There Is Nothing So Practical As Good Theory For Tracking Destination Image Over Time, Steven Pike, H. S. Jin, Filareti Kotsi
All Works
Destination image has consistently been a popular theme in the tourism literature. This is due to the important role the construct can play in the intangible nature of consumers' travel decisions. However, one temporal aspect, of how destination image might change over time, has attracted little academic research attention. This manuscript attempts to make a contribution to this gap in the literature by reporting key findings from an investigation into perceptions held of one of New Zealand's most popular resort destinations, Rotorua, at three points in time over two decades. The research is narrowly focused on the perceptions of consumers …

Socioeconomic Predictors Of Visitor Harassment: Why Knowing Vendor Migration Patterns Is Important, Annmarie Nicely, Aiden Selvia
Socioeconomic Predictors Of Visitor Harassment: Why Knowing Vendor Migration Patterns Is Important, Annmarie Nicely, Aiden Selvia
Visitor Harassment Research Unit Special Papers
Trader harassment (TH) of visitors is a widespread problem around the world, but little is known about the phenomenon’s predictors. Hence, the goal of the present study was to determine whether national socioeconomic measures could predict TH intensity levels at destinations. To achieve this, data from primary and secondary sources were gathered and analyzed using regression analysis. No predictors were found, but significant correlations were discovered. Of note, significant correlations were found between TH frequency and the national socioeconomic measures of poverty, income disparity, school life expectancy in years, and percentage of population with improved sanitation facilities. However, significant correlations …

¿Historia Y Cultura Al Viento? Los Efectos De La Construcción Del Aeropuerto Internacional De Chinchero En El Patrimonio Arqueológico Circundante, Becca Teachey
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Since the mid-1990s, numerous Moroccan riads, or traditional homes built around a central courtyard, have been converted into tourist accommodations in Morocco’s old medinas. This paper seeks to analyze the impact of riad-style hostels specifically on the medinas, as hostels are relatively new to Morocco and have various benefits and consequences for the community. Though hostels are often portrayed as a sustainable form of tourist accommodation compared to multinational hotel corporations, they have an acute impact by bringing tourists into previously residential spaces and exacerbating the effects of global gentrification. My research relies on interviews with hostel owners and employees, …

Motives To Take A Gamified Trip: An Interpretative Study Using Q Method, Ye (Sandy) Shen, Marion Joppe, Hwan-Suk Chris Choi, Sunghwan Yi
TTRA Canada 2019 Conference
Destinations have initiated different gamification practices in the last 10 years. However, there is a lack of understanding of what constitutes gamified trips as well as tourists’ motives to take such a trip. Knowing why tourists would like to engage in a gamified context can help designers create valuable games and offer more memorable experiences. This research sheds light upon the concept and categorization of gamified trips, expands the use of Q method to examine travel motives, and proposes six types of players of gamified trips. Additionally, it provides implications for DMOs on how to apply gamification to attract potential …

Residents As Destination Advocates: A Netnographic Exploration Of Resident-Generated Advocacy Through A Facebook Travel Group, Michael Lever, Dr. Statia Elliot
TTRA Canada 2019 Conference
Like many destinations, Canada began this year with an increase in international visitors (Destination Canada, 2019). An attributing factor to this growth is the phenomenon of social media and, more specifically, social networking sites (SNS) such as Facebook, which emphasize a user’s relationships, as supported by their conversations, identity, reputation, and presence (Kietzmann, Hermkens, McCarthy, & Silvestre, 2011; Kim & Fesenmaier, 2017). SNS are now deeply ingrained in our social and economic lives (Usui, Wei, & Funck, 2018; Zeng & Gerritsen, 2014), even surpassing traditional marketing channels in terms of importance and effectiveness (Burgess, Sellitto, Cox, & Buultjens, 2009; O’Connor, …

Special events such as fundraising activities are types of events that individuals typically attend to participate in the festivities and enjoy with friends, family and colleagues (Smith, Sargent, Causin & Olle, 2019; Causin & McCarthy, 2017; Causin et. al, 2010). According to Smith, et. al (2019), fundraising in higher education has been around for hundreds of years. In the early 1900’s, the driving motivator for fundraising was to provide funds for students specifically for scholarships, housing expenses, books and food. Fundraising is the process of seeking and gathering voluntary financial contributions by engaging individuals, businesses, charitable foundations, or governmental agencies …

Hotel Sector Forecast Accuracy In El Paso: 2006-2016, Thomas M. Fullerton Jr., Adam G. Walke
Border Region Modeling Project
This study evaluates the accuracy of previously published econometric forecasts for seven lodging sector variables that measure hotel activity in El Paso, Texas. The hotel forecasts have been generated annually using an econometric model of the El Paso metropolitan economy from 2006 forward. Predictive accuracy is evaluated relative to random walk benchmarks. Assessment is completed using both descriptive forecast error summary statistics as well as formal statistical tests. The econometric model outperforms the random walk benchmarks for a majority of the variables analyzed. However, statistical tests of forecast error differentials do not yield conclusive evidence in favor of the econometric …

Profiling The Emotional Peaks And Valleys In Stories Of Cross-Border Shopping, Michael S. Mulvey, Charles E. Gengler
TTRA Canada 2019 Conference
The stories that travellers tell provide valuable insight to tourism managers responsible for shaping travel experiences. Access to consumer stories has never been greater due to the rise of online forums, reviews, and blogs (Gretzel, Fesenmaier, Lee, & Tussyadiah, 2010). Yet, researchers’ ability to make sense of these stories is limited by current theoretical and methodological approaches. We contend that there is an opportunity to develop new approaches to measure customer experience using advanced text analysis and sentiment indices. Specifically, we use narrative theory to explain the importance of emotional peaks and valleys in stories and propose a natural language …

#Fomo: How The Fear Of Missing Out Drives Consumer Purchase Decisions, Michelle Van Solt
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This research focuses on consumers’ experiential purchase decisions motivated by the fear of missing out (FOMO). I propose that consumers are more likely to attend an event when individuals with whom they have strong (weak) interpersonal ties will be present, because consumers will experience higher (lower) levels of FOMO. The results of one qualitative and four quantitative studies, including a behavioral study, demonstrate that purchase intent is higher when participants imagine that their close friends (i.e., strong ties) will attend, an effect mediated by FOMO and anticipated regret. Furthermore, the type of experience (i.e., ordinary, extraordinary) moderates the relationship of …

The Yosakoi Festival And Rural Revitalization In Kōchi Prefecture, Japan, Amy L. Kostka
Senior Honors Projects
Japan has been experiencing a population decline in rural areas since post World War II. Rural prefectures including Kōchi have been participating in nationwide efforts as well as local efforts to maintain population and hopefully attract more people to these areas. These efforts have been collectively categorized under the term rural revitalization. Rural revitalization has many aims: to encourage pride in local cultural practices, to attract tourists and new residents, and to boost local economies. In this study I examined how a festival might assist in rural revitalization efforts. Exploring the literature involving revitalization efforts provided the scaffolding for my …

Making Ethnic Tourism Good For The Poor, Jean Junying Lor, Shelly Kwa, John A. Donaldson
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
How can ethnic tourism alleviate rural poverty? Due to the difficulty of simultaneously expanding tourism while promoting pro-poor tourism, most villages traverse one of two developmental pathways: 1) ensuring an inclusive structure before expanding, or 2) expanding before building an inclusive structure. This study compares four comparable cases in Southwestern China to understand the politics behind the decision to choose different pathways, and the impact each pathways has on local residents. While the first pathway requires a careful balance to maintain a pro-poor structure as tourism volume expands, the second pathway presents apparently insurmountable barriers to poverty reduction due to …
