As previous research on the subject is scarce, a qualitative approach was deemed suitable. Utilising interview …
A Changed Understanding Of Miracles In Religious Tourism, Stephen F. Haller
A Changed Understanding Of Miracles In Religious Tourism, Stephen F. Haller
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
In this modern age, an unsceptical acceptance of supernatural events–those which cannot be explained as part of the natural order of things–is less common than it once was. This trend is reflected in the declining frequency of miracle-cures certified by the Medical Bureau at Lourdes. Yet miracles past, and the promise of possible miracles in the present, still attract multitudes of religious pilgrims and tourists to sacred sites all over the world. While the frequency of miracles goes down, the appeal of miracles goes on, and the number of religious visitors has not declined. What role do miracles now play …
Emotions At The Border: Verbal Aspects Of The Attari-Wagah Patriotic Pilgrimage, Anna V. Bochkovskaya
Emotions At The Border: Verbal Aspects Of The Attari-Wagah Patriotic Pilgrimage, Anna V. Bochkovskaya
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
For over sixty years the Attari-Wagah checkpoint at the border between India and Pakistan has been a site for the Beating Retreat, a colorful ceremony of lowering the national flags performed jointly by the Indian Border Security Force and the Pakistan Rangers. This emotional ritual is generally perceived as a demonstration of aggressive designs, on the one hand, and as a symbol of goodwill and possible cooperation between neighbouring countries, on the other.
In recent decades visiting/viewing the border (sīmā darśan) has become an essential part of tourist packages for travellers in North-West India, while the notion of ‘patriotic pilgrimage’ …
From Palma To Lluc – The Social And Organisational Life Of A Nocturnal Pilgrimage In Mallorca, Maja Balle
From Palma To Lluc – The Social And Organisational Life Of A Nocturnal Pilgrimage In Mallorca, Maja Balle
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
Although the island of Mallorca is well known for its beaches and mass tourism sector, a local pilgrimage tradition with deep roots in Catholicism is still thriving on the island; on the first weekend in August, thousands of people gather to make a nocturnal pilgrimage to a shrine at Lluc Mountain. Rather than focusing on the actual performance of the sacred journey or the culmination of its ritualised accomplishment, this case study explores the social and economic framing of the event orchestrated by actors from the local community, the church, the governmental sector, and other private and public stakeholders. The …

The Grand Magal in Ṭūbā, in Senegal is the third biggest religious event in the Muslim community after the pilgrimage to the mausoleum of Imam al-Hussayn in Karbala, Iraq and the pilgrimage to Mecca, Saudi Arabia. This paper deals with the pilgrimage to Ṭūbā that celebrates the life and teachings of Shaykh Amadou Bamba, the founder of the Sufi Murīdiyya Brotherhood. The event takes place on the 18th of Safar, the second month in the Islamic lunar calendar. International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
The present preliminary study seeks to explore the pilgrim tourist experience and their revisit intentions post-COVID pandemic. Data were collected at the Amarnath Holy Shrine in Jammu and Kashmir, India, using a combination of primary and secondary sources, including seven in-depth semi-structured telephone interviews with pilgrims using the snowball sampling technique. Five main themes were found regarding revisiting intentions, including ease of registration, safety and security, health facilities, accommodation facilities, food and beverage services, and connectivity of the destinations. The study highlights that despite COVID-19, most respondents agree to return to visit the holy Amarnath Cave as they felt that …
Salvation In A Palace: Luxurious Representation Of Political Spirituality In Iran, Zahra Khoshk Jan
Salvation In A Palace: Luxurious Representation Of Political Spirituality In Iran, Zahra Khoshk Jan
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
The present study tries to answer this question: Why is the mausoleum of Imam Reza (a holy saint shrine) one of the most luxurious and expensive buildings in the world? By staying in Mashhad as a pilgrim, the researcher conducted 45 participatory and semi-structured interviews with pilgrims in two consecutive stages. For analysing the collected data, a qualitative research method was used based on Constructing Grounded Theory. The concept of ‘the politics of constructing spirituality’ as the core category referred to the fact that the main reasons for the luxury and magnificence of Imam Reza’s mausoleum in Iran, are as …
Redefining The Dimensions Of Spirituality And Pilgrimage In Religious Tourism: Iranian Pilgrimage Cities, Asghar Molaei
Redefining The Dimensions Of Spirituality And Pilgrimage In Religious Tourism: Iranian Pilgrimage Cities, Asghar Molaei
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
Pilgrimage is one of the ways to acquire spirituality in the Shiite sect, and the shrines of the Imams are places of pilgrimage full of spirituality. Spirituality in Islam is one of the mental states of human beings, which has a high position in perfection from Shiite thought. Pilgrimage, as an Islamic custom and ethical practice, through the pattern of pilgrimage in religious, devotional, and prayer spaces can create spirituality for pilgrims. In line with the principles of praying and celebrating the rituals of God, the holy shrines of the Ahl al-Bayt (AS) are important centres of interest in Iranian …
Thick Description Of Ashura Rituals In Iran: Case Study Of The Nakhl-Gardani Ritual, Gholamheidar Ebrahimbay Salami, Mostafa Mahmoudi
Thick Description Of Ashura Rituals In Iran: Case Study Of The Nakhl-Gardani Ritual, Gholamheidar Ebrahimbay Salami, Mostafa Mahmoudi
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
A Nakhl is a huge wooden structure similar to a cypress tree in shape, which on the anniversary of the martyrdom of Iranian national and religious legends is carried ceremonially, symbolising their coffin. The origins of the ritual of Nakhl-gardani go back to ancient Iran and the martyrdom of the legendary hero Siavash. But after the coming to power of the Safavid Shiite government, this ritual was held only to commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussein every year on the day of Ashura in the arid and desert areas of central Iran, where the cypress trees grow. The present article …
Contemporary Trends In The Theological Understanding Of Christian Pilgrimage, Piotr Roszak
Contemporary Trends In The Theological Understanding Of Christian Pilgrimage, Piotr Roszak
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
This paper analyses the historical changes that have taken place in the Christian theology of pilgrimage from Patristics to the present time. Against that background, it identifies the core parameters of the theological debate on pilgrimage, including its foundation in the truths of the faith and its key dimensions. In view of attempts to reduce the essence of pilgrimage to phenomenological descriptions in contemporary analyses, the author proposes to take advantage of the explicatory potential of hylomorphism as a theory that differentiates between matter and form. When applied to pilgrimage, hylomorphism makes it possible to integrate theological perspectives with the …

Exploring The Experiences Of Women On Muslim Pilgrimage: A Study Of Hazaratbal Shrine In Kashmir, Ab Qayoom Shah, Professor Aneesa Shafi
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
The aim of this study is to explore the experiences of women at Hazaratbal shrine in Kashmir also known as Madinut-ul-Sani (second Madina). In spite of growing interest of scholars in sacred tourism research, little efforts are made to examine female perception of holy shrine experiences. The authors collected data through interviews and participant observation of female pilgrims/visitors, at the shrine. The theoretical base of the study is the phenomenological work of Schultz. After the completion of analysis, five main categories of perceptions appeared which attract women visitors to Hazaratbal shrine namely prayer and worship, thanksgiving, healing, learning and heritage.

Acceptance Of New Travel Norms Among Potential Umrah And Hajj Pilgrims: An Empirical Investigation, Siti Sara Ibrahim, Mohd Hafiz Hanafiah, Muhammad Azlan Shah Badar
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
This paper investigates how Umrah and Hajj travellers’ needs and wants are influenced by their acceptance (behaviour) of new norms practices (social distancing, hygiene standards, wearing face masks) in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. The cross-sectional survey utilises the purposive sampling method with 216 respondents. Partial-least Square-Structural Equation Modelling (PLSSEM) was used to confirm the study model and test the hypotheses. Additionally, this study validates the role of age in influencing the new norms of travel behaviour through the PLS-SEM multi-group analysis (MGA). Path Analysis results revealed that psychological needs, safety needs and selfactualisation influence the new norms of …

Exploring The Concept Of Muslim Friendly Tourism, Aini Khalida Muslim, Amran Harun
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
Most researchers face problems investigating Muslim-friendly destinations when they become confused with overlapping terms that seem to convey the same concepts, such as Islamic Tourism, Halal Tourism, and Muslim Friendly Tourism. This study discusses the concepts, purpose, target customers, destinations, products, and services to fill the gap in understanding the differences between the three terms from the perspective of Muslim and non-Muslim tourists. This study also applies a systematic literature review (SLR) method to filter and locate papers related to Muslim Friendly Tourism from 2015 to 2020. The analysis is based on the year the article was published, the publisher’s …

Contribution Of Faith-Based Activities To Tourism Development In Two Religious Sites In Southwest Nigeria, Ngozi Eunice Ezenagu, Patrick U. Okpoko, Chinwe C. Okpoko
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
Faith-based activities are dynamic rituals that can bring about spiritual satisfaction. The perceived efficacy of these activities greatly influences the number of faith participants visiting religious centres. Although these activities are primarily practiced as religious obligations, they have helped to precipitate travel and the rise of tourism service industries. These include accommodation, transportation, food, drinks, souvenirs, spiritual objects (anointing oil, ritual mantels, handkerchief, cross emblem, rosary tesbihu (prayer beads), praying mat, and candles) and the likes, which enhance tourism expenditure and income. This study examines the contribution to tourism development of faith-based activities, in two religious centres in south-western Nigeria. …

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
This study aims to reveal the practices of tolerance between the adherents of Islam and Hinduism when they were engaged in worship at Kemaliq Lingsar, a sacred religious site which is used as a pilgrimage site where both parties pray and perform religious tourism and rituals. Drawing on the interpretive approach, this study found the wisdom of the two religious communities in Lingsar Village, West Lombok Regency, Indonesia. This area exhibits unique strategies for sharing the same pilgrimage site: two communities performing their respective rituals in turn and in unison in the same space with complete understanding. This tolerance practiced …

Tourism And Crisis: Comparing The Impacts Of Covid-19 And Natural Disasters On The Hajj And Umrah Industry, Udin Supriadi Dr, Mohammad Rindu Fajar Islamy Mr, Ahmad Fuadin Mr, Muhammad A. Rahkman Mr
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
This study aims to compare the impact of the Covid-19 Pandemic and Natural Disasters on the Hajj and Umrah industries. This pilgrimage substantially contributes to foreign exchange earnings; therefore, the negative potential caused by disasters must be a significant concern for policymakers in this sector. In recent years, religious-based tourism, especially the hajj and umrah (the out-of-season pilgrimage to Mecca), has experienced significant rise of demand worldwide. To explore the impact of various disasters on this industry, using the purposive sampling method, semi-structured interviews were conducted with travel agents in Bandung over the course of two months. The findings from …

Holy Baths As Attractions In Religious Tourism: A Study Of Ritualistic Bathing Fairs In India, Sanchita Paul
Holy Baths As Attractions In Religious Tourism: A Study Of Ritualistic Bathing Fairs In India, Sanchita Paul
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
Much of what marks the contemporary Hindu ritual scene finds its origin in the activities of Indus Valley Civilisation. There has been, without doubt, a corrosion of religious faith with the progress of modernity, but surprisingly the bathing tradition for ritual ablution spanning across centuries of time has not faded, despite the passage of so many ages and despite changes all around. Hinduism has a strong and ancient tradition of pilgrimage, widely recognised as Tīrtha-yatra (tour of the sacred fords), which involves holy baths in water bodies as a symbolic purification ritual. Most of the Hindu pilgrimage places are along …
Determinants Of Spiritual Tourism Consumption: A Hierarchical Approach, Suneel Kumar, Shivangi Gupta, Shekhar Asthana
Determinants Of Spiritual Tourism Consumption: A Hierarchical Approach, Suneel Kumar, Shivangi Gupta, Shekhar Asthana
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
This paper aims to analyse the relationship between factors influencing the travel intentions of the spiritual tourist. The research design comprises three segments, i.e., identifying factors from the literature, conducting interviews with the academic experts and managers, and analysing the responses recorded. The Interpretive Structural Modelling (ISM) technique is used to determine the interlinkage between the factors and develop a hierarchical relationship. This paper identified twelve factors that influence the travel intention of spiritual tourists. The results indicate that the pro-tourism attitude of the management of religious monuments, presence of relaxation and recreational activities, historical and cultural heritage of a …
